The body, she is elastic

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 6:15 am

New one I've seen: female unclothed bodies seem to have a section that stretches out anywhere from 10-15 behind or off to one side. (This happens in first person, or third person.) All races are affected. Once clothed, the effect goes away, which is suspicious. I'm using Coronerras Maximum Compatibility Skeletons, but I can't think it's that. Also, I haven't noticed this before, and I've had Coronerras' in for a year or so. Any ideas?

I always install Corroneras Last, the issue is caused by the skeleton being overwritten by another mod. The moving body parts do not like the change from Corroneras.

I've tried reinstalling Corroneras, which is only meshes, hoping that would update it, but it hasn't changed anything. Even updated the time/date stamps to reflect today's date.

I have a BAIN archive that is Corroneras Skeleton combined with the Feet, hands, upper and lower body meshes for the BBB body. EDIT I made this archive to fix this issue when I switched from OBMM to a BAIN install, and I wish I had remembered this when I first posted. :banghead:

I'm not using a BAIN archive, but all the NIF files for Corroneras are up to date, and until a month or so ago (last time I played), it worked fine with HGEC. Wonder if I should do a BAIN install. Haven't tried one before, but I can't see how it would solve this.

Are you using any animation replacers?

Surazal's Sensual Walks, Xtudo's Personality Idles Modified. I've had the former in my lineup for at least a year, the latter for at least 6 months. This is a new problem.

I wonder if Vipcxj's skeleton (the one included in his "Real High Heels System") would have the same problem. Some players who are more Oblivi-fashion-conscious than I have told me that it has superseded Coronerra's. I have not tried the mod myself, not being a fan of high heels in real life, to say nothing of trotting around Cyrodiil in them, so I cannot verify that.

Unless you want moving body parts, just reinstall HGEC and let it overwrite the body meshes.

I'll try that. I don't need the moving body parts, but have Corroneras installed for compatibility with some attractive armors that seem to require it. Haven't used any of those yet, however so...will post back.

Yes, that solved it. Thanks. :) Wish I was wiser about what causes this.

I've had a similar (I think) issue where part of the clothing stretches off into the distance. Like, it's as if they're tethered to some point far away, and the stretched texture will just clip right through anything between the NPC and wherever the point of origin is. I've noticed it on two different NPCs, one in Weynon Priory and one in Bruma, but it's so rare I haven't bothered to do anything about it.

They were nvde, correct? Because it should only affect clothed NPCs if you're running a mod that gives them some of the newer skeleton-based armors.

They were clothed, and both male and female. I added the "(I think)" because I don't know how related it might be to your problem. But if you're right it's probably due to one of the NPC clothing mods I'm using, I think I first saw it shortly after I installed NPC New Clothes and Cyrodiil NPC Remodeling Project mods (I really like having all the NPCs in Cyrodiil wearing unique outfits, heh).

My BAIN archive consists of Meshes\Characters\_1stperson\skeleton.nif and Meshes\Characters\_male\femalehand.nif, femaleupperbody.nif, skeleton.nif, and skeletonbeast.nif. I think I could get away with removing the femalehand.nif and the femaleupperbody.nif, but I need to test this in game to be sure.
EDIT Removed the non-skeleton nifs and the moving body parts and clothing still work.
I always install this dead last in my Install Order.

If it started after loading those mods, then removing them would at least be a good way to see if they're the source of the problem. The fact that it only happens to one or two NPCs for you suggests it might be one of the mods whose work was drawn on for the Project, but there's no way to know without trying.

On the other hand, it's only two NPCs. ;)

Exactly, which is why I haven't much cared about it, and am only mentioning it just to make it known and not as any kind of request for help. Now if I began seeing it more frequently, I might be moved to act, but for now I can accept that dude who lives in Weynon Priory has a robe that is tethered somewhere around the Imperial City, hehe. Actually I don't know if it goes that far but it definitely clips through the land in that direction when he's walking around outside.

Look at it this way: if he's attacked, he only needs to turn around and he'll whack off the heads of every warrior within ten feet with that extended clothing edge. :D

I've had a couple of instances in the last month where the stretchy band connects two NPCs. Am I right in assuming that all these variations are related to skeleton issues? And if so, is there an easy fix?

Hmmm I know as far as mesh stretching is concerned improper weight assignments to the wrong bones/areas of a mesh can cause this.
Ex. If yo uwere painting the weight on a cuirass to simulate it well... Weighing somthing, but you assigned it to a leg bone it would go haywire.
The same is even more true if you weight paint a limb in blender and assign it to a bone and accidentially spill some of the weight paint over onto another limb.
Not sure if this will help anyone, but I figured Ie'd throw in what I know in the off chance it does.

Vertices shooting off into infinity is "always" (as in "maybe there are other cases but I've yet still to stumble across any") caused by missing the proper bones they were rigged to in the skeletons.
That last picture for example clearly shows a robe with some lower hind parts rigged to the tail bones, and a usual skeleton.nif doesn't have tail bones, that's why those robes most likely came with their own skeleton replacement, which in turn was replaced by the next mod with its own custom skeleton.nif that was installed.

It's a pity there can be only 1 custom default skeleton, the one that was installed last, and there are so many mods requiring their own to work right. It's a really tricky business, unless you manually "merge" all skeletons from all mods of this kind you're using yourself, which of course is not an easy task.

And there's a very visible difference between rogue weighting and missing bones in the skeleton. Only the latter can shoot into "infinity". The first will always stay close to the mesh, as it keeps its relative distance to whatever "wrong" bone it was rigged to.

Thanks for describing it in detail. The two NPCs I've encountered definitely have it shooting off into infinity. Well, there's also the case of the MMM skeletons http://i54.tinypic.com/bis477.jpg with the crumbling skeleton nifs I installed, but I totally expected that (and want to try to unpack the MMM bsa and fix it at some point if it's not too difficult).

Interesting that you have the CompatSkeleton and still get stretchies. Make sure none of your mods override the NPC "Bendo Olo". and if so, replace the skeleton in that mod with the compat skeleton..? This is what I had to do for Compatibility between MAO and any BBB mod that equips an NPC with the BBB version of armor/clothing/body. Be mindful that the skeletonbeast.nif and the first person skeletons should be replaced, as well.
