The 'Boone is Overrated' Thread

Post » Sat Jan 09, 2010 7:46 am

I don't use Boone because I like not being set upon by legion whenever i try to go anywhere near the fort. And rex svckS. He blantantly refuses to attack ANYTHING, EVER. He just runs around in circles until the fight is over. The only reason I use him at all is because ED-E spawned as a hostile in Primm once i upgraded him. Stupid bugs :banghead:

I will agree, Boone, his beret, are soooo overpowered.

Of all the characters I find him the least compelling.

So your wife got kidnapped and enslaved? Big whoop, get her back and stop giving everyone the silent treatment. I thought you were a solider.

But thanks for the help with those death claws :)

Yeah, not quite possible.

If you listen to the whole story about his wife, you'll better understand why Boone is the way he is. It's a very poignant story.

boone is is great for getting ur killing done...

rex, WTF!?!?!? for a while i was passing by fire geckos, and rex would just run away....if i wanted to kill a gecko that was focused on rex id have to chase them, or wait for rex to come back... rex was good before this.... now he runs off on his own to kill death claws..n gets knocked out. dunno if its certain creatures that do this or what...or glitching. i dunno.

Can I ask what what number is your Charisma? Companion Nerve is set by our Charisma and I'm debating about using Rex in my next game. Thanks. :)

Alone I have no problems. The companions are just fun to take along.

Yup....that's it for me too. I can solo the game just fine...but after that, I just find the game more entertaining with them along...watching them whup ass all over the place. Make me smile.
I stuck with Boone for most of my game. In fact, I've only started taking other companions along now that I'm level 30 (for some time now), have explored the entire Wasteland, and have completed much of the game quests. Really, I want to finish their side quests, and I want to see what kind of perks I get from each one in combat. That way, I can make a better decision when it comes to taking down Caesar and his minions.

I know this is an older reply, but I wanted to mention that if you've already done many/most of the quests in the game before you hire any companions, chances are high that you'll miss being able to do/see all their quests because of the way they're designed.

^^^Too true. For my second playthrough I tried to split my time evenly (well, for the most part) between all the companions and I still managed to screw up my chance of unlocking Raul's quest. Damn you Ranger Andy!

As for Rex, even with a Charisma of 8 and Lupa's brain, the silly dog died quickly during the game's last battle. It became so frustrating that I ended up turning off hardcoe mode when crossing the dam just so that I could avoid the constant reloading of saves!

Raul is definitely the worst quest wise. He has a nice perk and is as good with a gun as Boone, but not many are going to dash to Black Mt. first, at least on the first run or two. They should not have made Ranger Andy accessible that early if such a quest depended on him.
I guess tho that at least it gives players something to do on replays, using different strategies in order to do things/try other companions, once they know about 'em. :)

My character has almost no skills fighting (nothing above 30) and is a smooth talker who can't manipulate people to get his way without getting into fights himself (often convinces others to). As a result, he needs bodyguards when going around the wasteland who can help enforce his fearsome presence and I think Boone fits that position adequately (ED-E is an additional bodyguard though he barely helps at all)
