Hi, I'm going to be graduating HS and heading off to college in a few months. I have been saving my money for the past few months and before I leave I wanted to make a desktop to bring with me as my computer has passed its glory days. Too make it short and simple I'll have about ~1,000 dollars dedicated to a desktop before I leave in August. I have a 24' LCD Monitor, and to give you an idea what games I play/am looking to play; Fallout 3, Oblivion, Team Fortress 2, Witcher, World of Warcraft, possibly new Star Wars MMO. If possible would like to throw in some light multimedia features but here is what I'm looking to buy with this 1,000:

Basic components for desktop - CPU, GPU, etc
Windows 7 - cheapest version

Also I'd like this computer to last for about 4-5 years, so if possible I'd like it to be versatile and upgradable. Maybe upgrade a few parts every so often. I'm not someone who has to have top of the line graphics either. I am willing to overclock a little, I just want a computer that can perform. Can anyone give me suggestions where to look and what to buy.

$1K is a healthy budget, but I'm not so sure you'll be content with the performance 4 years from now. May be a little slacking in new games by then so you gotta keep upgrading at least as an option between now and then. If you're not buying right now or within the next few weeks, may want to wait until then to ask....technology and deals (pricings) do change abruptly. Here's what you can get currently (assuming you're building this yourself):

CASE+CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.380915
GPU+PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.362038
MOBO+RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.368375
HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185
DVD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135209
OS: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116754

Just under $1K. Can be modified a bit if you need to save a bit more, but I'd strive to save enough for something like this. If you can manage to get a discounted version of Win 7 from Uni....this system will be well within budget.

Wow, I just ordered that Samsung hard drive over the weekend and it already went up in price from 75 bucks to 90! Aren't I lucky?

So yesterday I bought a new PC case and a new hard drive. So after the few hours it took me to install everything in the new case I plugged in the new HDD alone and tried to install windows on it (I didn't put the old HDDs in). When I try to install windows it tells me that there isn't a hard drive present, or that there is another problem with other disk devices. There is only a CD/DVD player that falls in that category. I checked the bios and it does detect the HDD. What can I do to make this work?

motherboard: EVGA nForce 750i SLI
HDD: Western Digital FALS 1 TB

All right problem solved! I forgot to change the old BIOS settings and disable raid. Now it's installing!

So I've just been attacked by a virus. I reckon I've fixed it now (Malwarebytes anti-malware ftw) but I wanna make sure there's nothing lurking that hasn't been picked up.

Can anyone recommend any scans to use and have any tips on how I can spot any evil things lurking on my PC?

I use a combination of SuperAntiSpyware and CCleaner. SuperAntiSpyware gets rid of the virus(es) and then CCleaner cleans out my registry incase they left anything behind.

Did anyone else's pants just get a bit tighter?

If I had the money-- and an AMD motherboard-- I would buy that in a heartbeat.

Yyyeeaaa...

Luckily, though, this just means that in a month or two, the quad-core I'm looking at will be down in price :D

Also, "hexacore" just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it?

Hey all!

Recently I've had an issue with one of my older pcs and would like some direction. I have been getting ready to reinstall windows and I was going into safe mode one last time to do some things. As it begins to load safe mode it randomly shut off. Now it will not turn on whatsoever. I noticed that plugging the power cord in makes the PSU light flicker then go off. If I wait a few seconds and unplug/plug back in it will do it again. I have tried multiple power cords/outlets to no avail so I'm not really sure how to proceed. Is my PSU dead? the MoBo? Is there tests I can run?

Thanks for all the help. :)

EDIT: I also used the switch on the back of the PSU to no avail. :(

Alright guys, I'm having issues.

First, I bought a new PSU and video card (Radeon HD 3650). I tried installing the PSU, PC runs but nothing comes on monitor. Tried everything, no go.

Took out the PSU and installed my old one. Installed video card. Works. Great. Nooooow.....I downloaded the drivers for it of ATI's website but after I install and reboot, Windows keeps installing it's own drivers for it and nothing gets done.

This is so fustrating. The driver CD that came with the card is useless it just brings up a webpage that has broken links...

EDIT: Man this is making me raaaaaage..................

There are some motherboards with Thuban support already. Gigabyte has a bunch of 'em, and ASUS will soon. Other modern motherboards with Socket AM3 support, 770 or better chipset, and DDR3 will probably be getting BIOS updates to support it soon. The 1090T is 125W TDP, and not all motherboards will be able to handle the power draw. I'd get official confirmation from the manufacturer before getting one.

Is that the hec power supply you mentioned last week? If you made sure everything was connected correctly (it's easy to forget the 12V auxiliary connector, or even force it in the wrong way), RMA it and either use the power supply you have (a 3650 is not a power hog) or order a good one.

Windows shouldn't supersede the drivers unless they didn't install for you. Catalyst just doesn't come with the most reliable installer, and it's possible the install didn't really work.

This sounds like a power supply failure, though it could be a disk failure if it shows up that late in boot, or a RAM failure. Can you boot from a Linux live CD to make sure the machine can finish booting at all (using a live CD avoids the disk; if it boots a live CD but not the hard disk, suspect the disk).

Nah, I bought a 700W PSU from Staples today (I know I know...) and nada.

I'm actually playing Fallout 3 and Oblivion right now with no problems so I might just keep this PSU and return the other one. Maybe throw the other one in my moms computer.

And yeah, the installer svcks big time. I got it to work though. Although I can't get the catalyst control center installed.

Actually, at this point I can't boot up at all. The light just flickers on the psu light when I plug the power cord in. I think its dead too but would I be able to tell if it was the mobo that died? Also, is there a way to determine if any of the other parts are okay (might have to get a new psu before I can do this part).

And about what kind of psu to get:
The info for this older pc says http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00060819&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&dlc=e&cc=us&lang=e&product=397963 (Go to "Power") This confuses me because navigating a little more on the page shows that the case is http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00063272&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&dlc=e&cc=us&lang=e&product=397963 (Very bottom). Do I need a MicroAtx PSU or an ATX one? Could I just get a new MicroAtx case with a decent PSU if I can't figure it out?

With the exception of some very small microATX cases, they all take "ATX12V" or "EPS12V" power supplies. If that's your PC (HP m490n), you need a standard ATX12V power supply. (EPS12V has some additional connectors you don't need, but it's also compatible.)

This is the best deal I can find at Newegg for a power supply that is a suitable replacement for an older computer: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153023

Yay, new problem! I just got back on my laptop, and my headphones won't play out of the left ear. However, the headphones themselves are fine, they work when plugged into my Ipod. I had a power outage earlier, but I don't think that it should have screw up the sound output. Anyway, no matter what I do there is never any sound coming from the left side. When I go into the sound manager and change the direction the sound comes from all the way to the left, all I get is static. Any help?

They are 5mm jack headphones, and if I have to I guess I could buy a 5mm-to-USB converter thingy, but that's only as a last resort if the 5mm jack is totally gone.

Thanks in advance,
Allstar

I had this EXACT same problem with my laptop. I went with the USB route until I could get my motherboard replaced. So... enjoy your new mobo if it's under warranty, hopefully.

Great. So how much did a new motherboard cost you? I know next to nothing about laptop motherboards.

Now that I think of it, why was only the sound output affected by the shock? Should I be worried that something else is fried that I haven't noticed yet?

EDIT: And where can I get one of those converters?

If it's under warranty they should replace it for free, I would think. If not, there's not much you can do, replacing the motherboard in a laptop on your own is probably exceedingly difficult.

And Ninja Monkey is right about replacing it. I really, really doubt you can do it yourself. You'll have to take it in to get repaired which will probably cost... a lot.

EDIT: With that link, I'm assuming you mean 3.5mm instead of 5. I can't think of any audio jack that is 5mm.

Woo. Time to buy a new processor. Birthday time.

Currently, I have an AMD Athlon II X2 64 on a GIGABYTE GA-MA770 I believe. I am wanting to up to four cores, though I'm not sure what I should get. I have about 150-200 to spend. I was thinking a Phenom II would suffice, though the six cores look mighty tempting. To help, I will post my dxdiag:

Well, I went through Newegg, and I narrowed it down to these two external soundcards. The Startech has more positive reviews, but I've never heard of them. TurtleBeach however, I have heard a lot of good things about (Specifically the Xbox headset). What would you guys but if you were in my position? If you have another recommendation, I'm be glad to hear it, but I can't go much above $30.

EDIT: It seems the Turtle Beaches are 5.1 channel, while the Startechs are only 2 channel. Since I spent $100 on a 5.1 headset, I rather make full use of them :P

EDIT: EDIT: Whoops. It seems that the Turtle's only have a headphone jack. I'll test my current mic jack later, hopefully it works still :ahhh:

With the exception of some very small microATX cases, they all take "ATX12V" or "EPS12V" power supplies. If that's your PC (HP m490n), you need a standard ATX12V power supply. (EPS12V has some additional connectors you don't need, but it's also compatible.)

This is the best deal I can find at Newegg for a power supply that is a suitable replacement for an older computer: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153023

I'm not so sure that the Thermaltake PSU will work since the dimensions of the old PSU are 6.00" Wide X 3.25" Tall X 4 " Deep. Would these dimensions make it a MicroAtx PSU or could I just look for an ATX PSU with similar dimensions?

With the latest F4 BIOS, your board will support the latest Phenom X6 chips:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3678/phenom-ii-x6-compatibility-over-170-boards-supported-at-launch

However, based on the benches I've seen, I think there's better value in the Phenom X4 955 BE. Bench:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3674/amds-sixcore-phenom-ii-x6-1090t-1055t-reviewed

I'm not so sure that the Thermaltake PSU will work since the dimensions of the old PSU are 6.00" Wide X 3.25" Tall X 4 " Deep. Would these dimensions make it a MicroAtx PSU or could I just look for an ATX PSU with similar dimensions?

If your PC is that specific model you linked, most standard ATX PSUs should fit. But 4" is rather shallow....is it crammed near the PSU in the case? If so, then you may have to look for a more shallow ATX PSU.
