The curious case of Allistair Tenpenny

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 1:29 am

If you visisted Tenpenny Tower in Fallout 3, then you most likely had an encounter with Allistair Tenpenny. He left England and came to America in search of somehing. Was it fortune? Power? Comfort? Regardless of what the answer is, I feel as if he didn't play a big enough role in the universe. We can safely assume that he was already a wealthy and influential man, but is that it? A man like him should have been conquering cities, expanding, acting as a voice of the people, or even getting involved with the BoS or Enclave. Instead, he sits on his rear all day smoking, drinking, playing chess, and occasionally shooting creatures/people with his sniper rifle...all of which he did alone. It is also mentioned that he once hired five mercenaries to find some sort of weapon in Fort Constantine which turned out to be a T-51b power armor suit. What did he intend on doing with it? What do you guys think about the old man? And what's up with wanting to blow up Megaton?

He didn't want to blow up Megaton, that was Mr Burkes idea because Tenpenny mentioned it spoiled his view. Everything else is due to him being English landed gentry. ie; boredom.

Right, I forgot about the whole view scenarion. As for the English aspect of it, I wouldn't know anything about that.

He didn't want to blow up Megaton

Yes he does, perhaps not originally but he is fully complacent in it now. The Lone Wanderer directly confronts him on it.

"I've been wondering Mr. Tenpenny, why blow up Megaton?"

It wasn't Tenpenny's idea but he was fully complacent with it. As for the rest of Tenpenny's past Bethesda coyly decideded not to answer, he's just an eccentric English stereotype.

He's not actually British, he is faking that accent, which is pretty obvious.

Yeah the difference is Bethesda thought an actual British person would act that way. Tenpenny is honestly one of the most baffling characters in Fallout 3 to me. What did a caricature of a British imperialist add to either the game or Tenpenny Towers? Was he supposed to be funny? He's certainly not menacing or imposing as you would expect from a powerful evil bastard who wipes out towns on a whim.

Tenpenny bugs the hell out of me. One of the great examples of bad writing. There is nothing in Fallout 3 that says he is from England, but one of the devs of Fallout 3 said that he is from England. So why didn't you give us a great story as to how he got to America and why? But no Bethesda didn't see the need to give us any information other than a dev interview. Good job Bethesda, your laziness is truly inspiring :tops:

Well there's the game loading screen which mentions it, but that's literally it. Its never explained beyond "yeah he's English."

Apparently crossing the post-apocalyptic Atlantic Ocean is so commonplace that its now trivial according to Bethesda.

That or they never expected people to ask questions such as who?, what?, where?, when?, why? and how?

Bethesda's thought process in making Fallout 3:

Step 1: buy Fallout franchise.

Step 2: ???

Step 3: Profit

That's all I have to say about that.

But Loxley isn't really from England. He is making up that accent. That's why it is so bad. He got it from reading Robin Hood.

Couldn't agree more. I guess they felt the need to throw in something "different" but it was poorly executed.

Come to think of it, doesn't it say something about Colin Moriarty's father coming to America from Ireland or somesuch? I always found that odd, if not a little out-of-place.

Yeah I remember seeing something about him coming to America when he was a kid. Not sure if that was in the actual game or elsewhere....

Bethesda tries to reference Howard Hughes, we get a man who travels from Britain to DC for no explainable reason (keep in mind DC is one of the HARDEST hit locations. Raul of New Vegas gives the impression that it got hit hard enough for word of it's condition to spread cross-country), hires a team of mercenaries to retrieve a suit of Power Armor for no explainable reason, fires on random things and people in the wastes for no explainable reason, builds a tower exclusively for rich people in the middle of a wasteland where people are simply fighting for survival for no explainable reason and blows up the second-largest community in the Capital Wasteland for no explainable reason.

Obsidian tries to reference Howard Hughes, we get a pragmatic billionaire genius inventor and businessman who works hard and dedicates his life to the progress of humanity and has a particular fondness for the city of Las Vegas and snowglobes.

Funny how that works out.

Dude Beth doesnt need to give a background story about everyone, just enjoy the game instead of calling Beth lazy just cause they didnt write a book about ONE SINGLE CHARACTER in their game.

Some people

But he's one of the more "memorable" characters of Fallout, don't you think he ought to have some depth? FNV gives depth to loads of characters, many that aren't even that important which then makes them memorable and interesting.
