The "CoD" crowd, what does this mean?

Post » Sun Dec 08, 2013 6:40 pm

I do not play Call of Duty, but I see people comparing it to skyrim, usually in reference to how TES has catered to this style of game with skyrim. What does that mean, particularly? And, if I like RPGs with complex mechanics and an open world like skyrim, should I look into getting CoD? I like immersive games, but spend few dollars on gaming.

Not wanting a flame war here, but please give me your opinion on whether i would enjoy it. I enjoy open world, seemingly endless choice, deep character development, and great control over the game experience (sliders, options, toggles, etc.) I dislike cinematics, reflex skills, and having to fight the Boss ten times just to beat it.

it doesn't mean anything, I've not seen any evidence that Skyrim has attracted CoD players in any great numbers.

Its just like claiming the series has been ruined by console players or accusing people of only liking earlier games because of nostalgia a substitute for real argument.

Not sure if sarcasm that will likely instigate something or OP actually has an interest in Call of Duty and would like input.

A much more appropriate area to post such would be in the Community section.

Call of Duty is as simple as a shooter gets. Easy to play and rather enjoyable (sometimes addicting to some). Single player, IMO, is actually pretty good in terms of story/plot in most cases for Call of Duty. It can be enjoyable on the first go but there is no reason to go back and play it again unless you want the worthless collectibles. However, the single player is full of many cutscenes displaying sheer amounts of epicness that only Michael Bay could possibly approve of if he developed video games and it's extremely linear with no such exploration that can be done between levels, so I am not sure you'd like it.

The main highlight of Call of Duty however, is the multiplayer which is probably the more enjoyable, popular, and as I said before, addicting, part of the game. You create different classes with different equipment such as weapons and perks, and use them to go out and kill other players in various game modes. You progress and unlock more as you level up and complete challenges.

All in all, its a simple and easy game to play. Note though that there is an obvious difference between shooter and RPG. It has nothing in common with Skyrim besides being just as easy to play.

Yes, I took your question that literal because it's better than the alternative of what everyone is going to reply like.

That's what many people think is the crowd Bethesda wanted. Simple, casual players...I'm one of them. Though I've stopped liking CoD since MW3.

It's a way of insulting other people's opinions by using a vapid buzzword. It is generally a sign that this person has trouble thinking for himself and has to rely on something he has heard someone else say. It is my experience that anyone who uses second-hand words like COD - or "casual" - to belittle another person's tastes rarely have anything original to say.

You may like the multiplayer if you're into shooters as there is much in the means of customization. However, I'm more into Battlefield. It has much more open combat and is less of a brawl. There's also quite the display of vehicles, but remember that shooters are only like Skyrim with the amount of customization of the player. The main aspect of these games would be of course the gun play.

Exactly. Whenever you hear of someone saying "attracting the cod crowd" this is what they mean. Usually these types of folks should just be ignored because we are all gamers who like different things.

Skyrim is just a great great game. I am a hardcoe call of duty fan who also loves Skyrim. I gave both Morrowind and oblivion but liked neither.

The main reasons I don't like CoD is because I don't like those "tactical extreme 'merica manly navy seals muslim/russian terrorist nuke" stuff. And also the campaign is not worth the money, and I don't like the multiplayer because of the reason above. But I don't hate shooters because I love guns, and I also love RPG.

On the other hand, I do play "mainstream" games like Battlefield because it's just pure fun to hear someone cuss his brain out because you just blew it off from a mile away. Otherwise I don't play BF for close combat because of the same reason as I described COD; I just like to snipe and C(unt)4 to piss people off. :P

But games like Unreal Tournament and Halo are the bombs, IMO. Large, complex and interactive environment with vehicles and sci-fy weapons, also great physics engine. Especially UT, as it has some crazy weapons and vehicles, as well as large battlefields... And I swear, you can't call yourself "skilled" at shooter until you have played and defeated everyone on a UT Rocket Match.

And... outb4pitchfork

Storm in an water glass over some random comment Tod said about how popular he wanted Skyrim to become.

He used CoD as example as it sold very well. He think its hard as he get eaten in multiplayer the few times he had tried it.

Its an reason Obama always use teleprompter and pre written speeches. Because if he don't people would not only hang up in all sort of petty mistakes but they also anolyze everything he says up and down.

He learned from Bush who not always used teleprompter, results was some good ones but more stupid or nonsense comments.

My description would be:

People with short attention span who like simple and easy gameplay that gives instant gratification.

Many games have been CoDified these days, including Battlefield to increase sales.

Now I have not played any shooters this console generation, Oblivion, Fallout 3/NV, some strategy and city builder games, WOW, Skyrim and Kerbal space program.

Yes I'm an terrible customer, the gaming industry should stop making MMO, sandbox and multiplayer games as they kill sales.

However after your description it sounds very unlike elder scroll, who have very few cutscenes, non in Skyrim, yes it had some setting where the player could not move, usualy for good reason. I might say Skyrim is pretty non linear and it has an lack of multiplayer as far as I know

In short as unlike CoD gameplay you can get in an first person game, the lack of guns, multiple types of elves and ever stranger stuff is minor feature in this overview, comparing Skyrim with WOW or GTA would make more sense, yes they are totally different games but they at least share some features.

CoD is a first person shooter with a linear storyline. Your task is to acquire modern weapons and blast your way through the scenarios wwithout getting mowed down yourself.

Not my cup of tea for sure though a lot of people like it.

I'd say if you want something immersive then go for Battlefield. COD is just a game to chill with friends.

Comparing Call of Duty to Skyrim is like comparing a watermelon to an allosaurus.

But the Watermelon is a juicy delicious snack while an Allosaurus today is a dusty pile of bones.

Cod- Absolutely [censored] series but can be really fun to play until people start shouting insults and if you get into a modded game.

TES- Amazing series and always extremely fun to play.

its a misinterpretation of a quote by a dev..

he said it in a sense that they would like a fan-base as large and Loyal so CoDs
However people twist his words into saying "he wants all the people that play CoD, so they are dumbing down the franchise", which is completely not true..

Absolutely. He just wanted to express his comments about how his games could attract them with some similar elements such as personal customization.
