The Dead Is Dead Thread #9

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 10:17 pm

As incredible as it is, here is thread #9. I had no idea how much other forum users would be interested in talking about or playing DID. You guys have certainly given me my answer. All the credit goes to everyone who has contributed, even those who haven't played DID, but brought some interesting points of their own to the conversation. Without further ado, heeeeeeeeeeeeere's Johnny!

DEAD IS DEAD HALL OF HEROES

'Forward, the Light Brigade!'
Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the soldiers knew
? Some one had blunder'd:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
? Rode the six hundred.
-Alfred, Lord Tennyson

So I was thinking about Fallout 3 Dead is Dead. Would you count dying in Operation Anchorage as that character dying?

It's stated that dying on the simulation, kills you in the Wasteland, full hardcoe MLG playa settings are enabled.

Playing BF3 ATM, but will get back on DID soon enough.

I had to quit playing Fallout NV because my only Xbox 360 controller broke. So back to Ps3. (And I just brought Battlefield 3 on Xbox 360 )

List of ways you can suddenly die in Fallout 3:

-Stand next to a car
-Enslave Flak or whatever his name is, Shrapnel will hit the road armed with a friggin' Fatman, and sometimes he'll "help" you with that supermutant that's right next to you
-Super Mutant Overlord. Ignores DR.
-Chinese stealth suit snipers in Operation Anchorage
-Getting caught far away from a health dispenser in Operation Anchorage
-Albino Radscorpions
-Stand next to a bus
-Random idiot raider with a rocket launcher who just doesn't give a [censored] about the dangers of firing it at point-blank range
-Falling in the Pitt
-Bottlecap mines, your own or otherwise
-Mess up the ending puzzle for Mothership Zeta
-Fail to survive your first trip to farm Steel Ignots
-Random carpet-bombing from the Enclave
-Randomly get blown up by the crazy Preacher
-The glitched Feral Ghoul reavers in Taft tunnels
-Stand next to a motorcycle
-Stand
-Don't stand

Basically don't touch anything, because everything has a nuclear core. Even trees.

I've died by all of those and more. Another one
-Be a victim of Fawkes rampage. That randomly happens.

I said "neither" on Fallout: (?) and Skyrim out of the gate since, to me that seems impossible. Just don't know enough about the combat system/perks/dragons to go that route, and we know nothing about whatever or wherever the next Fallout game will be. Still, after a few hours with Skyrim I may make a DID character if it's a bit too easy.

That's my thought also. I usually don't play DID until a coupla runs to experience the new content. I'm the one who answered "No way, crazy DID Guy." And I'm the crazy DID guy. (well, one of them.)

I'm addicted to DID. I feel awkward if I'm not doing so.

I think I said in the last thread that I put a pause on DID, because I wanted to make a character for each faction, each one personifying their character's faction, with a SPECIAL and Perk setup to reflect the performance and culture of their faction as presented in-game. (for example, NCR has high perception and agility due to their love of guns and sniping from afar, and they also get all the VATS accuracy and gun-related perks, but they suffer from low Luck to reflect their soldiers being robbed dry by the Strip and a couple other unlucky factors. Other factors apply too: they'd lack the Turbo recipe and a turbo supply because they're enemies of the Great Khans, they'd lack power armor training because the NCR doesn't tolerate the BoS or the Enclave, no using energy weapons or heavy explosives beyond grenades and possibly grenade launchers because it'd be out of character, etc etc etc.) The point of the project was that I wanted a feel for how strong each faction was if you personified them and made an "ultimate warrior" to reflect their strengths and weakness; I wanted to see who had the strongest personification. Still doing that, but recently I started asking myself what the point is in continuing if none of the factions I've tried so far have a winning combination; yeah it could be fun to see who's the STRONGEST, but so far none of them have been strong ENOUGH to survive the Mojave, unlike Courier Six. :P

I feel stupid if I try to make some overpowered character when I know the character's true fate saw them dying on some random day in some random battle. An overpowered badass character just feels even more badass if you know that his true fate has him surviving all those close-calls and intense battles. Maybe I'll start DIDing again, and if I do get Skyrim, I'll definitely be DIDing straight out of the gate.

I hope you brought plenty of ammo. I recently played it too; I'd forgotten how expensive that DLC was. I'm pretty sure I went in with 500 rounds of....5 different ammo types, 2000 of a 6th. By the time the DLC was over, I had 100 bullets left of only two of those, the other four were completely depleted.

I got 1,000 rounds of .44 SWC ammo for mysterious magnum

I got 250 shells of 40mm grenades for Thump Thump

I got about 5,000 rounds of 9mm JHP for Maria and Vance's 9mm submachingun

I got about 5 pulse grenades

I got 15 Satchel Charges

I got 250 rounds of .308 JSP for Gobi Campaign Scout Rifle

I'll probably run one more DID before Skyrim. I'll have another go at Melee/Unarmed but level it equally with guns for increased wasteland survivability. So I'll bring back Natalia from my last abysmal effort and make her an assassin type, contracted by House to secure the Platinum Chip. She will be expert in sniper rifles and a melee/unarmed weapon to be confirmed later. I'm leaning towards Gehenna, or some kind of Power Fist.

I'm currently enjoying my shotgun/explosive character so much that I'm taking him all the way to the end. The Grenade Rifle is just awesome, and if there is a better weapon/perk combination than the Hunting Shotgun + And Stay Back! I've yet to see it.

Ranger Willard had a few close calls at Big Mountain, but Thump Thump with demo expert 1,2,3, grunt, and splash damage took care of those tougher gangs of robots easily.

R.I.P.

Ranger Willard
Level 37
12.29.81

Completed 3 out of 4 DLC's: Dead Money, Honest Hearts, and Old World Blues

Killed in Badlands mod. Some guy ran into a house I was in with a light machine gun with AP rounds, I died in like one second.

I'm gonna make a new character with all of the modules in Arwen's Realism Tweaks. She has a new module called the one life module, so if you die, your body is looted, half your ammo is gone and your armor is stolen and sold to a vendor.

I've just seen this thread, I was beginning to think it was about another game until I looked at the awards. Then the bottlecap dropped.

When my character gets killed and I reload I've always felt like I'm playing a loser who didn't really win at all but died alone and unremarked in some back canyon surrounded by cazadores. I'm giving this a try and have got my character up to Wolfhorn ranch so far but its going to be difficult with increased spawns and awop and no compass. Plus I find it hard restricting skills to specific builds because I want to be good at everything.

I'll try to focus skill points on unarmed, guns survivalival and see how it goes. Oh yes there's medicine as well, and lockpicking (sigh) and explosives. Well I'm off to get some better armor 9dt just wont cut it I think.

Welcome aboard, and good luck. Don't feel the need to restrict yourself, unless you want to. Especially with when running difficulty mods. The only rule here is dead=dead.

PS - I know I've got to update the Honor Roll. I need to check through that last thread and make sure I didn't miss anyone. It's gonna have to wait til tomorrow, as I spent to much time tonight editing the wiki (yeah. I know. But if you can't beat 'em, you put your money where your mouth is.)
