What I said back then still applies. There is nothing you can do now as any imaging you do will only be able to restore to the current state.

I still highly urge you image your system after doing the reinstall. I image my systems even without upgrades simply because it greatly decreases the time it takes to set the computer up again (don't have to do as much reinstalling and reconfiguring). The advantage for upgraded computers is doubly-so.

Whoops, I forget what I post on different forums somtimes :brokencomputer:

Anyway, I will give this one last shot before I just reformat. I THINK this is a borked driver issue. No matter what game it is, I will crash to a white screen with an error message saying that the driver failed. I've upgraded my drivers, downloaded older drivers, and it still does it. However I think in all my efforts to fix the driver problem, I increased it. I think there is a program that can scan for remnants of old driver installs, but I can't seem to remember it. Anyone know what it is?

I has question(s). Will avast's file shield affect gaming performance? Do certain games access the HDD more often than others or is it only done when the files couldn't be loaded into the RAM?

i5-560M CPU, 4 GB RAM, and a 7200 RPM HDD.

Is there a way I can track the ip or location from where my facebook was accessed from?

My friends think they're pretty funny.

GMail I know has an ability to see the IP of recent connections, but my googling found no such similar feature for Facebook

If it does, you can then set up a direct connection/P2P connection with your friends using any IM that supports it and run netstat -n, which lists the IP of all your current connections. If the IP from the log in matches one of your friends, you know you got the culprit.

Yeah because I'm stupid enough to tell people my password?
Thanks Defron. It was dumb to ask to begin with. Should have just done a google search.

Just got my GTX 460 installed and working, sort of.

I can only get it running through VGA. Neither of the 2 DVI ports or HDMI port work at all, the monitor displaye the classic "No signal recieved". Any ideas? It seems I've covered all my bases, just can't figure out what the problem is.

Thanks for the recommendation anyway Tig, looks like a cool card.

Which driver are you using? For a 460, try 258.96 WHQL or 260.89 WHQL. Check the http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us to find the right one for your OS.

Well, after one year of almost constant use and a move, it seems my secondary drive is failing. There was a not so pleasant grinding noise coming from it when I turned it on tonight. This noise happened once before but after cleaning it out, the noise stopped. I have been putting my computer to sleep a lot recently instead of shutting it down (I do shut it down, just not everytime I'm done using it). Could that have screwed it up? It's my 1tb drive and is only filled with about 250-300gb of music, videos and documents. Don't really have the spare cash for another large hard drive right now, but when I do get one, what will be the best way to go about getting all my stuff transferred over?

By the way, it's the Western Digital 1TB Caviar Black WD1001FALS. I recorded and deleted a lot of gameplay footage, so it probably got a lot more use than a normal drive, but I still think that's not long enough for failure.

Thanks preemptively for the help! This is horribly inconvenient considering I just got some extra money to cover living expenses, and I wanna buy a new hard drive but I know I shouldn't.

Is that done from the BIOS?

And no, I haven't.

Just to confirm (feel free to give an exasperated YES), this http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001U7IPUO/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE will fit and run in a Dimension C521?

Also, what cable do I need? Both monitors have a standard VGA socket, and I have one VGA to VGA cable but I am confused as to what VGA to DVI cable I need as there seems to be different DVI sockets.

Should do yes, You will need a http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-Cable-DVI-I-Single-Hddb15/dp/tech-data/B000FJH9ZA/ref=de_a_smtd or an adaptor like http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cabling4Less-DVI-VGA-HD15-Adaptor/dp/B000FII810/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1288014637&sr=1-1 with the cable you already have.

Is this a new card? For the past several years, they come with one, or two, of the DVI to VGA adapter(s). I probably have a dozen of them floating around here.

Yes, I am going to get exactly the card listed. That is good to know as it may cut the price down a bit. (The last GPU I bought didn't have one included with it, but then again it was quite some time ago).

Ok, many thanks.

In that case I will get the GPU, see what it contains and if it doesn't have the right cables then I will get one of the above.

Just in case anyone was thinking about maybe upgrading their GPU soon:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127500&cm_re=5850-_-14-127-500-_-Product

ATi 5850 for $194.99 after MIR. Definitely a good deal on a pretty good card.

If it wasn't an MSI rebate I'd agree, MSI doesn't have the best (though also not the worst) track record for MIRs. Just google MSI and Rebate and you'll get a bunch of stories about it (waiting 3 months still for one - still "pending")

Yeah, I don't generally ever even bother to factor in MIRs to the price of something with how unreliable they can be, but a 5850 for under $200 warrants a gamble, I think.

If you check the page you linked for the card, they have a deal on 2 adapters with the card for an extra £0.21 .

Review of previous post- cooling suggestions for allowing massive OC on an i7-980X.

New question. I'm thinking about slapping together an HTPC. I have a crap load of old computers laying around (95, 98, 98SE, ME), all mid level hardware from yesteryear.

I know I'll need a new OS, but what would be the minimum hardware requirements to "get by" for a while? I have:
-single core cpus up to 2.8GHz with matching motherboards (5 or 6, I think)
-RAM can be combined from several to give me 4GB+
- AGP video cards up to ATi X1950 Pro
-one mobo with PCIe and some PCIe video (8800GT and up)
-many mid-tower cases
-good fan assortment
-tuner card (requires using the mobo w/ PCIe)
-nice HDD assortment
-several DVD drives

I'd like to build this on the cheap, looking to upgrade later, if needed. It would be nice if I could also set this up as a media server for the network. It will be driving a 28" 1080p monitor.

It's time to clean out my parts closet, and I might as well do something useful with the stuff. Any ideas?

Ok, I mentioned my hard drive was making a grinding noise. It's not right now, so I have no idea what's going on. I downloaded Passmark's DiscCheckup and here are the screenshots of the results.

What do you plan on doing with this thing? Just act as, say, an XBMC-based media server, record TV, record HD TV, playback HD content, playback HD web content, play Blu-rays, etc -- there are a lot of things to consider

For anything recording/HD, even those 2.8 GHz, if they are Pentiums, are going to be utter trash. It may make a nice XBMC/Boxee server, but that would be the extent of it I think.

Two useful guides:

Well, I never heard of XBMC, until I checked your link. The basic use, to start, would be watch/record TV (dual tuner card), and play DVDs, possibly BD. I get my TV from an antenna, so the only HD would be BD, and I don't own any. I think the top cpus I have are AthlonXPs. It would be handy to load all my DVDs into it so I could watch a movie without digging out the disk.

Looks like you'll do good to record with MythTV, playback shouldn't be a problem given that it is all SD. The only question is whether or not your tuner card will work with Linux. Currently there is no way to play BDs on Linux, but it is being worked on, and you don't have any BDs anyway.

Finally, ripping DVDs is still against the DMCA (read: illegal in the US), so your last one can't be done.

MythTV is a godsend, so I have to second using MythTV with your HTPC.
