The 16 Confirmed Skills

Go to 4:11, you can see that the skills are....

Magic: alchemy, illusion, conjuration, destruction, restoration, alteration, enchanting.

Combat: smithing, heavy armor, block, two-handed, one-handed, archery, light armor.

It's seven skills in each, not six. We just can't see the stealth skills. Apparently both archery and light armor are now in the combat category, and alchemy is still in the magic tree.

No, 6 skills each and Alchemy and light armour are in Stealth

1st post on these forums ... im gonna have to say archery, (as being a good archer in the real world requires stealth) and agility (being sneaky takes a great amount of agility IRL)

Welcome to the forums. You have just shown you did not read the first post of this topic :) . Archery is already confirmed in Combat.

I'd LOVE to see Unarmored in. If it is, I will play a mage at first walkthrough for sure!

And merging Security and Sneak makes NO sense at all, what, if you pick a thousand of locks, you would sneak around less noticeable? Wut?

Though newSpeechcraft = Mercantile + oldSpeechcraft actually makes perfect sense, cause at least in TES Mercantile has always been convincing the shopkeeper to sell for a smaller price, and that's what you do with your speech. And that would make two perfect branches for the skill's perk tree!

And I can't see how the Archery is under Combat... It always was a part of a "rogue" archetype, which is nothing else than TES' Stealth skill set. Actually that all would make perfect sense if there was Hand-to-Hand skill. It would be under Combat, and archery under Stealth (plus Security/Lockpicking). But I agree that H2H was pointless, though some people have actually played as 'boxer'.

So, Security is in, otherwise I'll be very, very suprised and disappointed by Bethesda, and I hope the remaining skill is Unarmored, though I don't believe it's in.

I can't remember exactly where I saw the bit from Todd, but does anyone else remember him saying something about daggers being a stealth based thing even though they fall under one-handed?

Yes, he said its stealth-kill perks is under sneak, not under one-handed, though one-handed skill still influences its damage in open battle

lol@me

i did read the op but missed the archery part twice. makes sense though for stealth from a certain perspective but as the action is a combat exclusive it makes sense that it is where it is. I wonder if there might be a skill associated with dodging..

and who says archery is combat and not stealth

I was thinking the same thing, but in the demo video from G4 when they are showing the skills they were color coded for combat, magic, and stealth, and archery was in with the combat stuff.

How does moving Archery from stealth make sense?
All combat skills you put up (minus archery) increase due to your Strength. Archery? Archery goes off of agility (or speed I forget)
Almost every stealth skills is increased off of agility (or speed, again I forget) It makes sense it would be grouped with skills that all increase from the same attribute.

pretty sure they made this change because you never use archery except as part of combat.

Combat:
Smithing - Heavy Armor - Block - TwoHanded - OneHanded - Archery

Magic
Illusion - Conjuration - Destruction - Restoration - Alteration - Enchanting

Stealth:
Light Armor - Sneak - ? - ? - Speechcraft - Alchemy

So, we are left with two unconfirmed skills in the stealth tree. Quite a surprise to me.

Stealth skills in previous games were Acrobatics, Hand to Hand, Mercantile, Security and Short Blade. We know that Acrobatics and Hand to Hand are out, and I don't think they will create another skill just for daggers, which leaves us with Mercantile and Security.
However, when compared to the other skills, both options seem quite lacking. Mercantile is basically just a branch of Speechcraft, and Security's only function is to open locked chests and doors, which can be easily accomplished with Alteration spells (and that skill is infinitely more useful). So, either they come up with better uses for Mercantile and Security, or introduce some new skills.

Any thoughts?

Alchemy under Stealth??? I would think that would be under Magic...

First of all, there are no attributes like Strength and Agility anymore.
Secondly, Isn't it kinda weird that Archery goes under Agility? While it is certainly a plus to be agile if your using a bow, isn't Strength a more fitting attribute for it, seeing that you have to draw it and all? Always thought that was weird...

I personally think speech craft and mercantile should be integrated, they are 2 halves of a whole, after all speech craft isnt represented as actual speech giving as in politics, more as a persuasive way of talking which makes it more akin to bartering to me.

I dont think so, if you are actually familiar with bows then you would know it depends on the bow type, some bows require very little in the way of strength to be used competently, yet all types require a great deal of agility to be used well.

i think the 2 are security (for locks, traps, etc) and merchantile (but this skill will help with jobs aswell).

if merchantile has been mixed with speechcraft then idk cause i dont think well have a skill that mixes atheletics, acrobat, and H2H since the devs have stated those skills were out or pointless to have (acrobat and atheletics). also i dont think security will be mixed with stealth since the skills needed for the 2 have no releation at all to each other (as in why should you get better at sneaking by unlocking a chest).

Security/Lockpicking could be folded into Stealth, and Merchantile could be folded into Speachcraft. I'm really hoping we see some 'new' skills in the stealth tree, because at the moment it is looking a little bland. A tracking/survivalist type skill for archer/ranger builds for instance.

yah

I wonder what they are though XD

hmmmm I'm guessing it will probably be some kind of an Assassination/Rogue skill thingy, and throwables XD :toughninja:

I think that mercantile will be merged into speechcraft, but it will have its own set of perks. I also would not be surprised if security was merged into stealth, but who knows. I doubt they will have a streamlined athletics-acrobatics skill. I hope they bring back unarmored, but I doubt they will.

Well, from the recent Cheng interview it seems likely that HtH is the missing Stealth skill. Though personally I'd probably prefer a skill that incorporated athletics, acrobatics and HtH under the same umbrella.

Security is a lock. Hehe.

No clue about the other one, since I agree that mercantile will be tied up with speechcraft.

i want to be able to dodge too so throw that in... those dragons look pretty big with attacks that effect large areas so a quick dodge movement seems natural to me....... oblivion had that dodge that came with leveling up your acrobatics... i enjoyed that even though i think it could have been done better... and i think it will be more useful with the larger enemies that skyrim will have to offer....

My votes would be...

- Security (uses lock picking, trap setting, trap disarming to level up)
- Survival (uses fishing, wood cutting, fire making, cooking to level up)

It's confirmed that you can cook stuff, so I assume this has to be incorporated in to the skill tree somehow, just like smithing, enchanting, and alchemy. Also, I thought they confirmed no athletics and no acrobatics to eliminate folks spam jumping across the land. Finally, to remove confusion as to which skills go where, there should only be 6 skills per archetype. (Which is why Archery should be in combat, not stealth). Thus...

Combat (6) - Smithing, Heavy Armor, Block, Two Handed, One Handed, Archery
Magic (6) - Enchanting, Alteration, Restoration, Destruction, Conjuration, Illusion
Stealth (6) - Sneak, Alchemy, Speech, Light Armor, Security, Survival
