The Cities

Post » Sun Jun 13, 2010 10:00 am

What would you like to see added, changed or removed from cities in TEV? Personally, I would like to see them all different layout, different laws per cities, go onto the cities walls, open cities, some poor whilst other are rich, etc.

Different. :) I like to come to a new city and have a wholly different architecture. But no worries about that, a good trend is set, as far as I'm concerned.

I don't know the infrastructure of Skyrim personally, but I assume it probably has a Nordic flare to it, especially with the weather they must deal with. So in that regard they definitely need to fit the province, and of course we want them big and spacious.

I think if the cities were like those in morrowind, it would be pretty great
maybe a bit more fortified, since I'm getting a kind of tribal war feeling.

Personally, i liked the citys like the houses. The feeling of a seperated cell seems almost a unique trademark to bethesda. Its cool walkinginto a warm colored-cozy log cabin, knowing your safe form the harsh weather of skyrim and any wild creatures that may be hiding in its forests/mountains. It would be more realistic to have an open city, and i wouldnt mind, but i like the feeling of being in a temporary safe-haven with its own individual things going on. Like, the mental transition from worrying about wolves, to worrying abotu pickpockets. Worrying about wolves and pickpockets at the same time seems a bit clausterphobic in my opinion. Plus, although it would be hilarious, the distraction of villager being attacked by an ice ogre that just so happened to be following me for miles.

Yeah, I've had the image of Skingrad floating in my head somewhat.

All different. Have you ever seen 2 identical towns/cities?

And I voted no for open cities, only because it will have to load the area anyway, so I would rather see the concept art and the advice. But if they make it so that it does not have to load the area, than I want certain cities to be open, contingent upon whether or not they have a gate.

We know a few things about Skyrim. Markarth Side has the College of the Voice, Winterhold is built on top of the ruins of Saarthal, Whiterun is big in mining and is ruled over by a priestess of Lorkhan.

Skyrim is actually pretty unique and varied in its locations. The Western Reach is said to be pretty freakin' nice, too.

Bruma is influenced by Nordic architecture, so there is no doubt there will be similliar cities ... Wooden houses mostly. I like Bruma's looks ...
I would love to see them open !

I would rather the cities be closed from the outside if only to stop marauding animals from murdering everyone, however it would be nice to be able to just walk into your house and look out the window as well. I don't know why I always want to be able to look outside my window XD

I'd like them to be bustling and seem as alive and dynamic as possible. After that, size and open/closed, varied architecture, etc. are nice but not nearly as important.

They have to look as if folk live in them, you cant have hundreds of people walking around like assassins creed if there are only so many houses in each city.

I want all the cities to be different because I like variety

As far as walled cities go I'm not sure. Monsters can and have killed npcs necessary to complete certain quests and when you get that quest you find out that the npc needed for that quest has died. Part of the reason they did the cities the way they did was to in part solve this problem. Unless some other solution comes about (ie guards protect the towns while citizens run to some protective shelter) then it can be problematic. If they can fix that problem (without making quest npcs essential) then I'm all for cities being open and not in a separate cell.

I can't count the amounts of times I was fleeing for my life and the guards from a city (Notably Caldera.) would run out and help me. Though I agree there needs to be a limit if the creature is not say, following the player to that city/town. Just spawn them far enough away they never see the people avoiding an attack.

I want the cities to be open, like Morrowind. That way we can have levitation spells! :)

Basically I want them to be exactly like the better cities mod for OB. But open. (Which better cities is doing anyway)

Since there are 8 main cities in Skyrim, we could have 4 of them life Oblivion, and the rest open?

how in the world were all of the cities in Oblivion the same, they all had original architecture, the only real thing that was the same for all of them was the walls, all the castle were varied greately and even the cathedrals were changed up

Morrowind was terrible, every house was the same in every city

I want the major cities too all be unique, with their own architectural style, dominant race, and location, much like Oblivion. I also want small, wall-less outposts and towns scattered amongst the map, for pitstops and whatnot.
I hope they are dynamic, maybe the Dragon Born has his own city, that he can upgrade. Like Assassins Creed 2

I'd prefer them to be open, allowing for the return of levitate, best spell ever. Hopefully more lively than the previous games, maybe having a real city feel.

In the same regions the cities should be similar but between regions there should be lots of variety. When I say regions it's because I'm hoping for many small cities like in Morrowind.

Variety is the key to success. I loved Oblivion, but every town was pretty similar. (Until Better Cities  )
I'd like the towns to be more mixed and matched this time with different architecture and different features.

With regards to having open cities, i'd like it. As long as it didn't have a profound affect on performance.

Some should be different, whilst some others the same. That's kinda how it is in the real world, and as I'm all for realism it sounds like a good choice.

Definitely open cities as well. In the sense that they share the same game space with the rest of the world. Saying that though, I do not mind loading into interiors (if the engine can't do it). If it can do it, then well I want my interiors to be in the same world space too. :D
