I'm not sure I understand why you aren't able to find drivers for your card:

http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon-win7-64.aspx

That should be the latest drivers for Windows 7 64-bit.

They were the first drivers I tried. They didn't fix the problem.

Jumping back onto this discussion, have you ruled out the possibility of this being a monitor or even a cable problem. I'd try some free fixes first before jumping to get a new video card....unless of course you're trying to give yourself reason to get a new one ;)

Try a different monitor if you got one. Try another HDMI or DVI cable. If the motherboard has two PCI-E x16 slots, try the other one.

I have tried different monitors, I have also moved my card to the other PCI-E slot, and it doesn't help either.

I don't see how it can be a cable, because when I was running XP and had the old drivers, everything was working fine for the most part.

EDIT: Ok, I do want to try putting my video card on a different computer..this time my brother's. I don't know if it is possible, I want to be sure before I try.
The card: ati radeon hd 4870 pci-e 16x 1GB ddr5

I suspect that you may have set the computer to a different refresh rate that is not compatible with your monitor. Do you know how to change this?

I tried changing my refresh rate before, it doesn't really do anything.

How much RAM for a gaming/RAW photo editing laptop? Would the increase in RAM only give negligible speed boosts?

4 GB (2 x 2 GB)
6 GB (1 x 4 GB + 1 x 2 GB)
8 GB (2 x 4 GB)

All DDR3 1066 MHz.

It's gonna be running Windows 7 with a Core i5-560M and GeForce GTX 460M.

IMHO, between 4 and 6 GB is optimal based on price/performance. You want to maintain dual or triple [ganged] channel modes. So for a Core i5 it would be 4GB.

Hey guys - was just about to post a thread when I found this *phew!*

Right. I'm a student at the moment based in the UK and I've been on this awful desktop PC for a few years now. What I really want is a laptop (my room gets so boring, I'd like to sit in the lounge and switch it up a bit) that can play modern day games (MW2, L4D) on default settings pretty much like a console, or as close to that as possible withing my budget.

I have to play MineCraft on the lowest settings to get around 20fps, and I'm sick of it.

After a bit of research, here's what I've concluded (please correct me if I'm wrong):

-RAM, Video RAM and GPU are the most important when it comes to game. Around 2GBish is decent.
-Processor is fairly important, I think?

Is it possible for you guys to 'build' be a PC? Here's the requirements I'd like (using your info needed)

1.) Budget: around the £500 mark.
2.) I'm based inthe UK
3.) I'm shocking with computers, so pre-assembled please.
4.) I'm looking for a laptop, and they've got all things attached.
5.) Here're my preferences:
-Preferrably Toshiba / Samsung
-Preferrably Dual Core, at least 2.0Ghz
-17.3 inch screen
-Integrated Webcam
-As many USB ports as possible
-Keyboard has number pad

I've said my aim up there ^

That's it guys, but like I said: I don't know a lot about computers or gaming, so this laptop might be impossible to get with my budget.

Here's my friend's laptop, and it plays Left 4 Dead 2 perfectly on default settings:
http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/product/Satellite-L650-12K/1086412/toshibaShop/

And finally; will this meet my recquirements?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-Satellite-L670D-10N-notebook-SuperMulti/dp/tech-data/B003LJX74I/ref=de_a_smtd

Thanks SO much in advance guys, I know you'll do a great job! :wavey:

I don't know what the requirements of minecraft are, but both of those have an integrated graphics card, so not good for gaming.

£500 is also a small budget for a gaming laptop, which are often in the $1000 USD range, so you probably can't get anything for less than £620 before VAT that'll be a gaming laptop.

http://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/ is the only gaming PC maker in the UK I know of, and their cheapest 17'' model laptop is £899 after VAT, their cheapest 15.6'' is £779 after VAT

http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/product/Satellite-Pro-L670-11D/1086874/toshibaShop/ is the only Toshiba recommendation I can make, someone else on the forum bought it a while back. If you want to play MW2 on any decent settings, you probably won't be able to get much cheaper than £700

They were the first drivers I tried. They didn't fix the problem.

The computer:

Will it work? Thanks to anyone who helps me.
Well, it's worth a shot. The PC does have a motherboard with a PCI-E x16 slot, so that end is fine. I'm not sure if the case will be big enough to fit the card, but you'll find out soon enough. Then there's the power supply question....if it's the stock PSU that came with the HP, then it's not going to cut it. You could also bring your power supply for the temporary swap and test too....good luck.

:wavey:

Lying in my bed with it now.
The computer is really cool. I've tried all my Steam games and they al run on highest settings except Metro 2033, and Mount ad Blade with too many characters at the same time.
Haven't tried Fallout 3 yet though.

I've installed the huge amount of crap that came pre-installed which made the computer a bit faster. Although Ido reconsider a clean OS install.
So far I cn only complain about the mouse thingey (not the pad, but the click thingey) which is very hard and annoying to press. Also the backpack that came with it is too small for the computer and you have to pull hard to get the top of the bag over the computer, making the edges stick out of the fabric.
It also came with a mouse, pretty standard mouse, but a very nice thing to get since I didn't have a spare one.

Got my new computer up and running still need the soundcard to complete it along with 3 more fans, pushpins, and 3 grills.... Pretty lucky I didn't hit any doa hardware considering most of my parts were purchased over a period of 2 1/2 months.

Right now it is a pain in the ass trying to adapt to Windows 7... I guess I'll wait until tomorrow before I add the other hard drives I have along with my firefox backups which is somewhere...

Unlike most laptops, where after a few hours its certainly hot enough to boil some coffe on, I can say it doesn't.
It stays really quiet and really cold, even when playing demanding games for long periods.

Edit: And I meant to say Uninstalled in my previous post. :P

Connected the rest of my hard drives and restored firefox and thunderbird... Glad I found that program...

Anyway any special place to put game installs or steam and other various Digital download stores for windows 7 as I recall someone saying windows acts like [censored] when you install them in the program file directory.

When I installed WoW on Vista, the installer told me it's best to install to 'Users -> Public' so it doesn't have problems patching.

Can I significanly upgrade my Radeon HD 4850 1024mb for £150? Looking to get a replacement, I think that's more or less what I spent on that card a few years ago.

Better than getting a crappy external if you plan to use it a lot, or care about your data, or ever want to be able to take the drive out of the enclosure. The enclosure is just one option. Depending on what ports you want, there might be better. Do you just need USB? Do you want eSATA? USB 3.0? Firewire?

Oh yea....but I hope your processor is a strong one. The GTX 460 is a nice card, but may be a little above your price range for the 1GB version:
http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=52311&category_id=1216&manufacturer_id=0&tid=ne5x460sf1102

The Radeon 6-series will be dropping with the Radeon 6850 and 6870 in coming weeks too, so may want to wait and see what develops in terms of pricing and performance.

Just USB it seems to be easiest.

eSATA would be better. If you do not have an eSATA port you can get a http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=sata+to+esata+bracket&x=23&y=29.

If that's an insinuation the one I linked was "crappy" there's over 1100 customer reviews of it on http://www.amazon.com/Iomega-Prestige-Desktop-External-34275/dp/B001D7REJ4 (which is selling it for over $90) and it averaged 4/5 stars. That's a pretty decent indication of what to expect. If all he needs it for is basic storage $59.99 is hard to beat.

It had nothing to do with anything you linked. External HDs are just, as a whole, inferior to buying a bare drive and putting it in an enclosure. They usually use cheap drives with poor failure rates, no active cooling which hurts HD lifespan, and they are stuck in enclosures that you can't remove them from without breaking. When you buy a bare drive yourself you can choose what drive you get, how fast it is, how good the quality is, etc. Plus, you get a good enclosure that keeps the drive cool, and as an added bonus, allows for removing the drive. PC cases usually have many HD bays inside, and you can easily just put another HD in there and hook it up through SATA, and then take it out and put it in the enclosure when you need to move it or use it on another computer.
