Yes, there is a connection: The Night Mother IS Mephala; she's pulling a fast one on his gullible little wayward minions. :)

Mephala can't be the only one. There's also the one entombed under Bravil, and the one in Morrowind with the skull with cursed Dwemer coins in its sockets. And there have probably been others.

Think about who you're talking about here: She's an Et'ada; a Daedric Prince. What is limiting him from being all the "night mothers"?

Forgive me if I seem harsh, but your arguement doesn't pan out because you forgot something very important...the Dark Brotherhood itself is frowned upon. In fact, their existence breaks the laws of the Empire. They're supposed to be hunted and brought to justice.

Why would they give a [censored] about what the Empire thinks about them worhsipping Mephala when worshipping someone else wouldn't make a darn bit of difference?

In my opinon, the only reason there are differences in Morrowind and Oblivion is because the dev team didn't do a good job panning out the DB in Oblivion. That's it. Plain and simple.

True.. I did not take that into consideration... My fault. I do however still believe the Night Mother is Mephala....... Perhaps Mephala is using the NM as a ruse of sorts. And it's not that you seem harsh. It's that you didn't read my post before replying to it. I said it's my opinion. It has nothing to do with the dev team.

It is My Opinion! It dosn't have to be right, and maybe I'm wrong, that's just wat I think, and I'm not forcing anyone else to think it. I take no offense in your reply, I enjoy collective criticism. But next time notice the "My Opinion" in my post. I put it alot, because I know I may be wrong, and feel free at anytime to correct me. I'm here to learn more, not to try and show everyone up. That's just a bunch of childish bull [censored]. So thanks for opinion, no it wasn't harsh, and try not to bash the dev team, they kinda created the game, faulty or not. You wouldn't be posting in this lore had they not. So thank them, and have a crumpet -> ((that's a British tea biscuit incase you're wandering what it is...lol..)).... :P

I bid you farewell goodsir....cheers... :foodndrink:

The one in Morrowind could not be Mephala; she went down far too easily and Mephala's own followers order to have her killed. The one who's corpse lies under Bravil cannot be Mephala, because she died.

Not quite understanding the concept of Daedric Prince, are we?

This is Mephala we're talking about. The Prince of Plots. The Webspinner. The one that sends you to a peaceful hamlet of nords and dunmer to forment animosity between them that didn't exist before for his own entertainment. She could have planned to be "killed" all along by her own followers as part of the whole scheme to have both his little bands of beloved followers murder each other. Daedra also take whatever physical form they wish, seeing that they are, at the core, abstract entities. If he wanted, she could take the form of a "dead" old crone.

Granted, when looking logically, it fails to prove she's Mephala, but it also just as much fails to prove he isn't. In a way, the ambiguity of the Night Mother's true identity is pretty strong evidence that it's Mephala, because the whole little scheme is right up the Webspinner's alley.

Mephala could be the one under Bravil, but as for the woman in Morrowind, it's possible that she was ordered killed by Mephala for taking up the title of Night Mother. Nothing conclusive, but possible, especially considering that you have to kill her to recover the Threads of the Webspinner that she holds in order to gain Mephala's favor. And the fact that she was allied with Mehrunes Dagon cultists.

BTW, nice job addressing Mephala's gender.

Nice. Definitely liked the ambiguity of gender used in your post, Madcat. I also think you are definitely on to something in what you said about Mephala creating both groups and setting them after one another as an elaborate game which he/she enjoys watching. As for the identity of the "night mother"...

I believe there have been many night mothers and will be many more before Lorkhan returns...

Probably the original night mother was an avatar of Mephala, and therefore it is true what the in game book says. I agree, also with Crimson about the MW night mother not being mephala.

I also agree with Narrator. Am I the only one that realized when he said Empire, he was talking about Cyrodilian culture, not so much the empire as an autonomous entity? To anyone who thinks this was an oversight on the part of the developers, I have this to say to you: The stigma attached to daedric worship during the O crisis would possibly deter candidates for membership, as well as clientelle. Think about it, man. That's why in other provinces the DB still reveres mephala but just not in the game OB. It's not laziness on the Devs' parts. The lack of Mephalite worship in the Cyrodilian DB makes things either more or less complicated depending on how deeply you look at it. As I've always said, TES is a thinking-man's game. In this case, there is a perfectly logical explanation for it, if you have the eyes to see and the ears to hear such a thing. If you simply wanna plug your ears, close your eyes, and bash the devs, then go right on ahead. It's your choice. ;)

They're a secretive organization anyway, so they're hiding the fact that they worship Mephala from themselves?

Frowned upon? They aren't really. They're useful. They don't give a date I don't think, but the book on them says,

"In a remarkable syncroncity at a time when the Arena was a fractured land, the Morag Tong was outlawed throughout the continent. Every sovereign gave the cult's elimination his highest priority. Nothing more was officially heard of them for a hundred years. "

Then of course the organization is off the radar, and they reappear as the Dark Brotherhood in the second era.

"The important distinction between the Dark Brotherhood and the Morag Tong was that the Brotherhood was a business as much as a cult. Rulers and wealthy merchants now used the order as an assassin's guild. The Brotherhood gained the obvious benefits of a profitable enterprise, as well as the secondary benefit that no longer could rulers actively persecute them. They were needed. Even an extremely virtuous leader would be unwise to maltreat the Brotherhood."

We're in business! Then the Colovian Emperor Potentate Savirien-Chorak and every one of his heirs was murdered on one bloody night in Sun's Dawn in 430. We find out later that Savirien-Chorak was the son of Versidue-Shaie, making him at least 450 years old. Interesting to know the snakes can live so long. That is unless they like taking the names of previous rulers without adding numbers behind them, which is inconvenient.

The empire likes them for their secular nature. I think they have a don't ask don't care thing going on. Then again the officials of the empire could just summon Mephala themselves when they need a strike if the Brotherhood is too devoted, which means less money for the Brotherhood.

Technically they are "officialy" opposed by the Empire. When it comes to practice, not so much. So you're right about that. However, that's not the issue I was going for. The DB is supposed to worship Mephala as the Night Mother and believe in the force and idea of Sithis. They have it backwards in Oblivion.

Let's just say, for the sake of argument, that the devs were lazy and just didn't think about whatever they were doing. That is still beside the point.

Whether or not the devs decided to go for beers instead of thinking this thru or not, it's now a part of the lore of TES, this seemingly constrasting belief system of two assassin guilds. It's up to future devs and loremasters (and petty curious-persons like you and me) to figure out how it all makes sense. This is the beauty of TES: when we (or the devs) screw up, that's it; the real challenge comes in making sense of it all.

I'm glad to see someone understood me. Perhaps I should've went more into detail as opposed to saying Empire I should've said Cyrodiilian Culture. The Dude saw what I meant, but no one else did... That is my fault I suppose... Thanks for clearin that up Dude.
I'll try to better explain my point (clarify things a little better), in the future.

Actually she could be Mephala.... The Webspinner... Mephala is decietful. I imagine she would do many things if he thought there might be some fun it.

My view on this (my opnion) is that Mephala simply got bored, and found an entertaining way out. Perhaps she only went down so easily because he wanted her to.

And maybe, just maybe that was just her [censored] with his followers heads. It does seem like him/her to do something like that.
But that is just My Opinion.

BTW, nice job addressing Mephala's gender.

The reason he/she did that was probably because Mephala, unlike other daedric princes, changes his/her gender. For example, Azura is always female and Sheogorath is always male, but Mephala will change his/her gender depending on who he/she wishes to ensnare.

I think the prayers to Sithis and the Night Mother are prayers heard by Mephala. I'd expect Sheogorath to throw a "reply" from Sithis every now and then though, just to keep their faith and attendance up. Who knows? Maybe the DB is a long running Daedric joke.
