The brotherhood of Steel in FNV

Paladin Hardin claims if you help him become Elder the lock down will be lifted and The Brotherhood will become strong again in the wastes but when he becomes Elder nothing seems to have changed. How come we weren't allowed to make the Brotherhood a stronger faction? :sadvaultboy:

They are a minor faction, "strong" or not.

Because Hardin's a self righteous power grabber who uses the unassuming courier to boot out the only reasonable member of the bunker, take power for himself and then do nothing with it.

Hardin's an idiot who harps on about the BoS' power and strength, which considering they got it handed to them by the weakest of the factions (versus upgraded securitron army and Legion) is laughable.

Besides, what do you expect them to do? They lack numbers after Helios One, their codex won't let them take more members on from outside and they're in way over their heads against the other factions. Rushing out into the wasteland in a charge for tech (and glory) would be very BoS but also very stupid. Without protection, by alliance with another faction or by the weakening of the other factions grips on the Mojave the BoS are way too weak to survive. They can go back to raiding and terrorising once the NCR stop killing them all.

I think its terrible they're portrayed as scared shut ins. They should have had at least a final epic battle with the NCR. Ive had to reverse pickpocket people on the strip giving them Power Armour so they look like BoS members. Its quite costly. Before anyone points out im a bit obsessed with the BoS, <_< I already know.

Well they're dumb, but not that dumb. Going out in a blaze of glory would be silly if you could survive. The NCR would cream them seven ways sideways if the BoS launched an all out attack. If they were sneaky clever then they could probably take one of the areas during the battle at hoover dam (indeed in one ending they do) but it's not like they could ever hold it. They'd want to take on House too much to refrain, he'd destroy them, same with Yes Man. Legion does what Legion does and shafts them. NCR, while weak, is still more than powerful enough to take down whatever remains of the BoS.
If you want BoS play FO3, they're actually nice there as opposed to the tech grabbing cruds they originally were (and are again) :P

They're so close to California where the head chapter is tho. They could send for reinforcements. Not to mention used the courier to wipe the NCR out. (Which ive done!) The NCR Is the worst faction in my opinion and Hardin is a revolting Elder. The courier should have been able to Obtain the Elder status instead and instead of a Securitron army you get a small but Powerful powersuit wearing Brotherhood Army.

They're all but wiped out in California, where would these "reinforcements" come from exactly? They never had numbers to begin with.

I'm not sure I usually just enter the bunker guns blazing and kill them all.

Wiped out? California is where they're strongest or so I thought. That's where they send out new chapters of the BoS to establish new bases of operations across the wastes. I think just about every chapter so far was sent from California.

I doubt they'll kill them off without us seeing or hearing from it. I'm a huge fan of the original BoS and would like to give them the final blow out of respect.

Even by Fallout 2 the Brotherhood were in decline in California, if you couple that with their creed I don't see how they could have largish numbers to their ranks.

I did think that from the talk of both of the Elders we were at least going to see day patrols in Hidden Valley, which didn't seem to happen.

That's probably just Mr. New Vegas blowing hot air, although that would be a good idea for a mod (to add BoS patrols after they say they're expanding).

I should look into that.

There's a secret division of BoS Paladins that are ninjas in power armor.

" Holding position guarding a tech horde that was found while waiting for a runner to comes back with reinforcements" Hey hey hey, watch your choice of words there people, not all of us are like the brotherhood chapters out west thank you! That being said, from my reports of what i learned of the Mojave chapter, McNamara based his decisions on caution and fear that the NCR was massing a huge army to destroy his Chapter, Hardin on the other hand wanted to fight regardless of the numbers. With the state of things in California, The western chapters cannot send reinforcements, so the Mojave Chapter is on it's own. McNamara is in my humble opinion being wiser about his numbers, wanting his bunker to be in a better state, and knowing the state of the Mojave and the control the NCR has in the Mojave. Hardin, while a good Paladin, is more interested in the older aspects of the Brotherhood, and if he had the numbers, i could see that, but that is not wise in this situation right now, especially in light of the Legion's looming attack on the Dam, acting like a chapter in California would more doom them than help them.

Oh good, the reinforcements are here, if you excuse me.....

-Initiates the Random Dance Virus on Paladins Armor-

Ahem, I think the Brotherhood declining is a good thing. They arent the knights of yore some fans make them out to be, nor are they the good guys Lyons branch is. Most chapters now are reclusive tech warhounds, why? Take a look at their tech, their methods. You don't see them educating the Wasteland en masse. No, they prefer tech that'll slice a man in half. In my opinion, war dogs should be put down, and the Brotherhood back West is no different.

The BoS are doing what they believe in and they believe they are helping man kind. The Codex was made to stop mankind hurting themselves. Honestly i prefear them to all the other terrible factions. Mr House- 400 year old man who kills the kings if they help freeside and is surrounded by machines 24-7. NCR-Corrupt and inefficient, incapable of helping the mojave. Legion-Bunch of slavers and murderers who base their civilisation on one that worked more than 2000 years ago.

Atleast the BoS believe they are helping mankind and most of the people in the brotherhood seem quite civilised and polite

Good thing I had that little option removed recently!
Besides, I agree with you Colonel about the western chapters at least, I hope people like McNamara will learn before it is too late. As for me, i got my training from Lyons, so when we went off, we now know better, and now do what we can to help the locals as well. I know i am not perfect, but i try to help when i can. Now if you excuse me Colonel, I got to get some of these MF cells, i could use the Ammo.....

Curses Paladin :swear: -Detonates a pulse grenade on you-

The Brotherhood is failing, and their foolish loyalty to an ancient outdated rulebook is killing them. The squad Maxson led likely never forsaw them falling on such hard times, and now they are on said hard times, unwilling to conscript locals as troops.

With open minded people like MacNmara in the BoS im pretty sure they will start making changes to avoid certain destruction. If he is opened minded enough to ally with the NCR, im sure he is open minded enough to make a few changes to ensure the Mojave chapters survival.
