The Cost of Saving

Post » Sat Nov 06, 2010 4:30 pm

Good Morning Kids,

Yet another fine day of reading the forums has brought me to a very important question...

Whilst I enjoy the regular TES save game mechanic, should the DEV not attempt to take the next step in creating a new "SAVE GAME" mechanic that will actually cost the player?

Understanding that saving is probably the most important aspect of any game (related to RPG, as a simple mistake will kill you), should there not be price (money, time, % loss in skills, etc...)

Please provide your opinion and try to keep the flaming to an all time low!

Penalize me for saving?

I mean there is problem enough saving at the wrong time or not saving enough, this seems like a deterrent, and when I mess up Im already penalized in time, money and skills by reverting to an older save...this would only increase that..

I'd hit it, as a Realism/hardcoe mode option :D

I like being able to save whenever I want, wherever I want, however I want. I hate games that restrict that, because to me, it's more of a nuisance than something immersive or something good.

No. A million times no. I want to save whenever I want for whatever reason I want. It's part of the freedom of playing an Elder Scrolls game. I don't want to be penalized for not playing nonstop. I hate this idea. Not everyone plays in such a hardcoe way, the majority of gamers do not, I'd imagine.

No, as people save not just for fear of being killed or making a mistake but of crashes and powercuts.

Considering how easy it is for a game of this size and complexity to glitch, I save often and save saves so I feel saving should have no cost to the player.

How is that the next step in saved games? Advancement in technology is supposed to make things better, not more irritating.

What if you have just bought a house, and are completely skint, will the game tell you that the option to save is unavailable. Sorry, but no.

Granted the issues with crashes and glitches will always plague the gaming world, there must still be a better way to manage the frequency of game saves.

I feel like people reduce themselves to worry about glitches and such just becuase it is easy to make such a statement. I am an avid gamer, and really hate glitches (only bad ones I have experianced were with FO: NV), but I still wonder if there is a better way.

When you chaulk it down, this arguement is similar to the fast travel option (you have the choice to use it); personally i hate having the choice to use it or not as there should be contsant established. The game should have a series of automatic saves within it to avoid crashes - similar to Word Autosave, but different than the current autosaves which games offer (enter into a dungeon and it saves). Make no option to save unless you are clearly done gaming for the day.

Maybe with imbedded saves, once you die you must pay a fine(again not sure what this will be) to ressurect back to where you just got your ass kicked.

Simply put: I want to save when I want, where I want, how often I want, who I want! With nothing to stop me.

People can choose to save as frequently or infrequently as they want. I shouldn't be penalized for being careful.

I don't want to be penalized only because I've got things to do more important than a game.

Kids?

The way Oblivion did saves is fine. If you haven't saved in a while and make a stupid mistake, it's your fault you died. What isn't your fault are game breaker bugs like getting stuck in a wall or rock or pit or something, but that is off topic. F5 is a staple of PC gaming.

While appreciating and completely understanding games reluctaness to approach this question as even being a question worth asking, I still believe there is a better discussion to be had - rather than a simple response.

The purpose of the question is not to say you should not be able to save, but how do you incorporate a save game mechanic which forces more difficult choices out of the player.

"Kids" - sorry - force of habit, nothing personal as I still greet my grandparents in that exact same way!

Please, no. Save-anywhere is fine. For a series that encourages freedom as much as TES does, you should be allowed to save before trying something where you aren't sure what the result will be. That's half the fun of the series, and it would take a lot away from the game not to allow it. Plus, I'm not one that usually advocates the "don't like it, don't use it" argument, but in this case it's a valid argument. If you don't want to use it, set a limit for yourself where you only save every 20 minutes or something like that, but don't limit other players who actually like the feature.
