They are called Uninterrupted Power Supplies (UPS)

These things are a never-ending cost. The batteries need to be replaced every 6 mo-1 year (unless the tech has improved since the last time I checked them out) and they use lead batteries, so you must properly dispose of them. Almost never is the battery covered by the warranty, so you are always paying for them yourself.

Crap. Any alternatives? I'm worried about my hardware getting damaged. It's plugged into a surge protector power strip.

A power generator/taking it completely off the grid :P

I guess compared to alternatives, UPSs are cheap

If I was running a server, I'd probably use a UPS, but for my computer, I risk it (I figure 2 redundant backups of data, both offline except when doing backups means parts replacement from the rare power-related damage is cheaper than upkeeping a UPS)

-Linux most of the time ( <15 second boot, <10 second shut-down, a modern filesystem designed for data integrity in event of a power failure), boot into Windows when necessary
-Turn off computer at the first sign of an undervoltage/earthquake
-Turn off and unplug the surge protector whenever the computer isn't in use (the best surge protection)

So I'm trying to help my sister upgrade her computer. She runs a small business from home and has just one computer that's around 4 or so years old, recently the level of performance it's been providing has been below standard. I said I might be able to help her with it, either upgrading it or buying a new one. I took the DxDiag while I was there:

It's only an office computer, it just needs to be quick at doing day to day Excel work, E-mail and other general (Non-gaming) use. It's a strange request on this forum, I know. Is there any mileage in just cracking it open and upgrading it? I noticed it was a 775 socket and the 1.5GB of ram probably won't need to be upgraded anyway. The HDD may need changing, it's been making an awful whirring noise for a few weeks. Sometimes it happens for no apparent reason, more frequently during a virus scan or other such activity.

Should she just change computer? Or is it more cost effective to add in some more updated parts, the power supply probably won't be too beefy or well branded. so nothing too juicy.

Cheers guys.

Hah, it's the spoiler, not the quote, that's expandable. I don't post here enough, my bad.

If she thinks that is underperforming, she should come to my work. One Pentium 1.6 GHz PC and a handful of Pentium 2.4 GHz PCs. Single cores all around until recently.

That looks like my work PC, but with .5 GB more RAM. If that is all she is doing on the computer, more than likely any underperformance she is experiencing is due to a bogged down registry, too many startup applications, and in dire need of a good defrag, as well as IE-related death-by-flash pages (IE Flash svcks way worse than Firefox flash on Pentium 4s in my experience). Clean install of Windows and maybe a new HDD if the current one is making sounds, and it should be good for a nice workstation once again. But that is just my opinion coming from a working-at-a-small-business-where-money-is-tight-and-takes-a-computer-exploding-to-get-it-replaced background.

We did recently buy a couple of computers, Compaq AMD Athlon II X2 240 (2.8 GHz) with 3 GB RAM for $360 (including cost of upgrade to Windows 7 Pro) and were quite satisfied with that (switched out one of our 2 GHz Pentiums running on 384 MB RAM for it so there was a massive improvement) unfortunately that deal ended. Found that deal on http://slickdeals.net/

The problem is that the power outages only last for a second, and they are unpredictable. There can be a bit of thunder, like today, and the power went out three times. Or, sometimes there's a lightning storm outside and no power outages at all.

Well, I've performed all the "maintenance" that I can think of, within reason. I've run Ccleaner, Mydefrag, Virus and Spyware scans etc... It's all been to no avail so far. I fear that the HDD is dying a death, the noises it makes are sinister. It's not her warped perception of what she wants in a PC either, it is genuinely slow. I've disabled all of the non neccessary startup items as well.

I think you're probably right, a heavily used Windows XP machine with alot of files on - It could probably do with a fresh install of XP. I might just whack in a new HDD and do what you suggested. Can MS be contacted to replace lost system discs? I can probably provide the key for the disc, from memory I think it's stuck on the top of her PC. I don't think she was provided a disc when she bought it. She used to use a company for all of her ICT needs, they've since parted ways and it seems they didn't deem it neccesary to provide a disc. <_< One way to make sure you always need them...

I've been in the same boat many times. CCleaner, a defrag app, and similar things can't come close to cleaning up as well as a complete format and reinstall can. All that stuff misses stuff that a clean install doesn't.

As for lost system discs: what OEM and model is it (Dell, Sony, HP, etc) is it or did it get built by her old IT guys? If it is an OEM computer, you have to go through them to get new reinstall discs, though many have a program installed on the computer that allows you to create your own system discs. If the old IT guys built it, you can recover the license key that was used on the PC, but you will still need an install disc (and MS will probably not send one to you)

I believe it's a bespoke system, unbranded, built by her old IT guys.

So it looks like I'll have to ring them up, are they legally obliged to provide me with the discs or anything like that? They'll probably offer to come and do the work themselves, charging an extortionate price for a relatively simple task. :banghead: If I seem cynical it's because my faith in IT professionals has been dented recently.

Any OEM XP disk (Pro/Home depending on the key on a home built PC.) can be used to install XP. You simply use the key you have.

I use the last XP disk I got for all my XP installs because it's SP2 not SP1. I've never had an issue. Though this is a home build not OEM. (HP/Dell/ETC.)

OEM's like to give you a recover disk (Not the same as a stand alone OEM copy. It's "proprietary" to their system.) full of the crap they want to install. (Like all those annoying trial links/etc.)

So yeah, if it's a Dell/HP/etc, call them. They should send you another recovery disk.

If it's a home build, borrow an XP disk.

Good luck. :)

Well I'll have absolutely no problem getting my hands on an XP disc. I'm part of the MSDNA through my University, I can get MS OS's for free when I need them (For Personal use). I just didn't want to do that for my sister since it's not legal.

But that's nice to know, cheers, I'll burn one and use her code :).

Cheers DEFRON and Wolfpup.

Simple enough to get the key, in case it isn't printed on the outside:

So I need to really gut out my laptop. Really clean out all the rubbish.

I've been looking at it and it's saying I only have 8GB left on one of the partitions out of 40GB and as far as I can see there's virtually nothing there. Barely any programs etc. However, I've had the laptop a long time so it's probably picked up loads of 'rubbish' files you build up over time.

Is there anything I can download to clean it up? I've used the Windows Disk Cleanup but it's just not doing much. :(

While I'm at it, is there a program that will check the HDD for any problems that may be related to the loud whirring noise it makes?

Emz, you could try Ccleaner, it'll clean up your junk files and remove unnecessary registry files.

Besides Cryptoparrot's suggestion of CCleaner to remove any junk files: http://windirstat.info/ will tell you what directories and what filetypes are taking up the most space, so you can remove the culprits. WinDirStat is one of my favorite little applications

Thanks.

The Ultimate Boot CD has various Hard Drive diagnostic tools on it. The hard drive manufacturer also usually offers some tools on their website.

=/ There's no predicting when a bozo driver will go careening into a telephone pole. And yes, this happens more often that I thought possible.

So, that UPS is crap? Not even enough power to let me shut the PC down? I have an LCD monitor and an energy efficient EarthWatts AMD PSU, if that makes any difference.

What happens if you computer gets shut off suddenly? When the power goes out and my PC turns off it seems fine once I turn it back on, should I be worried?

The power goes off. It's like someone yanked the plug. I lose all my unsaved work. I have to turn the PC back on again manually, and it does so fine. Firefox tries to restore my tabs from my interrupted session.

I'm just worried that all the sudden outages will make Windows have a super brain fart and misplace pieces of itself. Worst case is that the hardware is suffering, too.

That UPS was barely designed to keep up computers, much less a computer and monitor. Like I said: if you got a minute of life added life with that thing, I'd be surprised.

I'm not sure, I copied and pasted the model from Newegg.

I've never upgraded a bios... Can that be done without a processor? I have no way to turn it on untill I have a processor that works with it.
Does the page of Athlon II's work with all the revisions/firmwares? Or better yet, how can I check that out myself? I mean the list of compatible CPU's.
Thanks for your help Níeh?ggr.

Edit: So, do you think the processor is the issue? I had everything plugged in, and when I press the power button, all the LED's would flash, for less than a second, and it would power off, then I unplugged everything other than the Motherboard, Processor, and obviously power supply, and the case's power button, and it did the same thing. My cousin Tray said that it sounded like it was protecting itself, then I told him that the motherboard wasn't compatible with the Phenom II X4 940, and he said that was probably it, because the 955 was a more powerful CPU, and came after it, or something like that.

Sorry to bump my own post, but im on a very limited time frame, can somebody atleast just link me to a quad core that would work http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157176? Also can somebody confirm that the computer would turn itself off if it had an incompatible processor. I know I sound really rude, atleast that's how I would see it, so I'm very sorry.

When I refresh on certain pages I get a pop-up window asking to "Confirm Form Re-Submission" It's only one extra click of the mouse, but it is annoying. Is there anyway to set my browser to auto-confirm so I don't get a shaded out page and pop-up? I use Chrome.

I wouldn't. A virus or malware could use that to steal passwords and logins from you.

My computer overheats a lot. It would overheat so badly that it would shut itself down. However, nowadays, it has gotten much more common, but now, when I try to turn it on, it sounds like the fan is spinning really fast, and a series of high pitched beeping noises begin. While the power button is on, the computer is refusing to turn on. It doesn't even show the startup screens. I have sent this computer to Geeksquad, and later Gateway, which has cost me several hundred dollars. Any potential viruses were removed, and the hard drive was reformatted, but the problem is still there. Should I just buy a new comp?

Chances are yes, although if you describe the series of beeps in more detail, could narrow the problem down.

This has nothing to do with viruses and reformatting the hard disk will have done bugger all. As soon as the computer started to shut down from overheating you should have done something about that rather than letting it happen again and again, chances are it is pretty fried now.
