The Book of Circles

Post » Tue Jul 13, 2010 11:57 am

Hello all. I am looking for more information about Frandar Hunding's Book of Circles. I know that the book supposedly sits on the hearth of every house in Hammerfell, but has anyone ever seen it? Does anyone know what is written in it? Any help at all is appreciated, thanks.

Cheers Lycanthropic.

Always happy to help. Plus, Redguard lore is bad-assed. So there.

im going to give my customary "that lore is outdated" warning and stuff. that was all daggerfall, the redguards were not really redguards until redguard (hehe). its pretty easy to discern what fits and what doest.

It would be a shame if the part about the giant goblins from another dimension weren't true, because that part is bad [censored].

Giant goblins from another dimension? :read: I'm still a novice when it comes to Redguard lore, so please elaborate.

fixed that for ya :)

that part is probably the worst thing in the whole book. It is boring and a blatant cliche and contradicted by all other lore out there.

Remember that stuff about Boethiah "relieving himself" of Trinimac on the ground, I like to think that that's the same "inter-dimensional portal" that the goblins fell out of...

When you're stewing in some [censored]'s small intestine, reading cosmic secrets from the walls, inbetween screams of agony, it's nice to have some company.

That is. The. Most. Bad-Ass. Book. Ever.

If it was just a tiny bit more badass, my head would explore.

Egads...my words have been confiscated and edited by the Shadowy Forum Cult?!

I'll have you know that Goblins are not boring and therefore right. :toughninja:

That is to say...cliche plotlines about defeating the evil forces of Mordor apparently make for best selling games. Sheeeesh. We all know that.

Saying that you're joking utterly ruins the joke. Shame on you.

I've seen the robes, altar, and secret decoder rings...its no joke...

Why half of Ra'Gada history is considered "boring" never made any sense to me: the Hidarge using geomancy to destroy Yokuda seems anything but...

A horde of goblins swarming out of Boe's brown-star seems anything but, especially led/sent by a "not so fresh" Malacath...

I suppose I'm just one of the few who doesnt attribute the history to the "16th century Japan samurai super-junk", which I'd wager is the consensus of many[?], but not all...

I think seeing the creation of Orcs through the eyes of the Redguards is cool. But see the thing is, the Redguards aren't elves. /bite

the thing with "redguard history and their heroes" is that it contradicts various other, newer, pieces of lore. hell, it even contradicts itself.

The singers packed their lives, folded their tents, mourned their dead, and followed Hunding to the great port city [of] Arch, in the province of Seawind. There Hunding had a flotilla of ships waiting. The Singers left their desert for a new land. No longer welcome in the desert empire, they to be sung about and spoken of in legend. The final great warrior, the singers of Shehai, the Book of Circles, all leaving that land where their virtue was unappreciated. Red, red with blood they were in the eyes of the gentle citizenry, never mind that they had saved them from a great evil.

this is just...wow. first, the names. second, the "red with blood" Redguards. third, the Redguards not appreciating skill in battle. fourth, the Sword Singers being some sort of clan. Fifth, the Redguards being "gentle." sixth, the pervailing idea of the totally good ansei and the totally evil emperor.

what i am trying to say is that these stories clash in lore and in atmosphere with everything that came after. The basic events are true enough, but the details and the feeling does not match.

I'll give you that for sure. Maybe a re-write is in order? Like a "book of circles second edition" that replaces this one to more fit the series as it is now.

I'm pretty sure I detect a hint of facetiousness...

I'm in complete agreeance, like most real world civilizations though oral tales told through the ages tend to be changed, misunderstood or added onto to make them seem far more epic then they actually were, and thereby entertaining to the casual listener...alot of that could be said for Redguard history since most tales weren't put to a scribes paper til long after they were mere shadows of themselves...

TL;DR: needs more Memory-stone...

i have no problem with exaggeration, thats all good and proper. the redguards portrayed in that book are nothing like the redguards of today; they don't share the same values, have the same basic language, etc. if i had to take that book at an in-universe face value position, i'd say it was written by an imperial living someplace in leyawiin who has never seen any redguards.

Well, let's say it was written by an ancestor of/inspiration to Alessia Ottus and be done with it until a full numbered TES set in Hammerfell, then.

Why be done with it? Redguard discussions are of the minuscule percentile around here...despite the potential for truely in-depth conjectures, heresay, and whathaveyounots, and unaided by in-true sources...namely Redguards get swept under the carpet cause John Q Consumer seen the "Murder was the Case" video on MTV...

Just saying... :jammasterjay:

I mean for the moment. I also agree that Redguards, and non-Imperial humans in general, don't have enough discussion going on right now. However, that's simply because the two games since TES came into it's own were Morrowind, an elven province, and Cyrodiil, the Imperial Province. All good things to those who wait.
