The Dark brotherhood dilemma (spoilers)

Post » Sun May 05, 2013 6:42 pm

There's no doubt that DB has a great and unusual story and exciting twists that really add to the game. However, I only completed their quests once and even after that I reloaded my save and destroyed them.

I don't have a problem with the assassinations... heck, there's a civil war in Skyrim, lots of freaks, worshipers, necromancers, draugurs, etc... are walking on the ground so "killing" is not something that anyone could or should avoid. Besides, people that are on the assassination list are usually, though not always - bad guys.

The problem I have with DB are their personalities. When you talk to them, every single of them is a psychopath. Unlike Thieves guild, that are bunch of usually cool and badass dudes and girls, DB are freaks. Sure, Astrid and her husband are very unique and interesting, not to mention Cicero, but... it's kind of hard for me to digest them all at once.

I'm on my way again - to finally stick with them or destroy them... sigh!

The DB needs to go away. I hope that the return of the Morag Tong means in the next TES game will have a PROFESSIONAL assassins' guild and not a freak kindergarten of murder loving psychopaths.

Sometimes I'll join then, sometimes I'll destroy them. All depends on what kind of character I have. If I sided with the empire I'll destroy them.

Yeah I find the Dark Brotherhood to be too chaotic with the characters. Plus I find the story to be a bit bland and dull. I don't feel like part of the family nor do I care too much for them. I would have preferred to have the characters be more serious, believable and likeable.

The Dark Brotherhood are psychopaths.

It's what they are, it's what they do.

Thieves Guild are mostly selfish and greedy but rational. Dark Brotherhood are people that either like to murder for the fun of it, or because they are involved in a bizarre death worshiping cult. So I would expect the DB to be less "stable" than the TG.

Hopefully bethesda consider the complete destruction of the darkbrotherhood in the canon. The guild is basically pathetic now, down to just one sanctuary. In fact i believe Commander Maro already cracked the code of the password. It is only a matter of time before he and his group of 'imperials' flood the sanctuary.

I do hope the next TES will feature morag tong as the 'official' assassin guild. Which means, maybe it is time to go to the Morrowind Mainland!

Exactly. I guess some people got me wrong - I have nothing against DB in terms how Bethesda made the script. I think it's brilliant!

I see DB as a cult where some cultist are fundamentalists like Cicero while others lost faith in their Nightmother or question her existence. They are not just cold professional assassin organization. That's why you become part of the "family", because that's what they are. And of course they are psychopaths - that's also completely normal considering what they represent.

So in my opinion Bethesda did this brilliantly - I totally "get" their characters and their behaviour, that's why I have this dilemma. Siding with psychos weren't my thing, yet I miss the story and twists behind them. In the end, DB does get destroyed in a certain way with Cicero killed by me... so I just might bite the bullet and go for it this time.

Destroying the DB is such a let-down. I prefer joining them, even though I think the characters and questline are lacking compared to what we got in Oblivion, plus I enjoy the fear I inspire in the stupid psychic guards.

The DB is made up of individuals who enjoy killing period. Of course they have contracts that they must complete, but in their spare time, murder is just another activity. You pretty much need to have a much "darker" outlook on life to fit in. If you feel remorse for killing a random man/woman, you don't belong there.

Saying the DB needs to "go away" is like saying every other major guild needs to go away. Besides, when was the last time you heard a "kindergartner" talk about brutal murder? Also, who better to assassinate someone than a psychopath?

PS: The Morag Tong doesn't have an all seeing patron to guide them. The Night Mother is the eyes and ears of the DB. The DB have accomplished far more than the Morag Tong ever could. Ex: The assassination of the emperor of the Empire. The DB may be on the verge of eradication, but the Morag Tong are no better off, with less to show for it.

I used to think the DB was way cooler than the MT.

Then I did some research, and now I hope the Morag Tong kicks the [censored] out of the Brotherhood someday. I hate them.

Someone suggested an alternate questline for destroying them, where you work with/join the Penitus Oculatus and stop them from assassinating the Emperor.

I thought it was a fantastic idea.
