The current video card / driver combination does not support

Post » Sun May 01, 2011 11:12 pm

This is the error that now greets me after previously only crashing every time I tried to launch Brink.

The current video card / driver combination does not support OpenGL 3.1 or newer.

The current drivers (11.5a for ATi HD 4xxx series) cause my computer to crash, thus I am forced to rollback my drivers to factory default. Which for ASUS is a driver from 2009. I'm at my wits end here. What am I missing here? Does my video card not support the game? Because in the Steam system requirements listed, an ATI Radeon HD 2900 Pro or equivalent is the MINIMUM system requirement.

What can I do? I need an official response here.

Edit: My video card is an ASUS ATI Radeon HD 4650.

You neglected to mention which video card you've got.

It would appear that I did. I've edited my initial post.

I've looked up the specifications for the ATI Radeon HD 2900 Pro and it uses OpenGL 2.1, so how can the minimum required card to run Brink only support OpenGL 2.1 when the game clearly states in the console I require OpenGL 3.1 or greater?

No clue unless the minimums are wrong. The 4650 should work though. Best solution I could offer is to download the 11.3 drivers (I'd stay away from 11.4/11.5 as they seem to hurt performance on anything other than the 6xxx series in Brink), uninstall your current drivers, then install the drivers you downloaded.

2900 series uses 3.1

And the 4600 series according to AMD's website supports OpenGL 3.2 which isn't the case. In fact all of the HD cards support OpenGL 3.1 or greater according to AMD's website, however if you do an internet search for the specifications (google) of the cards you'll see that multiple sources report OpenGL 2.1 support only.

I've already requested a refund with Steam, I'm done jumping through hoops.

I have a ATI Mobility 4650HD, and it does not work for me at all. I have an OpenGL of 3.0, do you really need OpenGL 3.1 to play this?

Anybody have any idea on this?

Yeah same problem for me.

I have an ATI Radeon 3100, and I just updated my drivers. According to AMD Engine control center, I should have OpenGL 6.1, but I still get this same error on startup.

I displayed this problem to my TF2 clan's forum, and someone said there was a steam driver update for ATI, though I'm not sure how to find it. If you can, it may solve our problems. He also stated that the 11.a update or whatever could help, though I honestly don't know what that is. Anyone care to clarify?
