There is no rush to get into using magicka right off. Slap on that heavy armor, pick up a blade/blunt weapon and bash some skulls in for awhile. Think of it as Boot Camp for your Mage.

That's what I started my current character off with. First ten levels where hell with many near deaths as I opted to do the Fighters Guild quest line first after getting martin safe. After I got my sigil stone enchanted street clothes for 75DR (85DR with a 10% fire Shield necklace) at level 11 everything has been going smooth. Now at level 16 I just now have a good set of spells to use, have the Magicka performance to use them, and a 298HP buffer to stay alive long enough while using them.
Only real drag was mucking around with Arvena Thelas' rats to train block and heavy armor....Then there is clubbing/punching my horse for a few levels. Oh, getting destruction to 50 was a chore, but at least beyond 50 normal use will take care of the rest.
