The 'Boone is Overrated' Thread

That's Jason Marsden, not James, and I love his tortured Boone voice work. More Boone in a DLC would be fine by me.

No, its http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005188/ - as in X-Men Cyclops actor. I think he's channeling Clint Eastwood in this voice role.

I was thinking more Kurt russel as snake pliskin, but anyway, my first play through was with Veronica, hearing "I hope it's a new dress" for the umpteenth time got pretty annoyinging, on my second play through and so far I prefer Boone, but it has nothing to do with his stats, it's because he is quiet and his personal dialogue is the deepest so far, wandering the wasteland with him as a companion is a pleasure.

I only hate Boone because I can't kill the NCR silently to take their armor and weapons from them.
I have to be a goody two shoes around every NCR area I run into. Luckily, Lilly doesn't think the same way.

I like Boone, and i think he's useful. My favorite lines in the game so far (as far as with companions), was my conversation with him before attacking Nelson. I would go with lily if it wasn't for her annoying lines. I swear to god, when i enter sneak mode, she says "Don't you worry about me sweetie, your grandma knows how to stay quiet" EVERY 15 SECONDS. Not just when i enter sneak mode like Raul (which is still pretty annoying hearing remarking about creaky knees and dirt every time i crouch), but like constantly reminding that she can stay quiet, even though it seems shes so [censored] heavy footed.

I like Boone; he's a great sniper and his quest is fun. The voice actor did great work, too.

But he's too 'dry' for me; I like a bit of humour when travelling the Mojave. That's where Arcade comes in -- the best companion, in my opinion, especially with his Gannon Tesla Armour.

Dunno why that many people dislike Rex and calls him weak. He might be before you finish his quest idk. I usually finish that asap once picking him up.
But he's not weak at all. So far i'd rate him the strongest clost combat companion in the game. In my games, he's taking down Nightkin and Deathclaws on his own - very hard + hardcoe mind you. His knockdown is simply too good. At the same time i find ED-E's attacks really weak even after upgraded.

For human companions i've toyed around with Boone aswell, but he gets abit boring. Raul is my prefered companion so far. He's incredibly strong with guns (even miniguns) + Danny Trejo = superpwnageofd00m0mgmegaawsumsauce w. cherry on top. And, his perk is good. It's not great (none of the companion perks are imo) but usefull.

I haven't tried that doctor guy yet, he simply appears to be too elistist for my liking. Veronica us nice, but atleast for me she doesn't level up with you, so she's always at very low health levels and get's killed if there's more than 1 opponent attacking her.
Lily is just not me. I found her too comical and phucked up. I killed Tabitha on sight because i found her misplaced in this game and i got the same feeling when i saw Lily.

Boone is good, but he rips through bullets so fast when you give him the sniper rifle. It's like, dude, I can take out every Legion guy I see in one or two shots, why does it take you six per?

Also, as a stealth sniper, having Boone around is kind of redundant. There's a lot of inescapable close-quarter fighting in the game, which makes Veronica a much better companion for me overall. If I ran melee, I would probably choose Boone.

I do not wish to sound offensive but I have made several comments on why Boone is not OP and what the consequences of saying Boone is OP are, without solid proof. He is basically a very-well put together companion. Please read http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1129556-boone/page__p__16560093__fromsearch__1&#entry16560093:

This is a breakdown of a companion anolysis because I think too many people are complaining of companion OP without understanding the mechanics behind it, Boone notably leading to the programmers nerfing the wrong thing. First of all:

Companion nerve boosts the level of your companions Armor and Damage, it is set by your S.P.E.C.I.A.L Charisma as such:

Charisma:

1: A/D +5%
2: A/D + 10%
3: A/D + 15%
4: A/D + 20%
5: A/D + 25%
6: A/D + 30%
7: A/D + 35%
8: A/D + 40%
9: A/D + 45%
10: A/D + 50%

Now I am only going to use Boone here because he is notably the most affected, and most players experience him as their first companion. His stats can be found in wiki under "Craig Boone".
I've made an accurate reasoning that he is in fact not OP:

Let's say the average player has a Charisma of 5 therefore his/her nerve is 5 also meaning +25% Damage/Armor to companions.
Taking this http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Craig_Boone which you may criticize, Boone has a Gun rating of 54.
His scoped rifle has a Dam rating of 45.

25% of 45 = +11.25 DAM(per shot)
Therefore in total his Dam, per shot, will be 56.25 Dam per shot.
Combined with a sneak of 54 and using a rifle he will most likely Hidden Critical his first shot every time.
He wears a 1st Recon Beret, granting +1 PER; +5 Crit which will be frequent given his Shot ratio of 0.78 per second.

Nerve 10.
50% of 45 = +22.50 DAM(per shot)
Therefore in total his Dam, per shot, will be 67.5 Dam per shot.

Think about that, there is barely anything in the game that has a DT or resistance level remotely near that unless your in the highly dangerous areas. That is why he is killing entire legions and platoons, they have a measley DT of at most, 7-10. So that leaves 46Damage ( Nerve 5) or 57 Damage ( Nerve 10) unchecked. Still think Boone is OP?
The reason I am adamant in pointing this out is that if too many people complain about Boone without understanding the mechanics behind him or any of the companions. Everyone says he is too OP because he is the first one you meet/obtain and frankly the most powerful as pointed out. Slowly am I seeing more complaints of companion OP. I do not wish to see him nerfed blindly because of misinterpreted complaints.

If you were to complain you'd have to look at all the other companions, I will do this if the community wishes to see the data on them too but at a later time. If I were to point out what is OP, I'd say the combination of the above not the individual statistics.

Reno

If Boone, and all companions get nerfed because of this - and there is no grey area he will be in your words OP or under-Powered - I will be saddened. If he is OP, it is because of the combination of all his assets: Gun SP/Weapon/Apparel/Charisma Nerve and not Boone is simple OP.

I only have Raul and am vilified by the NCR, so there's no way I'm getting Boone.

There's just something hilarious about me and a Mexican ghoul trampling across the Mojave desert.

Guess they added James to the game's credits incorrectly then too. Yeah, I actually sat through them until it got to the voice actors section - James Marsden is Craig Boone in the game credits.

Boone has scared the bleep out of me several times now.

We (Booner, ED-E and moi) were walking across the wastes when suddenly a few red markers appear on my radar.
I go into alert mode and pull out my gun and start scanning the perimeter.
Concentrated i push on in the direction of the red markers
When suddenly: BAM!!!!!!!!!

A body goes down, and his/her head follows.
I think damn, Who killed me?????!!!!!!

But no, The booner killed a baddie for me, I didn't even see where the baddie was.

I mean that's awesome right?

Happened to me (and still happens) a couple of tiimes. :disguise:

If you think about it, Boone is really the only character with no completely practical perks. Anyone who isnt blind and cant make out a building from a mouse can see an enemy with out boones spotting perk. If you have high damage but low repaire get Johse or whatever, week in melee get the BoS girl... good overall get boone. I think its how they wanted the characters.

Who knew the internets could be full of misinformation? :D I'm so confused. What I don't understand is the lack of mention James was getting on all the voice acting announcements. He's a pretty famous guy and he's not mentioned in the blog announcements or anywhere. I've really been searching. Because of that, I'm still wondering if there aren't typos galore all over the place and which actor it actually is. I swear the voice sounds more like Jason because I heard it on his website but I could definitely be wrong, the voice is very low-key, and if so, thank you for the correction. :)

Having spent some time with Cass, despite her rough around the edges behaviour I start seriously liking the chick. I gave her a Hunting Shotgun and craploads of 12ga and watched her murder a Scorpion Queen all by herself.

She seems very resilitient in combat, something that horribly pisses me off about Veronica (whom I like otherwise) and Rex who just drop first thing in the fight. She has good damage output and she typically crouches and moves back from enemy spamming shells at him. She doesn't have Boone's .308 AP firepower, but still she's extremely reliable.

Here's James just speaking normally and I can definitely hear Boone in that, just a little quieter and "whisper-y-er" as Boone. But yeah, that is odd have quiet they've been about his contribution.

I found Boone to be the most interesting of the companions. Simply because over time he starts to respect you and once you get his 'companion' quest he becomes even more of an awesome character.
Plus, I like to be stealthy and snipe people from as far away as possible. So, he fit my play style perfectly. And you can't beat how bad ass we both look in full desert ranger armor with anti-material rifles.

Also, I always wanted an Eye-Bot in Fallout 3 so Ed-E was a dream come true.

Veronica is far and away the best companion, in my opinion.

First off, she'll do 118 (118!!!) DPS with a Ballistic Fist; that alone is pretty crazy. Also, if you get the mod to fix her leveling issues so she gains HP properly, get her the Bonds of Steel perk so her DT goes up, and give T-51b, she is a freakin' tank.

She's also hilarious and a genuinely interesting character.

Thanks for that link. I closed my eyes and listened and I think I heard Boone in there too. I really don't understand why James Marsden hasn't gotten more attention for this part in FNV. He was important to X-Men as Cyclops and he had a big part in Hairspray (which completely showed his range) and now I'm wondering about the Fallout credits for the other actor on the Wikia and if it was always James in the earlier Fallouts. The Wikia needs to fix their page on Craig Boone. Thanks again, I'll go back and fix my other posts so I'M not spreading misinformation. :)

Boone, ED-E and I went to Vault 11 tonight and I think he levelled me up again. I wish he'd get credit for his own shooting. :D

Happens to me all the time too. I like it. Enemies sneaking up on me from behind where my pipboy doesn't spot em. But good ol Boone takes em right out for me. Nice.

It's true his perk isn't that useful but I really like it for some reason all the same. Boone is most useful when I attract the attention of deathclaws, like at the Quarry. I run screaming away like a little girl and Boone stays behind and slows them down just long enough for me to get away.

There are two things I dont like about Boone. He will pick off enemies that I havent seen yet and unless I can discern where the body is by looking at the surroundings in the slow mo death sequence I cant find them to loot. I was having a terrible time collecting the Irradiated NCR tags in searchlight because i would walk into town and immediatley get 5 slow mo death sequences from enemies Boone killed that I did not even see. So then im running around in the murk looking for ghoul bodies that blend in with everything.

This of course wouldnt be as much of a problem if he followed your commands to be passive. This is extremely annoying on hardcoe in enclosed dungeons because he just takes off on a killing spree and you cant even locate him. You just see him take off through the halls gun blazing and as you are trying to locate him "Boone has died". I had to leave him outside vault 34 because everytime I zoned in he would just take off running and die within a few seconds.

Boone+Reinforced Armour= Early thirties non mutant sniper Boone!

Honestly sometimes it feels like it's Fallout:Boone...I feel like some kind of Robin I even have to ask him questions all the time to even get any answers out of him.

Maybe after his quest I'll cut him with my Ultra Luxe Cane throwing him into a marina to teach him who is in charge......

"As we walked along the flatblock irradiated marina, I was calm on the outside, but thinking all the time - Now it was to be Boone the general, saying what we should do and what not to do, and ED-E as his mindless greeding eyebot. But suddenly, I viddied that thinking was for the gloopy ones, and that the oomny ones use like, inspiration and what Atom sends. Now it was lovely music that came into my aid. There was a window open with the stereo on, and I viddied right at once what to do."
