...

I've not tried either, so I don't know how well #1 works or how good the software for #2 is

I've had my PS3 connected via wired Ad-Hoc, works well enough, but now i need to have two devices connected to the internet via the same system.

Anyway, the program's intall stalled, and caused my system to BSOD everytime i connected to the internet  Had to use system restore to undo that. I'll try with those commands tomorrow.

I have an Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 965 Presler, but I was wondering if it was getting a little old. I've read that even though it is 3.73 GHz it is not considered a gaming CPU and is not as good as others. But how do I tell what is and is not a gaming CPU?
If it is time for a replacement I was looking at the Intel Core i7-930 or the Intel Core i7-950. Is there any problem with them, or does anyone have any suggestions?

- Pentium chips svck, plain and simple. They overheat incredibly easily and just have all sorts of issues. May they forever burn in the firey pits of my hatred.

- Your current chip is a 65 nm LGA 775 socket type. If you want to go to the new i core chips, you'll have to upgrade your motherboard

- If you upgrade your motherboard, there is a good chance you'll need to get a new copy of Windows 7. If you bought your PC pre-built then it has an OEM license that is tied to that specific manufacturer's BIOS. You cannot use it with any other motherboard other than theirs. If you installed it yourself and went the cheaper way of using an OEM install disc, you'll have to call up MS and hope they are kind enough to let you transfer your license (they aren't always so kind)

You really don't have much in the area of easily available upgrades with your current motherboard (unless it also supports 45 nm chips, if it's an older motherboard, though, it'll only support 65 nm). Also, if you are going to upgrade, you won't want to go with those overpriced chips, as Sandy Bridge is better and isn't a dead socket type like the 1366 is.

As one who somewhat recently got an I7 950, I'd recommend you look at the Sandy Bridge line. The I7 socket 1333 is now on it's way out.

Not that it's a bad line, it's just limited in upgrades. (I see no reason to go any higher that an OC'd 950 personally.)

I love my 950 at 4.2GHz. It screams through games. The SB line can hit 4.8-5.0+GHz on air! (Not all of course, but many have.) They also do very well in games but leave a better upgrade path.

Either way, you'll have a great rig. (Even with an I7 920 OC'd!)

K series processors are unlocked (turbo multipler), similar to AMD "Black Edition" processors, whereas the FSB multipler was unlocked. Also the GPU subsystem is a slightly upgraded revision on the 2500K.

I hate to repost, but I would really like a second opinion.

I'm almost hoping it's the video card because I was planning an upgrade anyway :P
If I replaced it with a GTX460, would my processor (E8400, 3Ghz Core 2 Duo) lag very far behind? And can I even install it on my P5N32-E motherboard?
I might also take the opportunity to install Win7 64bit. Would that be a problem with those components?

The E8400 has been a phenomenal dual-core CPU to this day and if there's any bottleneck with the GTX 460, it probably will be marginal and unnoticeable to you. Really depends on the games you play, but the combination should be fine. And the E8400 overclocks very well too if you become interested to get more performance out of it.

GTX 460 will be fine with your board. If you're concerned of the PCI-E version, they're backwards and forwards compatible.

Components will be no issue for Win 7.

Just wondering what you guys though of Corsair's SP2500 speakers?

They seem pretty good, although they simple look, and with 230W (232 I think actually) it should be pretty powerful. I found those at 180-190 euros so it's about 30-40 euros more expensive the either the Z623 or the Soundsticks III, which I was talking about earlier. So what do you think ? :)

Not that they aren't good speakers, I just find them vastly overpriced for what they are. I myself got a new set of 2.1 speakers today....Klipsch ProMedia 2.1...they sound excellent. Being that you're in Europe though, I'm not so sure you can find them but I do highly recommend them....even more so than the Z623 and SoundSticks.

I've been thinking about a new PC, but before I make the purchase I wanna throw it out here and see if I can get any suggestions to lower price, or get better hardware etc.

Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129100 - I want a full tower
Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130582
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115074
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231311
GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102909
HD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136795
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139009

Then I just have a DVD rom drive by Asus, I don't burn anything so all I need is the ROM for games. If you think you can make this cheaper, then throw some suggestions at me cause the cheaper the better. Or if you think something can give better performance at a not much higher price. I won't be OCing anything, which is why I opted for the 2400 over the 2500 i5. I rather not have to get a separate CPU cooler if it's not necessary. The easier this build is, to build..the better..I'm no tech savant.

The grand total with Win7 brings this rig up to $1,130 or so with shipping.

Are you sure you don't want the Core i5 2500K? As an owner, it is the best CPU I have ever used and the easiest one to OC. Yes, you do need a third party cooler for better results, but the CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ can often be had around or under $30. Well up to you, the Core i5 2400 is still quite powerful.

You can save quite a bit by going with a lower wattage PSU. That system would be fine on a quality 500W PSU really. Either of these would be MORE than enough:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371021&Tpk=antec%20650w%20truepower
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139020&cm_re=corsair_power_supply-_-17-139-020-_-Product...excellent with Seasonic internals
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207002&cm_re=xfx_650w-_-17-207-002-_-Product...modular and excellent with Seasonic internals.

The Samsung F3 drives perform just as well, even better in some cases, as the Caviar Blacks. For $5 less (with promo code), you can get double your capacity:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185&Tpk=samsung%20f3%201tb

Make sure to use that promo code for the RAM....that's a great deal.

Save an extra $10 by combo deals:

As already mentioned, unlocked multi and slightly better onboard GPU. The unlocked Multi allows for much higher overclocks. The plain i5 2500 can actually still be overclocked, but there are limitations and I believe the most I've seen a user manage is 4.0GHz whereas I've seen users take the 2500K up to 5.3GHz. My chip is at 4.6GHz currently and it's plenty fast.

That board is good. MSI has stepped up their game for the P67 chipset boards.

Thank you. I figured upgrading my windows installation wouldn't be a problem but the '32' in the motherboard name compelled me to ask just in case :)

This is what my googling brings up:

http://tameyourpc.blogspot.com/2009/07/windows-7-as-wireless-access-point.html

Partial success, i have the Access Point up, the consoles can connect to it and i can ping them with my PC, but both fail to get internet connection due to DNS errors (WII 52131, PS3 80710102).

I dropped down to the Corsair 650w. I just like to have more than I need, but 650 will be fine. The F3 is sold out, did use the promo code for the RAM and thanks about the combo deal, didn't know about that. Oh and since I don't plan on overclocking at all, I'm gonna go with the cheaper 2400. That was the main point, if I had to add a cooler in there it'd be almost $60 more and I wanna go cheap-good as possible.

Yeah I already knew about the Pro Media 2.1. Lots of people say they're the best 2.1 speakers ever (atleast in that price segment) but I also saw some saying they're a bit unreliable and sicne their an old model they tend to diss them due ot that as well

Ok, this has me completely stumped... My GPU is SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X HD 4870 (a buffed-up ATI Radeon HD 4870) and ever since I've updated my drivers to 11.3 Catalyst Control Center has been looking like http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/1055/noaa.png. No, it's not that the bad cropping makes the window look like crap, it's that there's no anti-aliasing setting!!! Neither in the settings tree to the left nor under "All Settings" in the place where it's supposed to be. I've tried reverting to 11.2, I've tried using Driver Sweeper to remove any traces from previously installed drivers (both files and registry entries), I've googled for hours... to no avail. Anti-aliasing itself seems to be working in games, but this is driving me crazy - I should be able to change AA settings within CCC. Please, someone help me...

If it'll in any way help, here's my dxdiag:

Did you download the package with CCC2 included?

If all else fails, try downloading the driver from here: (when 11.3 becomes available)
http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/downloads/download_index_01.aspx?psn=0006

My cousin has a Sapphire card and for some reason only the drivers on their site work properly.

I will try, but I've had this computer for over a year (close to two years if I correctly remember when I bought+assembled it) and all this time it was working perfectly, up until recently when the drivers updated to 10.3. Well, actually, when Steam updated them, the blasted thing... I thought the problem might be caused precisely because it was Steam's installation and not manual, but it obviously isn't because I've manually uninstalled the drivers, cleaned up all files and registry entries that remained from that installation, installed manually and the issue persists. It makes no sense. I have absolutely no idea what might have caused this sudden surge of nonsense. And to make it worse I'm not even 100% sure that the problem is causally linked to the update to 10.3 at all, because I don't open CCC that often and I've only noticed the problem not long after the update - it might have happened before or after and have been totally unlinked to the update.

Is this on Windows XP or Vista/7?

They updated the CCC a while ago; it doesn't look like that anymore, now it looks http://i.imgur.com/8AkXJ.jpg.

It's Windows XP Professional x64 Edition (that's what it says in dxdiag I've provided :D ). CCC on XP apparently still looks that way.

Ah. Well you could try a downgrade and see if that fixes it, or try the Sapphire drivers. I have heard before that 64-bit XP driver support is a bit shoddy.

That's all I got, sorry.

Did you scroll down on that SS page? AA is the http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/jasonsteele/Comp%20related/AAinCCC.jpg on my 5870 with 11.3 using the new CCC. I've never had an issue like this.

No problem, I appreciate that you're trying to help, but more importantly... the issue is fixed, and even more importantly... I have absolutely no idea how or why. As you've suggested, I've tried installing SAPPHIRE's drivers instead of AMD's (after first, again, uninstalling the current ones and cleaning up files and registry entries), but that did nothing - there was still no AA setting in the CCC. But I noticed that this time I got a weird error when I was logging in (something about Windows not being able to load the profile properly), so I decided to run CHKDSK to make sure that something didn't get seriously [censored] up, just in case. After CHKDSK was done it said it didn't fix anything, absolutely no errors encountered at all, yet when Windows booted up this time, the AA setting was again where it's supposed to be in CCC...

That can't make sense, can it?

No no no, slap me three times and call me Rolf Blegenstein Bausgebergner the Third, that can't make sense.

Had you rebooted previously when editing the registry? Big changes made in the registry usually don't take effect until after a reboot.

Good to hear it's fixed.

Of course, every time. I'd uninstall the drivers, clean up files and registry, reboot, install new drivers, reboot again. Rinsed and repeated for at least 5 times trying different driver versions and things.

Yeah I already knew about the Pro Media 2.1. Lots of people say they're the best 2.1 speakers ever (atleast in that price segment) but I also saw some saying they're a bit unreliable and sicne their an old model they tend to diss them due ot that as well

To me, age of model doesn't really matter when talking about speakers. Their performance is measured in sound quality, which is much less affected/more slowly affected by new technology than, say, CPU's. If a set from ten years ago sound really good, they'll still be better than cheapo modern ones.

Its not like you can get a FPS boost or drop from your speakers :P.

Anyone have any idea what happened to my http://i.imgur.com/kFKNR.png? I opened it one day to see that sizing issue but there is no handles to resize it anywhere. Just seems to have randomly happened one day and I don't know what caused it.

True. As you said technologies related to speakers don't evolve that fast but usually speakers that costed 200 bucks 10 years ago vs speakers that cost 200 bucks nowadays are inferior

I've got two questions, both on behalf of my elderly mother. After my dad died, she got into computers (I taught her some of the basics, then she started taking classes. But she still comes to me with her problems, and USUALLY I can help her. But she had two problems this week that have me stumped.

1. She has a Toshiba laptop running Vista hooked up to a Canon Pixma IP 3300 printer, which no longer prints. One printer cartridge was recently replaced, and the printer has stopped printing completely. Note that when you tell it to print, it spits out blank pages. There are no error messages. I tried printing a test page, and the test page printed blank. I reinstalled the printer drivers, but that didn't affect it. Any ideas? The printer is pretty old, but up until yesterday, it was working fine (and she prints a lot).

2. Also, she has a not-so-old iMac computer. Before encountering the problem on the Toshiba with printing, she had first tried to print the same thing on her mac. But she needed new ink (she was confused -- she didn't realize that the two different printers she has used different types of ink cartridges, so when I bought her ink for one, she thought she wouldn't need ink for the other. She's old...). Anyway, the problem is that she ran out of Magenta ink, and I ordered some for her, but in the mean time, I told her that she could simply print in black and white. On a PC it was easy to do. However, I CANNOT FIND ANYWHERE the standard printer options to change things like that. Where the heck did Apple hide those printer options? She's trying to print out of Safari, but that is irrelevant because I can't find the black and white/greyscale print options anywhere. The printer options list almost no actual printer options. I am a little familiar with Macs, but VERY little, so feel free to treat me like a dumb newb, if you wish. (about 15 years ago or so, I actually had to support them as the PC administrator for a company, but after that experience, I never wanted to see another Mac or Mac user again. Now my mom's using one.... Damn!
