Monroe
Launch Control Center Delta - Fort Constantine
Monroe sat at the Commander's desk with his boots on the desktop, and to pass the time he leafed through the 200 year old papers he had picked up off the desk.
"Hopefully Brainiac will find a way to get through that door", thought Monroe as he read a after-action report detailing how Chinese saboteurs had been caught attempting to disable the missile in the silo outside the base a few hours before the world got blown up....good thing he had repressed the urge to use the code he found upstairs to launch it for s**** and giggles. "It was pure luck Mitch found that key in Rivet City." Some bimbo who wh*red herself for drinks had blabbed to Mitch about some loser who she turned tricks with that had told her about his special key that would make him rich.....she followed a hunch and tracked him down and traded some chems for the key and the story. That got them in here, after Brainiac shut down the robots they found another door that didn't work with the single key they had.
"Tenpenny, Dukov, Crowley, and Dave", said aloud as he tossed the clipboard and ancient report back on the desk. Old Man Tenpenny was dead, of course. Mieux had killed him...his story that the Old Man fell on his own was laughable...and took his place. Most likely the real story died with Tenpenny, though he'd sent Mitch back out to see what she could find out about the others. If that got nowhere, he'd consider bringing it up with Mieux if he placed more orders for building supplies. Brainiac was convinced the underground passageways led to the door inside the Bomb Storage building that also required a special key. All those old bombs gave him the creeps, even if the records Brainiac found said they couldn't blow up because the detonators had been stored at some place North of here called "Adams Air Force Base", but it was a good place to store the weapons and ammo they sold for caps or traded for new meat for the Mill. There might be something salable down there, but mainly, Monroe didn't want any surprises. The Old Worlders were nuts and you never knew what sort of crap they left laying around that could kill the unwary or stupid in the blink of an eye. He wouldn't be happy until he knew what was down here.
He heard movement on the stairs to his right, and turned to look. It was Brainiac, followed by a Sentry Bot and a Mr Gutsy.
"No luck, Boss", said Brainiac sadly. "That door isn't budging without the key. Got these bots re-programmed, though. The other sentry bot is screwed though, I'm going to break it up for parts."
"Alright, Brain...", began Monroe. "I've got a question though, what is a 'Minuteman XI?" He then picked up a card off the desk and handed it to him. "And what does this do?"
Brainiac took the card and looked at it and turned ghost white and trembled a bit as he read it and realized what it was, he then walked across the room and looked at one of the still operational control panels, labeled "D Flight Status". As he remembered, 9 of the 10 silos this facility had controlled were empty according to this readout, but the 10th, silo 3, still contained a missile. "Uh, Boss...", said Brainiac, "That's the code to launch this missile here. I think doing that would be a bad idea."
"No [censored], Brainiac.", laughed Monroe, he hadn't seen Braniac this scared since the day five years ago he had stepped into the Arena with nothing but a rusty Chinese sword to win back his freedom. "I don't need you to tell me that. Can you shut that thing down before some pinhead figures out how to fire it?" Monroe only knew all this because the terminal on the Desk in front of him had reacted to the proximity of the card by displaying a readout telling him what Brainiac had just said...but it didn't hurt to remind him he wasn't completely ignorant.
"Sure Boss", said Braniac with great relief as he realized Monroe had been playing stupid to get a rise out of him. "I'll get right on that." He then turned his attention to the panels. "If you're going back up, could you take the bots with you? They need you to put in your voice control override, then they are ready to go where you want".
Monroe repeated the phrase that Brainiac had taught him to the robots, that programmed them to recognize him as thier commander. Once they acknowledged it, he then led them back up through the basemant of the CO's Quarters then outside. "I'll put them in Bomb Storage for now", thought Monroe. "Got enough bots on patrol already." Seeing that the escort for the latest meat shipment bound for the Pitt to the Train Tunnel....10 bodies, not a bad haul...had just returned safely, he trudged up the hill to Bomb Storage, the robots following obediently behind.
