The so called "warriors"

Post » Mon Nov 11, 2013 8:40 pm

So I've noticed there's a good amount of players, self-proclaimed "warriors classes", who don't really seem to be playing as actual warrior classes. A good amount of videos and comments of "warrior class" players using healing spells, crafted potions and crafted enchanted items and armour of all sorts. Playing an actual warrior class wouldn't be by focusing solely on Warrior skills? One-Handed, Two-Handed, Smithing, Block, Heavy Armor and Light Armor (though according to the warrior stone Light Armor belongs to the Thief class, I still consider it to be part of the Warrior class, as well as Thief [Nords are Warriors specialized in Light Armor, for example]).

Enchanting, Alchemy, Restoration and pretty much any other skill tree does not belongs to the Warrior class, and that would make you a mixed class, or Battlemage/Rogue, for most parts.

I've been playing as a pure Mage class for quite a long time. Not a single point made in non-Mage skills, except for Speech, and it's funny to see "warrior class" players saying Mages are times weaker, when they actually have top tier crafted gear which includes a ton of perks from Alchemy and Enchanting, that are NOT Warrior skills.

Some videos of "warriors" defeating the Ebony Warrior on Legendary, yet none of them were pure Warriors, because that would be nearly, if not absolutely impossible to defeat the Ebony Warrior on Legendary difficulty as a pure Warrior (that means without crafted enchanted gear and crafted potions), unlike a pure Mage class, which would just require the Impact perk and a crafted enchanted gear to reduce magicka cost of destruction spells to zero or near-zero, in order to kill him with no efforts at all.

Some people are just confused about their own class, when bashing other actual true classes.

Reminds me of the Nordic hypocrisy of hating magic while still using enchanted weapons.

Since when couldn't warriors use health potions? Even on other fantasy games I don't remember that...

Anyway, this is TES. The definitions of things are loose and up to interpretation, as it should be. To me, a warrior is anyone who primarily focuses on warrior skills. My warriors at most only use enchanting and restoration, which is said to be favored by warriors in TES before.

Except Nords don't hate magic. Common misconception. You want magic haters, look at the province to the left.

Some just feel compelled to use the stupid starting spells that every character is given at the beginning. No matter if your character is mage oriented or not. Still... most people that are members of this forum won't use them for specialized characters.

The key word in that would be "crafted" potions. :icecream: Insinuating that the Warriors he saw were also Alchemists.

Even then, I see nothing preventing a warrior from making his own health potions. It requires no magic skill at all. Same for enchanting.

I'd call that a smart and resourceful warrior.

I'm incline to agree.

I think the OP is putting too much into the way they screwed up the divy of skills among the stones. Archery is obviously a skill for Warriors, Rogues and Assassins.

EDIT :

I agree... aside from the Enchanting statement. I missed that in my initial response. That's not a skill I associate with non magical characters.

I think it's fine for a warrior to use an enchanted weapon that is looted or found but don't agree that they should be using enchanting as a crafting skill. To me, enchanting is a magic skill that should be used by magical characters, not the pure warrior types that the OP I think is referring to.

As ColonelKillaBee and Jesuis point out, Alchemy isn't necessarily a magic skill. A Warrior could well be capable of taking natural ingredients and using them to his/her advantage. Take poisons for instance - we have them in the real world, all around us, easily accessible; it never took an advanced society to make use of them, there are groups of people who make use of poisons from amphibians and other sources in hunting.

If enchanting took some kind of magical skill or magicka, I'd agree. It doesn't fit your typical warrior role, but if Ysgramor was discovered to enchant weapons, would you stop calling him a warrior?

I understand what the OP is getting at, why do people who call their characters "pure warriors" need to use all of the crafting skills whereas a pure mage only uses magic and has no business using smithing.

Well, a pure Mage wouldn't need anything else but his own crafted enchanted clothes - that means no potions, no armor, no weapons, nothing but his own body clothes and he's ready to go soft and clean on Legendary without a scratch. A noble Warrior scavenging enchanted items in order to become a bit stronger? And an enchanted item that was enchanted by a mage? That's quite pitiful. Add some potions (crafted by an alchemist) and that's sure a shame.

I consider pure Warrior classes to be times more fun to play than pure Mages, as Mages are just plain boring unless you're willing to spawn a pack of extremely powerful enemies with console commands or mods, in order to make it challenging (events that you would never find in the vanilla game), the problem is that with a pure Warrior class you would never be able to play on Legendary, as it would be nearly impossible to defeat the strongest enemies, or would take so much longer to kill them it would just become boring.

Enchanting is a Magical skill, it derives from Magic, and Magic isn't part of a Warrior's Attribute. Alchemy... perhaps, could be reasonable, if a Warrior was raised in the woods, learned survival skills, mixing ingredients, etc... though he would hardly be a Warrior if he's going for survival, would be more like Wood Elves - rangers, woodsman, hunters, rogues, etc...

Well, unless you're talking about pure warrior classes there's nothing that says they can't use mage or thief skills. Hybrid characters and all that. Besides, if you're out there fighting, your a warrior. Whether its spell or blade.

What? I don't even know how...what? That's exactly what it is.

Must be an MMO thing or something then. I don't get the pure mage pure warrior mentality. It just doesn't fit in TES in my opinion.

It takes zero knowledge of the schools of magic and it takes no magicka at all, unless you count the magicka used in the soul gems, but again that doesn't restrict a warrior in any way shape or form.

My warriors mainly use combat skills. The only other skill I use extensively is Restoration.

And warriors can use enchanted weapons. Nothing wrong with that.

Your enchanted weapons are directly related to your Destruction skill - Destruction perks affect your enchanted weapons. The higher your Destruction the lower your enchantment will be drained, if you have the damage perks, your weapons will as well increase in damage. If your Destruction magicka cost is reduced to zero, your weapon will remain eternally fully charged. In other words, Enchanting is, indeed, directly related to Destruction, as well as Magic in general.

I'm in agreement here and feel that enchanting definitely falls into the mage category and is a magic skill that any true warrior has no business dabbling in.That is just my opinion and how I choose to play, it doesn't bother me how other people play but if warriors are using all the crafting skills with maybe a bit of restoration thrown in to help things along a bit they are really just "jack of all trade" characters or spellswords as far as I'm concerned.

It's still a magic skill. It's a science. The game doesn't show it because gameplay(like the rest of the crafting skills) but you still pretty much have to be a mage of sorts to learn it. "Pure" warriors wouldn't touch it.

None of the other schools of magic require knowledge from another either, but they're still influenced by each other including Enchanting.

So your warriors are using restoration magic quite extensively, then they're spellswords aren't they?

Not quite. Destruction may make it better, but it is not at all required to make enchanting effective. No magic skill is. There's absolutely nothing stopping my non mage characters from making effective enchantments.

This seems more like headcanon than anything, as nothing lorewise says its a skill requiring the skill of a mage. Neither is that said in game. The only thing keeping warriors from dabbling in it is the magic related tag on it. Mages and warriors, as well as thieves can use the skill. After all, its not like warriors have to go to a mage to get it recharged either. They can do that themselves with soulgems whether they made the weapon themselves or not.

All fine as long as you don't call yourself a "warrior", while making use of Enchanting, Alchemy or Restoration spells, while bashing other real classes (such as a pure Mage or pure Warrior) for being "weaker" than your maxed out generic "warrior". You would be either a battlemage, spellsword or "alchemist-warrior" if you make usage of any Mage or Thief skill, be it Enchanting, Restoration, Alchemy or any non-Warrior skills, with the exception of Speech, for obvious reasons.

And a Warrior using enchanted/alchemy items even without having the skills will always be a puppet of Mages or Alchemists behind that crafted item, specially if you purchase them directly from Alchemists (potions) or Mages (soul gems).
