Out of all my characters, only two have made it to the Glory of the Dead quest. Since my current character doesn't fast travel, I decided to walk to the tomb with The Circle. All went well until we got to Dawnstar. Once we got there, my companions took a right turn up into the snowy mountains. They continued on a bit until they turned around and headed back to Dawnstar. When we got back to Dawnstar, they turned around again and headed back to the mountains. This repeated itself until I gave up following them and walked there myself. Turns out Aela, Vilkas and Farkas can't navigate too well haha

Fort Kastav on the trip back is always interesting.
