Okay, now as anyone could see there are HUNDREDS of tech threads floating around in CD - ranging from questions about graphics hardware, to questions about pricier graphics hardware and other tech such as monitors, hard drives and Processors to announcement threads of new technology and more. (I accede - I'm not being very eloquent here

Any questions you have, tech news or ANYTHING related to buying/selling/information/announcements of new hardware should go here.

For example, if you come to the forums to ask "What is the better graphics hardware" or "What sort of RAM should I put in my PC?" then it should go here - I'm a little hazy, I know - but please keep all those graphics card and tech questions to one thread! Please!
So here's the summary, all:
  • Announcements and queries on new or unreleased tech
  • Benchmarks and results of hardware/discussion
  • Questions on what sort of hardware you need/want for your machine
  • Questions about existing tech and/or function
  • Pricing and recommendations
Should be kept to THIS THREAD.

This has been A-okayed by CCNA for all who were wondering - it's up to you to stop filling CD with the same topics again and again that ask what the most powerful card in existence is so you can (not) buy it.

If you feel you have a question or can answer one - please feel free to do so.

Also, this is a great thread for you PC newbs, for learning more about your PC and hardware. http://www.elderscrolls.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=258050&st=0&p=4626051&#entry4626051

Also, a useful site for a frame of reference (not actual numbers), http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html?modelx=33&model1=476&model2=477&chart=174, and http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics.html?modelx=33&model1=519&model2=547&chart=211

Thanks all.
Adding more links shortly, thank you for your patience.

(Threads 1-82 have been all pruned, may they rest in peace)

My gpu makes this high pitched noise just on the top end of my hearing and it's not the fan and it's extremely obnoxious, any idea what it is and how to fix it?

Unfortunately don't know too many sites in the UK that do combo deals like newegg does...the ones that I do know come with one at least one component that kills the deal...so try these:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition
RAM: Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz XMS3
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3 870 Socket AM3
GPU: XFX HD 5850 Black Edition 1GB DDR
PSU: Corsair 550W VX

I get £537.54 inc VAT.

The GTX 460 is a slightly slower and cheaper alternative to the Radeon 5850 if you can't get it:

Are you sure it's not the fan. Have you tried cleaning out dust particles in the fan grill and heatsink with a can of compressed air?

May also want to try different video card drivers....some drivers can be faulty (rare, but possible) to the point that they ramp up the fan speeds.

Also, putting a drop of grease/oil on the fan bearings may help....be careful not to put too much.

Anyone know what to remove when cleaning Xoanr DX drivers with DriverSweeper? After getting tired of its ideosyncracies, I went back to my X-Fi XtremeGamer. However, though I found a folder with remnant drivers for the Xonar DX in the system folder and purged it with DriverSweeper, I don't think it's all the bits.

I just got a new GTX 460 and installed the drivers for it and all that, and double checked online to see that they were the newest available (and they were), but ever since I've upgraded, webpages randomly freeze and crash and my entire computer becomes nonresponsive in a way I've never seen before - even CTRL+ALT+Delete and the start menu fail to work sometimes, and commands seem to be ignored until the problem fixes itself. During when it first happens, all 4 cores on my processor spike and then go back to normal again. Is this a display driver problem? My PC info is in my sig.

Do you guys think that the Coolermaster Silent-Pro 700W would suffice if I get the GTX 460? Im not too much of a computer whizz.

Did you come from an ATI video card. If so, running DriverSweeper is a necessity to get rid of those left-behind files.

Can always try a slightly older driver to see if it is a driver problem.

It'll be fine if that's the power supply you currently have. Otherwise, I'd rather get a 650W Corsair over it any day.

Looking for a flatbed scanner large enough for a sketchpad, and around $50. For some reason, all the scanners I find online are very expensive, yet an all-in-one printer is cheap.

I upgraded from a GTS 250, so, no, no ATI cards.

Maybe I should try DriverSweeper anyways, though?

I would recommend signing up for the Newegg newsletter and watching for deals if you don't need the scanner right away. Through one of their deals I got http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16838110026 for $55.

I have a 450W PSU that came with my tower.

Thanks though.

Okay, so I'm at it again. I've been thinking of upgrading my cpu (3+ yrs old Q6600 quad core left over from my old DELL ) after replacing my MOBO, GPU, PSU, RAM, and case. (Yeah, I've been doing it one piece at a time.)

before I go spending money needlessly I'd like to know which type processor (still looking for quad core) should I realistically be looking at, or should I not bother. Money is not a huge issue although I want to stay at or around $300 (U.S.)

Well, the Q9550 is about the best you can get with your budget:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115041

But if you don't mind overclocking, you can always go that route with your Q6600 to potentially get Q9550 speeds.

I'm all for saving money where I can and I'm not opposed to overclocking, but I won't lie, I've have no clue how to (safely) accomplish this.
Price can go a little higher than that, but I am still recovering from the GPU purchase.
only thing left to replace after that is the monitor, but that will have to wait awhile longer.

Reading around about whining video cards suggest it could also be capacitor whine... Usually when folding.

Coil/capacitor squeal possibly (its very common). If it is there isn't much that can be done about it. It will vary depending on what kind of stress you're putting on your card from various games or activities.

It could be the HD sound drivers that Nvidia includes in their driver package now for GTX 400 series cards. I've read that they can conflict with your sound card or onboard sound and cause performance issues such as you've described. You might want to look over this post from the EVGA forums, it gives information on how to get rid of them (if you're not using them). Hopefully in the next driver release Nvidia will give the option to install them or not.

I need help selecting a new graphics card. Not because I want to upgrade to a more powerful one, but because my old one is very wierd.

When I first got my PC the screen was flickering, until I tried a bunch of older drivers until I finally found one that worked. Even then, I couldn't watch DVDs with the screen messing up, and it seems I would get a lot of screen tearing while playing games.

Well, now upgraded to Windows 7, and I can't find any drivers that work with my card now, so I am forced to buy a new one.

I wouldn't necessarily mind buying a more powerful card, but I do not want a weaker one. My budget is about $250 USD. My current graphics card is ati radeon hd 4870 pci-e 16x 1GB ddr5.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, thanks.

If your card is still under warranty, have the manufacturer replace it. I find your issue to be rather strange to push you far enough to buy a new card. For your price range, it's either the 1GB GeForce GTX 460 or the 1GB Radeon 5850.

Radeon 6-series coming soon too, so may want to wait a bit. Rumours have it some time this month, but we'll see

I've had the card for too long for it to be under warranty. I can't even play games with how glitchy the screen is now, it svcks, but it's true.

For those cards you listed, in terms of power, are they much more than the one I currently have? Or are they about the same? Because even though I have $250, I would rather spend less than that, more like $150-200 (if possible).

If you can run a Radoen 4870, I don't see the cards I listed to be a problem. If you want a lower cost card, the GTX 460 is the choice then. Otherwise, you get into the Radeon 5830 realm, which consumes more power than it should for the caliber card it is. The Radeon 5770 is about on par with the Radeon 4890, so it's a bit better than your card but you'd be better off with the GTX 460.

I'm not sure I understand why you aren't able to find drivers for your card:

http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon-win7-64.aspx

That should be the latest drivers for Windows 7 64-bit.

Jumping back onto this discussion, have you ruled out the possibility of this being a monitor or even a cable problem. I'd try some free fixes first before jumping to get a new video card....unless of course you're trying to give yourself reason to get a new one ;)

Try a different monitor if you got one. Try another HDMI or DVI cable. If the motherboard has two PCI-E x16 slots, try the other one.
