Thats almost the entirety of TES's lore, trying to figure out what actually makes what tick.

Until any actual proof of mephala being behind the dark brotherhood is given, I will be a strong believer of sithis and the night mother. All hail the void!

Man, I'm pretty much done here. Thought the lore forum would be a good place to read up on TES lore, but it's more like a place for people to debate their interpretations of the lore. NTY!

You can't understand the lore without interpreting it, unless you have some kind of direct channel with the writers' brains. This is, incidentally, true of all literature, and of other forms of knowledge. Arguing is how we learn- though in this forum, it's more that learning is how we argue.

There is evidence to support both sides of this debate, actually. I don't quite understand why this is such a volatile issue, to be honest. Can't we all just agree to differently misinterpret?
I think it tends to be a hot topic because people like to do the whole juvenile "evil is cool" thing. So when people put forward the interpretation of lore that actually follows previous tone (and, in the case of just what Sithis is and the types of tricks Mephala tends to play, previous facts) it gets messy because you can't pretend Sithis is some evil death god.

That is what TES lore is. Interpretations.

Rather, TES lore is all misinterpretation.
