The Bloated Float quest- How is it possible?

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 7:23 pm

I just realized... there's no way, in-game, for the Bloated Float to head out to sea!

"Can't it just sail south, down Niben Bay and to the sea?"

Nope. Leyawin is in the way

"How about to Anvil?"

Most of that route is landlocked, and there's no way for the ship to get to Anvil. So how the heck the ships in the waterfront head out to sea? Is there a group of strong-armed men near Leyawin who literally pick up the ships and carry them the few hundred feet to the sea?

I thought that they just went out to the Niben (despite the lack of visible lane) because they were heading out to Bravil.

Still, even that would be impossible. There's some shallows which would prevent a boat like that entering/leaving Lake Rumare.

In Lore, Leyawiin can be passed through. It has a bridge that connects it. Ingame, they didn't implement this.

Aye, I see this as an almost unavoidable consequence of Cyrodiil being compressed as much as it is. Something's gotta give. Better water than landmass. Had Bethesda been willing and able to reproduce Oblivion on the same scale as Daggerfall the Niben could be as wide and deep as it needs to be to support seagoing traffic. I give them a good bit of slack in this particular case, though I do wish they'd tried a bit harder create at least a token illusion that a ship could sail from the Harbor District to the mouth of the river.

Yea in the concept art you can see where the ships would pass under large arches in huge stone bridges. Besides a simple cook (favorite easter egg in OB) shouldn't worry about the navigation.

Open Cities Reborn mod did a fairly accurate rendition of the concept art. Worth checking out if you play on the PC.

Yes, I pretend that the Niben is fully navigable, to include as it passes Leyawiin and enters the Topal Bay. EZ.

In lore it is fully navigable. Just a shame that Bethesda cut such an option out of the game so that we have to pretend this is the case.
Certain Mods for the PC version fix this to make it realistically possible for boats to pass by or through Leyawin.

Sure it's navigable near Leyawiin. If it were not, Argonians would instantly be put to work dredging it out. :twirl:

I agree though that it would be nice if the unmodded game depicted it as so.

Good catch. Of course this has been noted and discussed many times before.

Not only can't you get from the Niben to the Sea, but you cannot even get from the Waterfront to the Niben (because it is far too shallow in some places).

I think the best conclusion is that mages teleport the ships over the barriers. Or put another way: "a Wizard did it".

I love that concept of Leyawiin. Too bad it didn't make it to release.

Yeah it's such a shame that loads of awesome content, that was originally planned for the game didn't make it into it. Thank god for mods, is what I say. :)

I loved that "I'm just the cook." line. I must have seen Under Siege a dozen times at the dollar show when it was in theaters. Definitely Segal's best movie.

I don't know how many times I've done that quest and I didn't realize it was a line from a movie ( I've never seen a Steven Segal movie, obviously).

I agree. This is a very good reason why all of the Mages at the Arcane University are always too busy to speak with you.

Ahh, so that's why Arch-Mage traven banned Necromancy! To put the focus off of his illegal levitation business! :lmao:

If you're going to that amount of effort, teleport the goods to their destination instead. My theory is that's exactly what everyone does these days, and ships have just become floating warehouses and teleport nodes. That's why you never see anyone carrying anything on and off the ships either.

With nobody dredging the channel any more, the river silts up.

Some of that "silt" -- like in the narrows near Fatback Cave -- is the size of houses. :)

I don't know if it's silt or just the way the Lake is (Lake Rumare that is).

From the waterfront, if you go one way you run into a part of the lake near Fatback that you can just wade across.

And if you go the other way you run into the same very shallow water by Sideways Cave.

Those caves are really mini-volcanoes. Occasionally the little wooden doors pop open, and boulders are ejected from the tunnels, and land in the lake.

The whole thing is part of a grand Argonian plot to disrupt shipping and bring the Empire to its knees.

I seen that a bunch of times as well when it first come out. I saw it in the quest and just cracked up. One of my favorite movies growing up.

Ha! It's weird to see the PC users finally "pretending" something. No mod for this one, huh? ;)
