The "CoD" crowd, what does this mean?

Post » Mon Dec 09, 2013 2:00 am

Apparently I'm in the minority, but I honestly liked the campaign in the one CoD game I've played more than the multi-player. It was fun to blow up the Eiffle Tower. I was like "take that Frenchies."

But, in my opinion, Skyrim is closer to an FPS than it is an RPG. So, in a way, the game has been CoD'd out. Or Halo'd, or BF'd. Whichever you prefer I guess. I still like Skyrim, but I don't think its an RPG.

You're not entirely. I really liked the first Modern Warfare's story.

Deny all you like that Todd and co didn't bend much of Skyrims mechanics towards the swarm that made COD a "success" its ok.

Don't listen to the blind fanatical fans of Morrowind, they've had nostalgia goggles firmly glued to their face since 2006 and are blind to any beauty beyond 2002 ;)

Morrowind was considered to cater to the COD crowd when it came out.

I actually enjoyed COD, fun game, but have not played since MW2. Single player kept me thinking quick, the story itself was really good, with a few twist that I just did not see coming, Multiplayer was pretty fun too. I really did not get any kids screaming at me, might be the console I use.

Really, I won't worry, as someone in the other forums said, When Morrowind came out, it was the worse game ever, when Oblivion came out, Morrowind was the best game ever, when Skyrim came out, Oblivion was the best game ever.

Don't mind what other people say, if you enjoy the game play it! :D

CoD might not be what you want. It does not resemble Skyrim in anyway. CoD is not immersive.

Funny thing about that. I played Morrowind after I played Skyrim and Oblivion. Morrowind is one of my favorites and a hell of a lot better then Skyrim. I just don't understand how in two entries you get from Morrowind to Skyrim.

Tell me, other than the ability to choose to do a quest or not, what RPG elements are present in Skyrim? Attributes? No. Alignment? No. Classes? No. The choices you make having any effect on the game world? No. It honestly amazes me that anyone that has any experience with any type of RPG, whether it be a video game or pen and paper, can call Skyrim an RPG. Its an FPS with a few, and I stress the word FEW RPG elements added to it. If it wasn't for the fact that our characters are in a fantasy setting and use swords instead of guns, noone in their right mind would think this game is an RPG.

Funny considering I played Morrowind well after first playing Oblivion and liked it far better than either the aforementioned or Skyrem. Still not as good an RPG as Fallout NV, Baldur's Gate 2 or if I gave a damn about Star Wars probably KOTOR but it still had the richest game world and culture I've ever seen and minimal hand holding, probably the pinnacle of the Elder Scrolls series. And it's not just Morrowind I fondle over in the older TES games, Daggerfall had the best dungeons and character choices if you can actually complete the buggy mess of a game. It also had a realistic economy where money was not simply an object but much like the real world with weighted gold and banks.

Classes were removed because of the issue Todd brought up within that quote on the first page regarding oblivion. As limited as they might be there is still choices in the game, just doesn't impact the world or lore of the game that much. Dawnguard had choices that effect how the main quest played out.
I could argue Attribute points were completely pointless but I won't bother with this.

RPG is Role-Playing-Game: Skyrim is a RPG with action elements imo, mean while fallout is a Shooter with RPG elements and same goes with Call of Duty with Multiplayer.

Also to claim Skyrim isn't a RPG is pretty ridiculous the only thing close to Skyrim being a shooter is using bow and arrows or Crossbows and Bolts. That's it.

As far as topic is concerned: people have just misinterpreted and twisted Todd's comments when he mention CoD in terms of Wanting TES to have a large fanbase LIKE CoD. Completely different.

Action with RPG Elements vs RPG with Action Elements

It depends on what has more of which. Does Skyrim have more RPG in it or Action? You role play a character and there's action. Honestly, I'd just call it both.
