Okay, now as anyone could see there are HUNDREDS of tech threads floating around in CD - ranging from questions about graphics hardware, to questions about pricier graphics hardware and other tech such as monitors, hard drives and Processors to announcement threads of new technology and more. (I accede - I'm not being very eloquent here

Any questions you have, tech news or ANYTHING related to buying/selling/information/announcements of new hardware should go here.

For example, if you come to the forums to ask "What is the better graphics hardware" or "What sort of RAM should I put in my PC?" then it should go here - I'm a little hazy, I know - but please keep all those graphics card and tech questions to one thread! Please!
So here's the summary, all:
  • Announcements and queries on new or unreleased tech
  • Benchmarks and results of hardware/discussion
  • Questions on what sort of hardware you need/want for your machine
  • Questions about existing tech and/or function
  • Pricing and recommendations
Should be kept to THIS THREAD.

This has been A-okayed by CCNA for all who were wondering - it's up to you to stop filling CD with the same topics again and again that ask what the most powerful card in existence is so you can (not) buy it.

If you feel you have a question or can answer one - please feel free to do so.

Also, this is a great thread for you PC newbs, for learning more about your PC and hardware. http://www.elderscrolls.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=258050&st=0&p=4626051&#entry4626051

Also, a useful site for a frame of reference (not actual numbers), http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html?modelx=33&model1=476&model2=477&chart=174, and http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics.html?modelx=33&model1=519&model2=547&chart=211

Thanks all.
Adding more links shortly, thank you for your patience.

It's a decent system. An alternative is to use Alternate's PC Builder:

Assuming you need nothing else, that's about $980 and will max any game out right now.

New thread coming....

Thanks for the advice. I'm having a little trouble putting your configuration together though. When I pick the parts you suggested I get a warning about a conflict between the graphics card and the PSU, about how the current of the power supply isn't sufficient for the 12 Volt line used by the graphics card (didn't use google translate, since it came up with silly things about the power supply's diet). And for some reason it tells me there aren't any OSs available for my configuration. I assume that I picked a wrong part somewhere, but even after doublechecking I don't see it.

Here's the stuff I got added in right now:

http://www.alternate.nl/html/pcbuilder/productDetail.html?searchClass=pccase&artno=TQXA62&cn=1&tn=BUILDERS&kind=pcbuilder
http://www.alternate.nl/html/pcbuilder/productDetail.html?searchClass=powerSupply&artno=TN6A03&cn=1&tn=BUILDERS&kind=pcbuilder
http://www.alternate.nl/html/pcbuilder/productDetail.html?searchClass=ram&artno=ICIF79&cn=1&tn=BUILDERS&kind=pcbuilder
http://www.alternate.nl/html/pcbuilder/productDetail.html?searchClass=cpu&artno=HD2A51&cn=1&tn=BUILDERS&kind=pcbuilder
http://www.alternate.nl/html/pcbuilder/productDetail.html?searchClass=mainboard&artno=GDEG19&cn=1&tn=BUILDERS&kind=pcbuilder

http://www.alternate.nl/html/pcbuilder/productDetail.html?searchClass=harddiskSATA&artno=A9BW56&cn=1&tn=BUILDERS&kind=pcbuilder
http://www.alternate.nl/html/pcbuilder/productDetail.html?searchClass=dvdr&artno=CEBA25&cn=1&tn=BUILDERS&kind=pcbuilder

I'm not 100% sure all of those are correct, since most of your links, apart from the first one, brought me to the Alternate homepage for some reason.

Well, even if it doesn't work out I think the prebuilt Alternate one I thought about will do. If I can max out Supreme Commander and Sins of a Solar Empire and have both games still run smoothly I'll be extremely pleased already :). Though it would be a little bit of a shame if I could get a better pc from the same site, for the same price.

I have still been trying to hunt down all the drivers for my HP dv6871us laptop but have been failing. I resorted to the HP provided ones for alot of things but I know before I found newer ones. Windows update doesn't show any but I know there is some. Can anyone lend a hand finding them? I know for sure I have the newest nVidia drivers, but the rest I am not sure on, and HP seems to be very general when they give their specifications for the laptop.

So I've decided to just re-install XP and slipstream the AHCI drivers into the installation disc, rather than trying to install them after windows XP has been installed. Can anyone confirm that it may keep the hard drive running 5-10 degrees celsius cooler? I've heard that this is sometimes the case but would like to clarify or gain some other opinions.

Now on my desktop I'm buying a new HDD entirely and have been reccommended the Wester Digital 1TB caviar black. So I looked on Ebuyer and found 2 drives, 1 of them has a 64mb cache and uses Sata III whereas the other only has a 32mb cache and uses Sata II. The Sata III drive costs an extra £4, worth it?

Also, I should just be able to install W7 using the installation disc I currently have, right? The disc doesn't "bind" to the HDD does it? I'm retaining the rest of the components, only my Hard disk is changing.

Well, the SATA III is backwards compatible so for an extra £4 why not? Then if you get a newer system later, you have a SATA III HDD already. (Not the norm yet, but it's coming.)

Correct, it's tied to the mobo.

Today I picked up my new Motorola Droid (the HTC Droid was backordered for 5-6 weeks). And so far I am loving this new smartphone. I must say it is very fast compared to my old Blackberry Pearl. Although I am charging it now and after 25 minutes it says it went from 5% to 70% battery. Most reviews I saw online said it took them about an hour/to 1.5hours to get a 0%-100% charge on it. It should be done charging soon, however should I keep it in longer to make sure I get the most out of the battery?

One of my friends bought an overpriced Dell computer, with an nVidia GTS 240 graphics card. It was a studio XPS or something...

Anyways, he says he can run Crysis at 1920x1080 Very High smoothly- should I beleive him? I can't really find any benchmarks.. Can anyone clear up on this?

If I remember correctly, the GT220 is pretty much a re-branded 9600GT and the GTS250 a re-branded 9800GT. With the GTS240 falling somehow in between these two cards, I'd say that your friend is either lying or doesn't know what smooth means. :P

A lithium battery charges 70% of the capacity in 1/3 the total charge time, if charging from a fully discharged state.

Apologies for the mislinks. I guess they only worked for me. But what you linked there is exactly the config I put together for you. The system I mapped for you is mainly more graphic card heavy. The Radeon 5850 is quite a huge step up from the Radeon 5770. The Intel quad-core processor is still better than the Phenom 555. However, with the motherboard I suggested you have a good chance of unlocking two extra cores that the Phenom 555 has...essentially turning it into a pretty quick quad. MANY have done it and you can google up on others' success and on how to do it.

The prebuilt Alternate is certainly still a worthy PC though. Those two games you speak of have easy-to-meet requirements and either system will max them out and then some. Just wanted to give you an additional option :)

There's always that saying going on about charging the phone too long will wear out the battery's life but I'm not so sure that's entirely true nowadays. I've had a phone with a lithium-ion battery for 3 years now and I charge that thing overnight almost every night and it still works as good as new. Some, if not most, phone chargers are capable to stop charging once the battery is fully charged so perhaps that is what I got. I personally don't see it being detrimental your battery's life by leaving it in charged a bit more.

BTW, good choice getting the droid and not the fruit phone ;)

The GT 240 is a bit more powerful than the 9600GT, but falls short of the 9800GT....at that resolution, he must be making some sacrifices to get Very High. Perhaps no DX10 features? Shadows? Seems a bit hard to believe.

Very High is only available in DX10 mode in Crysis...unless he's using a mod that unlocks it in DX9. (The restriction was mostly a gimmick to get people playing the DX10 version of the game, IIRC. I think the very high settings in Warhead were made available for DX9 users.) Not sure what using a mod like that does to performance, although I imagine it'd drag it down a bit.

Not sure if this is the right thread, but it seems like it might be...

I want to try to sell my old GPUs.

xfx nvidia 7900 GS, with driver CD.
xfx nvidia geforce 8800 GS with 384MB vRAM, with driver CD, box, all manuals and inserts, all cords and cables, including the cute little door hanger that says "keep out, I'm gaming".

Both cards work, and they were put into anti-static bags right after they were removed from the tower.

How much do you think I should ask for each? I know hardware monetary value - especially used! - drops so fast....

Hey, so I know how to build desktop computers, easy. In fact I'm building and getting paid for it right now :) thermal compound is annoying, but anyways. I'm wondering how hard, or different it is to build a laptop, and if it can actually even be done, I have no knowledge in this area. So I looked around on Newegg, looked at "Mobile processors" seen Socket P, looked at the motherboards, they have two! So, I'm assuming http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813153153. Or at least that it would work as one. So, I can put a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819111013, or quad in this thing. Now, on the motherboard, I'm assuming that a "Mini PCI-E" slot, is like a laptop graphics processor? So http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136279 is more than enough for me. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231156 sounds nice.

Overall:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813153153
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819111013
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136279
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231156
So, right now, I have no case, and no way for power. And if I'm right, and the "Mini PCI-E" is a graphics slot, then I would prefer to have a graphics card. Instead of integrated.

So, the absolute Bottom Line, IF I've been right so far, is, where can I get, and what is a good, Case, and Power supply. and graphics chip :D

Thanks in advance, and I'm halfway expecting somebody to see this and think "This kid is so stupid, what he just posted doesn't even make since". But like I said, I really don't know what I'm talking about when it comes to laptops, but IF I am right, then I could save alot of money for my family and I. (My parents are intending to get my sister a laptop for her birthday, but want to spend less than $300, so building one would be much cheaper I hope.)

[snip]

Mini ITX is not a laptop board. It's the kind of board you would use for something like a media box, small and mostly able to be passively cooled. This is why they use laptop processors.

If it was really possible to build your own laptop like you plan, then it would also be far easier to upgrade a laptop. Unfortunately this is not the case.

Right, so my current desktop (that I bought to play Oblivion, good times) is on it's last legs with a whole bunch of problems I won't go into here. Basically, it's time for me to buy a new gaming desktop. I don't have the time or technical aptitude to make one myself so it has to be pre made and my budget is around £1000-£1200, maybe a little more if needed. I've been to Mesh (where I got my last PC) and put this together, any thoughts or comments would be nice:

Desktop PC Power Supply
700W Desktop Power Supply

Motherboard
ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 TurboV ATX Mainboard - AMD 890GX CrossFireX- AM3, DDR3

Processor
AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition Processor - 125W AM3 (3.2-3.6GHz)

Memory
G.Skill 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Memory (4x 2GB KIt)

Graphics Card
1GB ATI Radeon HD5850 Graphics Accelerator

Hard Drive
1TB Serial ATA 2 Hard Drive with 32MB Buffer

Sound Card
7.1 High Definition onboard sound card - for 8 Channel Cinema sound

All that with extras and what-not comes to £1283, and I haven't been able to find it any cheaper. The thing I'm most worried about is the graphics card, is the 5850 going to be good enough to play new games at decent settings for a few years? That being said I can't afford a much better one than that anyway.

I'm pretty sure this is the setup I'm going to be buying in the next couple weeks, but just thought I'd run it by you guys first as you know a lot more than I do! Cheers. :)

AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition Processor - 125W AM3 (3.2-3.6GHz)

All that with extras and what-not comes to £1283, and I haven't been able to find it any cheaper. The thing I'm most worried about is the graphics card, is the 5850 going to be good enough to play new games at decent settings for a few years? That being said I can't afford a much better one than that anyway.

I'm pretty sure this is the setup I'm going to be buying in the next couple weeks, but just thought I'd run it by you guys first as you know a lot more than I do! Cheers. :)

Mesh seems to have a thing for those X6's since they are the only AMD processor they seem to offer on their gaming PC's. Personally I would go the i7 route, remember that GHz isn't the be all and end all when it comes to processors. Going with a 930 could save you a bit.

Hmm, well with a bit of tweaking, I could get the "Intel? Core? i7 930 Quad Core Processor (2.80GHz,8MB Cache) - LGA1336" processeror instead, but that's the cheapest one and actually like £15 more expensive overall.

Too keep from double posting, I just took out everything from this original post...

So, I found the problem I was having, but anyways, I'm now going to double-check, just to make sure.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157176
And previously, I got a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103674, which is not compatible with this board. So, now like I said, just double checking, but http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007671%2050001028%20600005580&IsNodeId=1&name=Athlon%20II%20X4 will work with this motherboard, correct?

Actually building this for somebody I know, he would prefer a Phenom II x4, but I don't want to take another chance with getting it wrong.

That processor should have been compatible with the motherboard. It is possibly a typo in the model number. HDZ955FBGI does not exist HDZ955FDGI exists though and is on the compatible CPU list.

The problem is that the motherboard may need a bios upgrade to work with certain CPU. Check your motherboard's revision and bios version before purchasing a cpu. Or buy a cheap CPU that all revisions/firmwares are compatible with and then flash the bios and get a faster CPU.

Still a bit irritated I haven't been able to hunt down the newest drivers for things and my QuickLaunch buttons are behaving horribly. They worked perfectly fine before with I am pretty sure the same drivers. Anyone able to lend a hand hunting everythign down for my laptop? I do have ones installed from HP, and I know my video card drivers are newest since its an nVidia card, but the QuickLaunch buttons and everythign else are still weird.

I have all of those but I know there has to be newer versions of them all. I don't recall how I hunted it all down before though.

I'm not sure, I copied and pasted the model from Newegg.

I've never upgraded a bios... Can that be done without a processor? I have no way to turn it on untill I have a processor that works with it.
Does the page of Athlon II's work with all the revisions/firmwares? Or better yet, how can I check that out myself? I mean the list of compatible CPU's.
Thanks for your help Níeh?ggr.

Edit: So, do you think the processor is the issue? I had everything plugged in, and when I press the power button, all the LED's would flash, for less than a second, and it would power off, then I unplugged everything other than the Motherboard, Processor, and obviously power supply, and the case's power button, and it did the same thing. My cousin Tray said that it sounded like it was protecting itself, then I told him that the motherboard wasn't compatible with the Phenom II X4 940, and he said that was probably it, because the 955 was a more powerful CPU, and came after it, or something like that.

I have no brain. What's the name of the thing you connect to your computer so that if there is a power outage, your computer won't die suddenly? And what's a good brand/model that isn't wicked expensive? I just need enough power to last me long enough to turn my PC off safely.

They are called Uninterrupted Power Supplies (UPS)

These things are a never-ending cost. The batteries are not cheap need to be replaced every 6 mo-1 year (unless the tech has improved since the last time I checked them out) and they use lead batteries, so you must properly dispose of them. Almost never is the battery covered by the warranty, so you are always paying for them yourself.
