The Chameleon effect is horrible

Post » Sat Dec 05, 2015 2:05 pm

I found a chameleon armor today, and was dumbfounded to discover that it both a) renders the pipboy totally unusable, and b ) makes aiming impossible.

Problem a) is not at all understandable. It's a simple problem with colorization that it seems no mod has been able to fix.

Problem b ) is a little more understandable, since weapons is part of the you and thus becomes invisible. But the gameplay problem is huge when I can't aim at all anymore. A solution should've been found before they decided that was the effect they wanted to go with. A semi-translucent effect would do the trick, or letting any sights with "glow" still show their glow (like reflex sights for instance). That would've been just as fine, but the current situation is certainly not.

Please fix this Beth! <3

I had posted about this problem not too long ago. Unfortunately, it wasn't addressed in the recent patch.

It's a big problem if you are using a stealth build because the chameleon effect is so nice for that... but you literally can't use the pip-boy unless you go out of stealth mode, which, obviously, causes all sorts of issues.

Anyway, I hope it is fixed soon or that someone makes a mod to deactivate the chameleon graphics effects for the time being.

Thats the price you pay for superior camouflage.

Reflex sights are particularly bad with it as they completely distort whatever you're aiming at. I've been known to stand up just before taking a shot, which is a bit self defeating.

I think I may just ditch the arm/leg/whatever has this ability.

Usually I only access the Pipboy to heal in a combat situation, but it is annoying to have to stop moving, wait for my guy to ready his weapon, and then access the pipboy so that I can read the inventory screen. It hasn't gotten me killed yet, but it's come close a few times.

A graphical bug is the price you pay? lol... no, it's not supposed to work that way. They shouldn't be using a jacked up graphical bug to balance the game, and I'm sure they didn't intend to.

While those 2 issues are bad, the overall visual filter that gets applied to everything when you go "stealth" is horrific. All factors combined, I will never willingly use those items without some sort of fix (whether vanilla or a mod).

I use it exclusively, how is it a bug? It works exactly as it should....You shouldn't be able to see the pipboy as it's also camouflaged....

The effect isn't even that good... I do miss the older fallout's stealth mode... seems to work a lot better.

put a scope on your gun. you can aim through those fine. if you are doing the stealth sniper thing you should have a scoped gun anyhow.

For in combat healing or weapon swapping, you can just hotkey things like a stimpack, its not like you need to heal mid combat a lot if you are doing the stealth thing well after all ;)

That said, the unusable pipboy is damn annoying. I finish a quest or whatever and go to look up something in my pip boy. ug, unreadable. exit pipboy, stand, open pipboy, still blurry, didnt wait long enough, exit, wait a sec, reopen pipboy again, can finally see the two words I wanted to look at. Just a dumb design.

If your talking about invisibility, no you shouldn't be able to see your gun or your pipboy while you are cloaked. That makes just no since at all.

Hotkey the Aid Items you like to use, like a pro?

Anyway, this feature is likely to fall under the category of "Working as Intended."

It may be "working as intended". My opinion is that what they intended is wrong. It's horrible gameplay. It's a struggle to find out what to drop or keep when I'm sneaking around in a location. How much am I carrying again? Pip-boy is a problem outside of combat. Aiming is a problem in combat. Aiming outside of VATS is often preferable for accuracy, but outside of scopes it can't be done. It may be "as intended" and I have issues with the solution.

I know "it's just my opinion" but I'm not about to preface everything I post with "sorry this is only my opinion, so whatever, but I really, like, uhm, think that this is kinda not perfect". I haven't listened that much to Diamond City Radio ;)

Take your chameleon gear off, aim down your sights and stick a tiny bit of paper on your screen right in the middle of the crosshair so it resembles a dot. Thats your aiming point when you look down your sights. Now you just put the dot on what youre trying to shoot.

You then also shouldn't be able to open your pipboy in the middle of combat without enemies still attacking and your arm bouncing around as you fight them off, or lockpick with impunity during combat etc...

they should have went full science and make you blind in first person since the light passes straight through and doesn't reflect off the back of your eye.

This thread is so aweful,

YOUR INVISABLE.

That means your pipboy is invisible, your gun that your holding is invisible, and no you cannot tell me that being able to use your watch to read the time of day when invisible makes any since.

100% working as intended.

If it was so that you could read your pipboy or see your 'iron sights" Bethsada would catch hell for it from "realism" fans and don't kid yourself on this.

Would be the first thing people would fix and more than that this is not the first time your pipboy was rendered invisible while stealth cloaked it was in the previous games as well.

A whole lot of things should be blocked then, because "realism". Made a few comments above to this end.

But for the sake of fun gameplay, it's best they're not blocked, and this horrible effect should be one thing that's fixed...for gameplay and fun.

But the Pip-boy isn't invisible. It just has really crappy colorization and contrast levels. If it were invisible it would seem a lot more like it was done by intent rather than just an unlucky side-effect.

The pip-boy is just a fancy way to show a game interface. When I take items from a container, that list isn't invisible. The compass and ammo count certainly doesn't disappear. The main game interface should not become unreadable because I have a magic briastplate of invisibility equipped.

Weapons are slightly different, I admit. However they could be /partially/ translucent, or the glow sights could still glow. Or something... Now it's just horrible.

Absolutely. What's more it's not necessarily invisibility it's just "you are harder to detect".
