The slow down perk when the enemy does a power attack is pretty essential imo.

I was having a lot of trouble with survival as a 2h warrior and heavy armor before i put a few points in the first tier of block. It has helped a lot. The other thing that was getting me was i would give up on blocking an attack too soon, you can parry a strike even if its about the land. Theres also an enchantment you can learn to increase the damage your block absorbs, might be useful to throw on a piece of armor if you plan on leveling enchanting at all.

If I put perks in block, does it carry over to when I block with a 2H weapon?

It's amazing. My strategy revolves around it. You can hit them with your shield, which causes them to stagger and opens them up for attack. It takes stamina, so I have A LOT of stamina. There are perks in the skill tree to reduce the stamina needed as well.

Yes there is. Reduces the stamina needed to do a block smash.

With an elven shield, block of about 51 and all available perks, around level 18 blocking was the difference between getting one shotted and only loosing about 20hp from a giant.

EDIT: to be more precise I had like 180HP and could block at least 12-15 blows so it was more like 10ish hp. Stamina was more of a problem than HP if I kept blocking, and I could stagar the giant on demand with my shield slam. Damage on slam was terrible, I don't think the 5x damage perk would help much...

I'm curious what shield charge is like, for example. Have you seen a video where it's in use?

I would like to know this too. I would also like to know the benefit of the slow time perk. What is the point? You're still going to get hit...it just takes longer. What are you expected to do in the period of time slowing down?

To answer the original posters question: Yes! Block is very useful. Bashing is a godsend, and allows me to almost stunlock some opponents that would be otherwise very difficult.

Want to know that as well.
Blocking with 2h improves the skill, but all the perks mention shields in descriptions (like, "block 20% more damage with your shield" etc) - do they work with 2h blocking?

I think this perk sounds really awesome on paper. Imaging charging into a dragon and it staggers from your shield tackle.

Does armor reduce magic damage? If no, then block seems like a core skill for warriors because there is a perk that reduces magic damage.

Blocking is a vital part of my build. I'm a Mage so I would have died a lot more often if I didn't focus on it; from what I'm seeing in this thread I should have gotten the quick reflexes perk over the arrow deflection one when I last leveled.

Yes it does. Just not the shield specific perks.

Power bash and disarming bash work with the 'bow bash' too.

i have questions...

A) when i block i often get staggered for a lot of attacks or do take damage altough im blocking, is that cause my blocking skill is very low and im using a hide shield?

B) does the armor type of the shield matter for the A) the persk of the armor trees and B) towards skill increase or does blocking only increase blocking?

I always have my shield equipped, and use either destruction, or a weapon when I feel its necessary, plus my character is a necromancer so whenever theres a dead body around(or I make one) I always take the time to Resurrect one.

It's great, it's probably my second highest and most used skill.

Shield bash - smash smash - shield bash - smash smash works GREAT, especially against casters!

And don't even get me started on Elemental Protection! <333333
