The Box

Post » Mon Feb 02, 2009 1:52 am

Got this idea from an old Twilight Zone episode. So in game you would be given a choice from a Mysterious traveler with a box. In the box is a button if you press it you get 1,000,000 Caps but someone in game will die, it could be anyone even someone needed to complete the main quest so it could be world/game altering. What do you think.

I saw that Ep. Interesting idea. I couldn't press the button though. I know there are many who would but unless I had a guarantee that it would be Caesar or the Legate, I couldn't do it. :D

Unless I had assurance it isn't Mr. House, I'd not push it. *Crosses fingers and hopes it's Veronica that dies*

There was a movie made with that plot made in the last couple of years was there not?

Would be a hard thing to put into the game. Id just kill the guy and take his 1,000,000 caps. Also that much would really unbalance the game.

Still I would push it.

I think I'd invite Raul to shoot him in the face then dump his button in that radioactive pool outside Motel Hell after looting the corpse. There are too many people out there who need killin' for me to waste my time playing someone else's perverse games.

Most of the characters I play wouldn't have any troubles pushing the button. If you don't really know anybody, what do you care that some random schmuck will die? People die every day in the wasteland, lots of them, in a variety of stupid and pointless ways. Boone? Arcade? Who the hell are they and why should I care (their existence is player knowledge, not character knowledge).

(I still wouldn't use the box; not because my characters have any moral problem with doing so, but because having a million caps in cash right off the bat would make the game really really boring)

My mother always did tell me not to trust strangers so I wouldn't press it.

Even if she didn't say that, I probably wouldn't push it; Possible guilt trip may ensue. Plus, pressing the button may end up killing me, which in game terms, means erasing all of the saves associated with that character.

I think it's a good idea, sadly I think it is a little too easy to pick the money with stakes like that. I would lower it to a thousand caps, and you only have the opportunity once. At the beginning of the game when you most need it. I think that would make the decision harder.

In game, it depends on role, level, prize...
Also depending on If the offer was made by..
1. a 6.5 flame haired Irish goddess, or,
2. a guy that looks like me, ( option two please :hubbahubba: ).
3. Someone with the name Ed Liv, Ezel E bub, or Stan A, heck even Dr Acula.

Honest answer as a RPG'er an instant push, then I'll run around to find the NPC.
Just to see if it was one I disliked, and did the right / wrong / neutral thing no reload.

There's not much to stop it being a reload bashing thing, some won't, others will use it as an exploit however.
All you'd need to do is see if any "quest failed" pop ups, errmmm popped up.

Off topic
IRL yes, just to push the shinyawsomenesstastic red button ( it is red?, please say paliNOde. )
Then I'd ask for another box with a green button to press this time, no yellow, no pink, blue, no blyelinkrennue.
Be afraid people the "Mailman cometh", "Has knocked twice". and a cubed parcel with a pretty ( in pink ) ribbon around a button like buldge has been left in my care  .

When you have quick save/load, random things don't matter much.

Maybe it could be Mr burke from fallout 3 he follows you from towns to town (like victor), he wont ask you until you make it to the strip.
The prize could be a glitchless, bugless game and 10k caps but kills anyone.(I hope that it kills benny)

Box will be black with a red button and plays music, you can disarm it with 100 explosives(NPC will find you and try to kill you), 7 intelligence to make it so you dont die from the box.

You can 100 barter with NPC to give you 25k caps if you pressed the button.

The box will be in a bunker and the NPC(In the strip) will only tell you the location if you agree to press it, you can decide to disarm it when you get to the bunker.

If NPC dies then he is only carrying 1000 caps, a suit, a hat and a unique gun.

Auto saves after you press button, cant save when you enter the bunker so you save it outside the bunker.

I'll hold him while you break his ribs. :toughninja:

I'd press it. I'd be sad if Veronica or the King died. But I would have lots of money so I would hire some thugs to set fire to the ghouls strippers while I throw Dinky toys at them.

Nah, change it to 2000 caps instead.
I mean, out of aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall the characters that can die the chance of someone you like dying is pretty slim.
So 2000 caps for each time and someone dies.
That way you can gamble with the game more.
A message should pop up as to who died though.

This could be a pretty fun mod!

Wouldn't push it myself, as my last character ended up with 200000odd caps.

It'll be a great mod if set to a ime limit.
One random NPC dies at a specific time, you have no clues which.
However once you open the box two random cryptic clues are posted, one for the man who's going to die.
The other for another random NPC that wishes him dead, but you don't know which is which.
You get a chance to save the guy by getting the money back to the contractor, if you turn up to the target instead he gets killed early and you forfit the money.

Make the death really gory or tragic aswell to make people feel bad about the NPC they killed. Like you dont see Veronica just a big blood stain on the wall and you saw a drawing which was WHY? on the wall which she wrote just before she died

The point is that it's totally clinical and non violent as if the person just "disappears". Hopefully it would be someone that is easy to remember: Imagine taking Boone to this button to turn around and find yourself alone and rich.

If anyone wants to really emulate this you could use the Bison Steve Glitch and randomly kill someone important although this isn't the same.

That's why crafty game developers make it based on a seed, and the seed doesn't change. In effect, the random outcome was already determined at the start of the game and the only way to get a different result would be to start over with a new seed.

Will it be followed by explosions? Like, if you press it, a town actually gets destroyed by a huge nuke. Then in the distance you see a man with a tuxedo and a mustache (that's how I imagine the box guy) tip-toeing away and cackling. And the guy's name would be something like Mr. Stylish Liar.

It's a movie also called The Box and I wouldn't, I don't need that money in the game and in real life I wouldn't, not because I don't need it or because id feel guilty but because things tend to come back to bite you and I fully believe in karma.
