Can anyone tell me what a good partition management program is? I have two partitions: the C drive where Windows is installed, and where I install everything, and my D drive where all my large files go that I keep as backup. I want to move a few GB from the D drive to the C drive, but Windows 7 won't let me expand the OS partition....

http://www.partedmagic.com is quite good.

Does this work on Windows? I see a lot of Linux jargon that I don't really understand....

Yep. It's a bootable CD (you can't alter partition tables while the drive is mounted) and works fine with Windows.

There is http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ which also works with Windows partitions.

Alrighty, I got all my computer parts in yesterday which include a Pehnom II 955 processor with the stock cooling. But I have a 6000+ AM2 socket CPU that I bought OEM with an Artic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro. Could I take that off my old PC and replace it with the stock cooler from my Phenom? Would that keep it cooler than the stock cooling?

Hey guys

I'm building my dad a new computer, since his old one has finally bit the dust (still had a single core processor)

This is what I have so far:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119068
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103846
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139008
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231193
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136319
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236063

I'm not really sure where to go with the mobo. Doesn't need to be anything fancy with SLI or crossfire or anything. I would think that on-board graphics would be enough. He doesn't really play any graphically intense games. (The most he plays is online poker and puzzle games like Bejeweled)

edit: I already have a DVD burner to use, so no need to buy a new one.

How does this build look? I'm trying to keep it as cheap as possible, but still get good performance.

Should work. Many owners have used that cooler even with the newer AMD chips. Should work better than the stock one too.

Build looks fine so far. Either of these boards will do:

And the stock cooling from the 955 could be put on the 6000+?

Sure; Socket AM2/AM2+/AM3 coolers are interchangeable. Just watch clearance around big coolers like the Freezer 64 Pro.

Here's another nice cheap case, and it's free shipping currently (saves a lot of money on cases): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119161

This CPU is a step down, but a better price: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103681

Another choice of RAM: on sale and free shipping: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148150

And another motherboard for your consideration; the 790GX is older but superior to the 785-chipset boards: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128398

Everything else looks good.

Is there a way to shrink the Windows partition then? I could make a third partition for all my installed games and stuff.

It's just a warning, not a guarantee of failure. I have re-sized, (Gparted for XP, and W7's built in utility.) both to increasing and decreasing the size of the Windows partition with no issues.

I doubt you will have an issue, but it is possible.

Shrinking isn't an issue.

Yeah, I've done it with XP, but not Windows Visa/7. It isn't terribly common, but is a possibility (just make sure you have your repair disc handy).

edit: It looks like that case I just linked has vertically mounted DVD drives. I'll look for another.

Everything else looks good.

Thanks Tig and Dogsbody. Those other choices helped bring the cost down quite a bit, since I am trying to keep this as cheap as possible.

Would getting a case with a pre-mounted PSU be a good choice?

Something like: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147001, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147099, or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147010

No; those are crap PSUs. Rosewill (which is Newegg's house brand) is very unpredictable and sells a lot of the very worst Chinese mock power supplies on the market.

This is a good case with a bundled PSU that is good for small systems: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129071. It was on sale and free shipping a few days ago :(

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but the item you are looking for has been deactivated. Here are some similar products that you may wish to consider:"

I'll just go with the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119161 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139008 I had before.

Thanks for all the help.

I already had an issue with repartitioning, but that was before my initial question in this thread. I'm glad I paid attention to the guys in this thread enough to know to reset my MBR in the Windows setup.

I think I'll just shrink the main partition and reinstall everything on a third partition, to avoid more headaches.

just a quick question, but when i overclock my front side bus, does that use more of my power supply? or does it use the same amount?

Overclocking increases power consumption, even if you do not increase voltage. Power consumed in CMOS devices, which is pretty much every chip in your computer, goes as CV2f (where V is the supply voltage, f is the frequency at which gates are being switched, and C is the capacitance of the gates).

Since both memory and CPU clocks are derived from the FSB clock, overclocking the FSB affects CPU, Northbridge, and memory power consumption.

So my mum is looking to get a netbook. I haven't really kept much of an eye on hardware in.. oh.. a long time; is there anything specific to either look for or look out for? Known lemons and the like...

ahh, thank you Dogsbody. i knew overclocking my FSB also affected my CPU (main reason i did it). and now i know i need a better power supply :)

also, if my power supply is weak, could it possibly bottle-neck my computer's parts? such as my graphics card? (not giving it enough power to use the full GPU?) i've heard of other people using the same card i have (AGP also) and running games, like Fallout 3, at max settings.. which i cant do.

How exactly do I overclock my CPU? I have an AMD Phenom II x4 925 running at 2.8ghz, I've looked it up and I can overclock it to 3.5-4.0ghz. What steps do I need to take?

I bought a new monitor, ASUS VW246H, about two months ago to use for my PC and 360. Today, it started turning off randomly, though it could be from vibrations from people walking or hitting the desk. It sometimes turns itself back on, but sometimes I have to nudge it a little. Does anyone know what the problem is?

Not sure if it matters, but the power went out the other day.

Have you tried using a different power cable? All monitors use the same standard power plug so you should be able to find one lying around to test.
