How reliable are Zotac GPUs?

Looks like a nothing special chinese manufacturer using reference nVidia designs. Ships only to the UK/Europe...

Sorry I don't have much information on them, but why not get a XFX or Asus... something thats known to be reliable.

Zotacs are the only GTX 285s Scan have in stock. And after the merry ride Overclockers took me on before bluntly cancelling my order, I'm never going back to them. Local bricks-and-mortar shops haven't brought much joy either.

I don't know, they use reference designs so there shouldn't be any risks. Just check the warranty information. Better yet: Why not get a 5 series Radeon or a GTX 4 series Nvidia?

Alright, here's the deal. I have http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-172-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1155 mobo. I want a compatible GPU with performance around what the GTX 275 can offer, that isn't going to go pop after a week. I want it available now, and in my computer within a week. I want it to not be from Overclockers, and I want the staff of Overclockers pinned to the wall by their balls.

Help plz?

Usually this is either a driver issue or a motherboard issue:
Try upgrading the driver if possible.
Then make sure the integrated sound chipset is disabled (in the BIOS) and disable any ATI HDMI sound devices in the hardware device manager.
You can also try moving the physical location of the sound card to another slot, if an additional slot is available. Sometimes IRQ conflict with integrated devices. Mainly if a storage controller (ie SATA, IDE) occupts the same IRQ as a sound card it will cause this.
If your card has an extra drive bay attachment, try removing the communications cable to the unit. You'll have to plug any speakers in to the sound card directly.

Drivers are all up to date.

Integrated sound chip was disabled, naturally. I didn't install the HDMI drivers for my vid card because I had no need for them. Physical location change has been tried. I put it into the 8x slot and also into the 1x slot above the 16x slot.

Drive bay hasn't been installed.

How would one resolve IRQ conflicts? That may be the issue.

I have a question about CPU coolers. I had originally planned on using an artic cooling freezer 64 pro for my Phenom 955, but it's gigantic and I don't think it will fit in my system. The stock cooling on this thing is really loud, like a friggin vacuum cleaner in my computer. Are there any CPU coolers that are quiet and not so massive that would cool my 955 well?

EDIT: I drew a picture to illustrate why the freezer won't fit.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/Ninjabob/diagram.jpg

Obviously there's a lot more space between the PSU and everything else, but I ran out of room. Actually the cable is a bit shorter than in the picture though, it's maybe a half inch away from the CPU cooler I have now, with my case's top fan about a half inch above that. I have no idea why they made the cable that has to go all the way from the bottom of my case to the top the shortest.

A http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=n82e16812198005 takes care of the clearance problem. If you have the newer 8-pin style, you might need an http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812706004 instead. Don't let that deter you from getting that big nice cooler.

You're right, there's no rhyme or reason when it comes to cable lengths on power supplies. And that P4/EPS cable is almost always the worst offender.

Small question concerning networks.

I have a 54 Mbps network (Verizon (Fios I think))

The router is in my mom's office, and her laptop is hard-wired to the router. I am connected through wireless. (My computer is 1 floor above my mom's office)

Now, a 54 Mbps network is fairly fast (At least compared to what I see others have). Should I be getting very fast download speeds? Downloads through firefox hit maybe 300 kb/s or so. Game downloads through Steam are usually around 2 mb/s.

These download speeds are fine and I'm not complaining, but I'm just curious whether I should be getting faster download speeds.

If it matters, there are 4 computers connected to the network. My mom's laptop is wired. And my sister's laptop, my dad's desktop, and my desktop are connected wirelessly.

No, your speeds are what they should be. See you're being constrained by your connection to your Internet Service Provider, not the speed of the local network.

Also, just an FYI, 54 Mbps is about the standard connection speed for wireless LAN networks, most wired LAN are 100 Mbps or faster.

Ah ok. Thanks.

Yeah I checked my mom's laptop and she has 100 Mbps

Either way, your LAN speed is a way higher cap than your internet speed could ever achieve. The network speed means absolutely nothing to your internet speed.

Okay.... well I bought the Logitech MX620 mouse. Linky

I can't figure it out though, all the goodies it says it does. For example, it says that I can highlight a word or phrase, press the search button on the mouse, and it will instantly get me results in a search. Nothing happens when I do this.

Also, how would I go about configuring the buttons to do certain things in games? I'm a tad bit confused here, this is really the first non-generic mouse that I have owned, and the instructions that came with the mouse are just about installing it. Any help fellas?

Ok, a while back I posted asking for a good program to convert video files from a .mkv format to a more compatable format for other devices to stream through. After searching for a while I finally found a program I like, http://handbrake.fr/It works well and it is free. Just posting this for anyone else who is looking.

Ok guys, my friend wants to get a new gaming rig. His budget is $900 and he doesn't need anything, besides the OS and a monitor.
But he'll be buying it pre built so I just need a good build from whatever is the best website out there that ships to the US.
Thanks.

Try BuyXG as they have reasonable ratings and cheapest prices. The next competitor is CyberpowerPC, but a bit more expensive. Build:
http://www.buyxg.com/system/AMD_Phenom_Custom_Builder/detail

customize as such....

CASE: Apex Vortex 3620 Mid-Tower Gaming Case (Black Color)
CPU: AMD Phenom?II X2 550 Black Edition Dual-Core CPU w/ HyperTransport Technology
COOLING FAN: AMD ATHLON64 CERTIFIED CPU FAN & HEATSINK
MOTHERBOARD: GigaByte MA770T-UD3P AM3 DDR3 770 Chipset 1666+/1333/1066 with PCIe slot SATA RAID MB w/GbLAN,USB2.0,IEEE1394,&7.1Audio
MEMORY: 4GB (2GBx2) DDR3/1333MHz Dual Channel Memory (Corsair or Major Brand)
VIDEO CARD: ATI Radeon HD 5750 1GB DDR5 16X PCIe Video Card [DirectX 11 Support]
POWER SUPPLY UPGRADE: 600 Watts Power Supplies (CoolerMaster Silent Pro)...THE CHEAPEST POWER SUPPLY I WOULD EVEN CONSIDER HERE
HARD DRIVE: Single Hard Drive (500GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache 7200RPM HDD)
OPTICAL DRIVE: LG 22X DVD?R/?RW + CD-R/RW Dual Layer Drive (BLACK COLOR)
SOUND: HIGH DEFINITION ON-BOARD 7.1 AUDIO
USB PORT: Built-in USB 2.0 Ports
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit Edition)

Price before tax/ship: $772

Get the monitor elsewhere for cheaper. Suggestions:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236076&cm_re=asus_lcd-_-24-236-076-_-Product
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?app=forums&module=post§ion=post&do=reply_post&f=18&t=1084024&qpid=15818795

This should hover around the $900 mark...may have to shell out a bit more taxes/shipping though.

Alright, could someone please give me a list of GPUs compatible with http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-172-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1155 mobo, on a similar level to a GTX 275, and which manufacturers are good and which to avoid.

Ta much.

The Radeon 4890 was the direct competitor to the GTX 275 back then. The card may be getting more scarce now with the introduction of the Radeon 5770 and Radeon 5830. The Radeon 5850 is a beast if you can afford it. They are ATI cards though, so dunno if you're willing to go red. Sapphire, XFX, Asus, MSI, and HIS are pretty popular vendors with XFX having the best warranty.

If you want to stay green, there isn't anything that is current and comparable to the GTX 275...yet at least. The GTX 260 (216 Stream Processor version) is the next thing that is close to it...should still be able to find those. EVGA, XFX, BFG, Asus, Gainward (UK), MSI, and PNY are known decent companies.

Okay well I'm having some problems with Supreme Commander FA.

The Audio sounds really bad, choppy and incomplete. The game is stuttery almost beyond playable. This is at basically all LOW settings with 500 unit cap per player. I have some Core Maximizer thing from the GPG forums, but once I installed it, it seemed to make things worse.... :cold:

Should I just not be playing SC with my current rig?

ATI/nVidia means nothing to me. I have absolutely no brand loyalty. I'm trying to sort something out with a shop later today, so hopefully I can have the thing up and running by the weekend.

Question for you all. My father's computer's on Vista, and while it's a few months old, it's super-slow. Takes a lot of time to start, a lot of time to open programs, to write CDs, to download... Well, perhaps not *super* slow, but noticeably more so than my own computer, which's on xp, and Oblivion-old.

A chance of Virus is extremely remote : my dad's got avast, and he uses internet rarely, and only to open his mail. I plan on using ccleaner, on making sure useless programs don't start with the computer ; using defraggler, too, suppose it can't hurt. But beyond that, I'm at loss.

So :
1) is that slowness normal ?
2) what else could I do to improve speed ?

Thanks !

Ok, I can get a 1GB XFX 5850 for ?249, a 1GB Sapphire 5830 for ?204, or a 1GB Asus 5770 for ?125, all from Scan. Which one represents the best value? Is the 5850 worth ?45 more than the 5830? And is the 5830 worth ?79 more than the 5770?

Not on a "healthy" install. How many processes are running in Task Manager after a fresh boot? Anything CPU heavy? What are the system specs?

Short of finding all the kludge/processes/cause I'd consider a fresh install. When my installs go wonky, I reinstall, as much as it pains me at times. (Though I have an image I made after the last fresh install I can go back to.)

My opinion is the 5850 is the best bang for the buck and a great card. Especially if your pushing higher resolutions. Many seem to agree at the hardware forums I frequent. Shame the prices are over MSRP and may not drop for a bit. Nvidia didn't blow anyone away with the 4XX series and left ATI vendors in good position to maintain the higher prices.
