Okay, now as anyone could see there are HUNDREDS of tech threads floating around in CD - ranging from questions about graphics hardware, to questions about pricier graphics hardware and other tech such as monitors, hard drives and Processors to announcement threads of new technology and more. (I accede - I'm not being very eloquent here

Any questions you have, tech news or ANYTHING related to buying/selling/information/announcements of new hardware should go here.

For example, if you come to the forums to ask "What is the better graphics hardware" or "What sort of RAM should I put in my PC?" then it should go here - I'm a little hazy, I know - but please keep all those graphics card and tech questions to one thread! Please!
So here's the summary, all:
  • Announcements and queries on new or unreleased tech
  • Benchmarks and results of hardware/discussion
  • Questions on what sort of hardware you need/want for your machine
  • Questions about existing tech and/or function
  • Pricing and recommendations

Should be kept to THIS THREAD.

This has been A-okayed by CCNA for all who were wondering - it's up to you to stop filling CD with the same topics again and again that ask what the most powerful card in existence is so you can (not) buy it.

If you feel you have a question or can answer one - please feel free to do so.

Also, this is a great thread for you PC newbs, for learning more about your PC and hardware. http://www.elderscrolls.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=258050&st=0&p=4626051&#entry4626051

Also, a useful site for a frame of reference (not actual numbers), http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html?modelx=33&model1=476&model2=477&chart=174, and http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics.html?modelx=33&model1=519&model2=547&chart=211

Thanks all.
Adding more links shortly, thank you for your patience.

(Threads 1-82 have been all pruned, may they rest in peace)

So speccy is reporting my RAM at 498MHz, CPU-Z at 665.2MHz. I'd assume it was synchronizing with the FSB, and thus not running at 1333MHz, but my CPU has no FSB. Synchronizing with the DMI? Can it be overclocked? Should it have to be? I'd just like my RAM to be running at 1333MHz. Although either speccy of CPU-Z is obviously reporting it wrong, so maybe they both are.

You have to use a multiplier that allows for the native speed. I for example have to run my FSB at 200x21 (4.2GHz) to get my RAM to run it's rated 1600MHz (200x4 double pumped.) with a 4x mutli on the RAM. I could do 185x23 for 4.2GHz but then my RAM either under, or over clocks depending which multi I use. I can't set it to 1600 if the FSB doesn't allow for it.

I bought a pair of Microsoft Lifechat headphones the other day to replace a broken pair of Creatives, not realising it had a usb connection instead of audio jack. Skype works fine on them, but stuff like itunes still plays through speakers - if I change the device on audio mixer (windows 7 by the way) to headphones instead of speakers, it just lists skype. How do I get the headphones to play all my audio?

Edit: Nevermind, think I solved it

Hey guys, I have a couple questions:

1. Is upgrading from a 9400 GT (512mb) to a GTS 450 (1gb) worth the pricetag of $120? I don't make a lot of money ( $80-$160 a week ) but that will change soon, and I'm saving for a car ( something to keep in mind ). Just try to factor that in, also how much better will performance be? and what is the difference between all of them? http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=nvidia+gts+450&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=7158948939&ref=pd_sl_5fzng5aqpe_b http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=gts+450&x=0&y=0 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/search.asp?page=3&keywords=fermi%20gts%20450&sort=Weight&dir=desc Which one do you suggest?
Or, can someone recommend an equal or better card for less money? If it was up to me, I'd spend under $100, and it would be my wildest dream for it to cost under $80.

2. What exactly is a quad core? Does an "Intel Core i5-2300 CPU @ 2.80 GHz ( 4 CPUs ), ~2.8GHz" run four 2.80 GHz CPUs at once, effectively making it 11.2 GHz? Or is it 2.8 GHz of processing chopped up into four CPUs? Went and bought a computer from Best Buy ( sorry, it wasn't exactly my choice since it wasn't my money ) and ended up walking out with a computer with that processor.

Thanks guys. :)

I have a problem. Ok so a couple times a week my PC just crashes, and won't detect the boot drive when it restarts. Shutting off the PC and turning it back on makes it boot back up.

Now yesterday when it happened I managed to catch the BSOD error which was "KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR". I can rule out my motherboard, CPU, and memory since this has been happening since before I upgraded.

What does this error mean and what can I do to fix it?

Yes, but I don't HAVE an FSB, so I don't exactly know where to start with this. Maybe I should ask on overclock.net.

1) I would try save up at least 150-200USD before buying a graphics card upgrade. However, the GTS 450 is sufficient. I'd get that or a Radeon 5770 1GB for around 120USD.

2) Each core has a clock speed of 2.8GHz. It is not equivalent to a 11.2GHz single core, it doesn't work that way. No applications are 100% efficient for multiple cores, plus the interconnect and operating system will limit use of those cores. It is faster than a 2.8GHz single core, yes... but you cannot simply quantify its performance in a gigahertz fiqure.

That, plus clock speed is a terrible way to judge a CPU's performance. It's pretty much meaningless unless comparing otherwise identical CPUs.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. I've decided to just take the leap anyway and am going to buy this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=14-187-120&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&Pagesize=10&PurchaseMark=&SelectedRating=3&VideoOnlyMark=False&VendorMark=&IsFeedbackTab=true&Keywords=%28keywords%29#scrollFullInfo - it's the cheapest one :P - and this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817339025&cm_re=600_watt_psu-_-17-339-025-_-Product, since my current one is only 450 watts. :(

For a grand total of 155 bucks, it doesn't seem like a bad deal at all.

Not familar with that brand of power supply. It does seem to have the recommend current on +12v (more than 22A).

FSB, BCLK (or base clock) depending on the mobo. You have to have one. It's how the (all) CPU(s) works.

It could use a lot of upgrading, depending on what you want to do with it. Unfortunate that you have a slimline. It restricts what you can fit in it, and I think they have power supplies as low as 160W, and don't take regular ATX power supplies, which restricts the graphics card you can put in it without upgrading the PSU, and even the PSU upgrade options probably aren't great. The CPU is pretty outdated as well.

EDIT: And definitely make sure your PSU can handle it before buying any graphics card.

Alright I'm about to nuke a family laptop with DBAN, I've got both the Vista32 bit and DBAN disk ready. The drivers are here but I was wanting to know what specifically I should do. There are a crap-load of drivers on there, I stupidly just thought that there'd be a pack full of all the downloads I'd need on it. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey guys I recently purchased the http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Z-2300-THX-Certified-Speaker-Subwoofer/dp/B0002SQ2P2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295821807&sr=8-1. After playing the set too loud for an extended period of time, the left satellite simply quit working. My roommate and I were hoping to buy a new set of even better satellites to replace the old ones and we were looking at the http://www.amazon.com/M-Audio-Studiophile-AV-Powered-Speakers/dp/B000MUXJCO/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1295821943&sr=1-1. We were hoping to simply buy some RCA cables and hook the AV 40s up to the back of the Z-2300 woofer. The only issue is that the AV40s and the woofer are separately powered. In fact, when the Z-2300 satellites were working the woofer was what supplied them power via the RCA hook up. So we're afraid something might go terribly wrong if we were to simply run the RCA cables from the woofer to the AV 40s. Should we actually be scared or would everything work out fine? Are there smarter ways of hooking up the woofer and the AV 40s without degrading sound quality (we've already thought of headphone splitters)? Or are there a better pair of satellites/bookshelf speakers that aren't powered that we could hook up? I would really appreciate some help with this issue, I'm pretty stumped right now, and I have little experience with this sort of thing. Thanks in advance for any assistance/advice.

In a month or so when I buy a new mobo ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131647&cm_re=ASUS_M4A87TD_EVO-_-13-131-647-_-Product - Good? ) and CPU ( Phenom II x6 1090T most likey ), I'll probably buy a new set of speakers as well. However, I am not really knowledgeable on quality audio specs and the like. So, I was wondering if someone could recommend a decent, cheap speaker set for my needs. I watch quite a bit of anime, game (sometimes), and listen to music. From that , I guess that I just need something that sounds clear and not distorted with quite a bit of volume. Would like to keep as far under $40-50 if possible.

Thank you in advance. ^_^

I have found out that my motherboard may not support the GFX card I was gonna buy. When I looked up my motherboard (Gigabyte GA-EP35C-DS3R) it said I had 3 PCI slots, 3 PCI Express x1 slots and 1 PCI Express x16 slot. Now I have no idea what that means but someone told me that the card I want (Radeon HD 6950) only supports PCI Express 2.0 and I was wondering what would happen if I put the card in anyway. Waste of money perhaps?

PCi-e 2.0 is fully compatable with a 1.0 slot (what you have). you won't get ALL of the cards performance due to the slower slot, but you really wouldn't know it. I know this for a fact because I had the same thought when I wanted to upgrade my old ATI x1300 to an 8800GT

So in that regard, no its is not a waste of money. However the real determining factor is the rest of your system. The video card may be too powerful causing bottlenecks in your RAM and CPU. Yes, that is possible.

You'd do better with this better quality power supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371035&cm_re=antec_earthwatt-_-17-371-035-_-Product ....$50 as of this post. HEC is not really a good PSU manufacturer.

The Radeon 5450 is not that great of an upgrade from the Radeon 3450 that you have. The Radeon 5570 low profile is more worth looking into and is also a very low power requirement card.

Those M-Audio's don't need a separate subwoofer from my understanding as the bass on those are already very good. But you should be fine if that's what you want to do....there have been others that have done the same:

Mobo is a good basic board. Any one of these speakers sets will do:

I have found out that my motherboard may not support the GFX card I was gonna buy. When I looked up my motherboard (Gigabyte GA-EP35C-DS3R) it said I had 3 PCI slots, 3 PCI Express x1 slots and 1 PCI Express x16 slot. Now I have no idea what that means but someone told me that the card I want (Radeon HD 6950) only supports PCI Express 2.0 and I was wondering what would happen if I put the card in anyway. Waste of money perhaps?

It'll work just fine. PCI-E 2.0 is backwards compatible with older PCi-E x16 slots. I had the Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R (rev 0) board and my current Radeon 6950 and it worked perfectly fine. Got a Sandybridge setup now. If you're concerned about the bandwidth bottleneck, the difference is rather negligible...maybe 1-2%.

Ah, okay. If anything else I could... Not do that no. Crap. I just remembered that I have an OEM version of Windows 7 and if I change the motherboard (I've been told) then Windows won't work

Edit: And want the blazes is a "Sandybridge" if I may ask?

You can transfer an OEM copy, you just have to call MS and give them the number Windows will give you on authentication. The automated service will issue a new block of 9 sets of numbers you put in. Once it validates once with the new build you'll never have to do it again for that rig.

Sandybridge is the name for Intel's second generation of 32nm processors that came out early this month. i5 2500k and i7 2600k among others.

My girlfriend is looking for a 14" screen on a laptop and I was searching various places including ebay and found http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220716826762&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT.

She wants one that is new not re-certified/refurbished. Is the aforementioned laptop a good deal? Is there a better one somewhere that somebody could find?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

So I completed the application I was writing to modify the start values of Windows services for purposes of optimizing the system. Now the issue I have is supplying configuration files for it. The way I have it setup it reads values from XML files that have a very simple structure. I was thinking of by default including a few default configurations, but then as far as others they would be limited. I really canonly provide ones that I would personally use so I was hoping to gather a few from other people.

Basically you run the program and it will modify the registry to set the startup type of all specified services. Right now the lists have to be created by hand but I am going to work it out to being able to saved tweaked lists and remove items for ease of creation.

I figure this topic would be a good place to ask for people to test the applicaton and to help out with some configurations. I wouldn't even say the software is beta but it does appear to work on my Win7 Pro x86 system just fine with a short list of items.

I want to only send out a few copies of it until I am positive it works as intended, but as far as configurations those are easy enough to test.
Would anyone be interested in contributing to this project?
