Sergeant Dobbs
SATCOM Array NW-05A - 0730 Zulu (2:30am)
The Talon Company Merc shivered in the night air as he peered over the top of SATCOM Array NW-05A's dish, looking out over the Wasteland from 150 ft in the air. Nothing, as usual. "I cannot believe we're working for a ghoul.", thought the merc sourly. "I guess it's true that Talon Company will take any job for the right amount of caps!". He stepped down to the base of the dish, then grabbed the coffeepot from above the small campfire and poured himself another cup, then climbed back up to his post. Still nothing. "Only thing out here is Raiders, and after we fired a couple missiles at them even they don't come around anymore", thought the bored sentry. "I wish I could get on day shift...at least then I could shoot a Mole Rat or something. Hopefully Bannister will send out a relief team so they can go back, and maybe get a posting where I can kill someone. Haven't heard from them in two days."
Nine thousand feet above SATCOM Array NW-05A, the figure plummeted head first towards the earth at 32 feet per second, ignoring the panoramic view of the Wasteland that few had seen in the last two centuries in order to concentrate on the objective below. "A campfire to mark the target for me." the figure thought as he looked at his watch/altimeter, "How considerate. I will have to thank them....in four minutes".
Site R - Briefing Room - 1900 Zulu (2:00 pm) - the previous day
"This is basically a training mission for you, Dobbs.", said the Briefing Officer. "We want to make sure your skills are still sharp, the Big Push is coming, and we need everyone in top form if we are going to finally purify America."
"Excellent idea, sir", Dobbs said sincerely. "I haven't killed anything in six months...the simulators don't count."
"We estimate you'll only get to eradicate four to five individuals.", began the Briefing Officer. "Plenty more where that came from, but we've got to start somewhere." The Officer turned on the holo-projector, and a image of SATCOM Array NW-05A appeared. "They are illegally squatting on Federal Property, this SATCOM Array, which is not far from here. That alone is a Capital Offense, but they have compounded it by using the uplink to get control of still active Bradley-Hercules Orbital Weapons Platform in Low Orbit. Having Wastelanders in control of America's precious military assets just will not do. The plan is to insert you into the top of the Array via HALO jump. You will work your way down, securing the Satellite Control Terminal in the Dish Access space...here. You will then summarily execute all trespassers on Federal Property in accordance with Executive Order 2274-19."
"This mission actually sounds like fun!", said Dobbbs. "What do we know about the Trespassers? Hopefully they'll be at least a little challenging to kill!"
"A Moderate threat", said the Briefing Officer. "Most will be Talon Company mercs, one will be thier employer."
"I thought we were allying with the Talon Company, sir.", said Dobbs. "It wouldn't be right to attack our allies. I must respectfully decline this mission as it goes against my ethics."
The Briefing Officer and Dobbs stared at each other for several seconds before both simultaneously burst into howls of laughter.
"You almost had me until you threw in that melarky about ethics, Sergeant.", said the Briefing Officer after composing himself. "We both know you'd kill your own mother if someone with a higher rank told you to do it. Moving on...we've been jamming thier communications for days now so they do not know thier Commanders have allied with us. No one will miss them, part of Talon Company rebelled and assassinated Commander Jabsco yesterday. The mercs at the Array are assumed to have thrown in thier lot with them."
"Good enough for me....when do I get to go earn my pay?"
"Wheels up at 0700 Zulu (2:00 am). Go get some sack time, soldier!"
"Sir, yes, Sir!"
SATCOM Array NW-05A - 0734 Zulu (2:34am)
Dobbs, his chute now open, glided towards the SATCOM Array. As the Merc standing sentry inside he dish liked to look South for some reason, he had decided to approach from the North. Drifting in, as soon as his feet hit the inside of the dish, Dobbs pulled his silenced 10mm and shot the startled Merc twice in the head before he could even turn around enough to see him. Rapidly gathering up his chute, he moved behind the hatch to the Dish Access space below and removed the chute. After about 30 seconds, the hatch opened and another merc climbed up.
"What the f***, Jimmy?", said the Merc as he walked towards his friend, lying away from the hatch. "You drinking again and fell down? Jabsco will have your..."
Two shots into the back of his head from Dobb's silenced pistol made sure he never ended that sentence.
Dobbs then looked down the hatch, no one was in the Dish Access Space so he dropped his chute inside then climbed down and closed the hatch behind him. Checking the Satellite control terminal, he saw that the launch codes had not been entered. He then hacked the Terminal and entered the lock code he had been given by Command. Now the Terminal could not be used by anyone but the Enclave. After cracking the door to make sure no-one was there, he walked out into the next lower level. As he walked along the walkway towards the hatch to the main body of the Array, he surprised and terminated another merc, this one with a Rocket Launcher and took his ID badge that marked him as "friendly" to the interior defenses. Having verified no one alive was on this level, he then opened the hatch and entered the main part of the Array.
Inside, he found a fourth Talon Merc, this one sleeping in one of the bunks in the access space that led to the hatch outside. After making sure he never woke up, Dobbs cautiously proceeded down the stairs. On the next level, Dobbs found a terminal that controlled the interior defenses. He hacked the terminal and shut the turrets down. From his vantage point, he could see a ghoul...female...furiously typing on a terminal with her back to the stairs. Cautiously sneaking down the stairs, until he had snuck up so close to the ghoul that he could touch it. Dobbs then stood up straight and tapped the ghoul on the shoulder with the silencer of his pistol, then stepped back so the ghoul could stand. "Who the hell are you!", demanded the ghoul as she stood up. "How did you get in here?"
"You are guilty of Trespassing on Federal Property, Misappropriation of War Department Property, and unlawful possession of a mutated genetic structure.", said Dobbs coldly as he shot the ghoul twice in the chest. "The sentence is Death."
Once the ghoul crumpled to the ground, he searched the corpse and found the launch codes, then unlocked the door and walked outside. "Command, this is Barracuda.", said Dobbs over his suit radio. "Package is secured."
"Affirmative, Barracuda.", radioed Command. "Four minutes, 27 seconds. Not bad. Extraction bird is in the air, ETA seven minutes. Good work, Command out."
Dobbs waited for the Extraction Vertibird to bring the force to secure the Array and take him back to Site R. Dobbs was proud of his good night's work. America was just a little bit cleaner.
Site R - Simulation Room - 1930 Zulu (2:30 pm)
Sergeant Dobbs waited for the simulator pod to fully open and climbed out. "Finally got the op under five minutes", thought Dobbs. "Hopefully they'll finally give me a real mission. I'm itching to kill some muties!"
"Sergeant Dobbs", the voice from the PA system said. "Sergeant Dobbs, please report to Briefing Room Charlie."
"Maybe this is finally it!", Dobbs thought hopefully.
