With a personal mind controlled bodyguard in front, we continue our journey towards Ford Bannister.
Almost every ten seconds, Crow gives her a distrusted look as if she could turn around any second and start shooting everyone.
"Isn't it better if we'd just take that plasma pistol away from her?" He asks slightly frightened.
"I mean, it's not like she's got much use of it now."
"She could just as well save your life with that thing." Warren says, turning to Crow.
Crow looks awkwardly to his missing arm. "Well, not much to save anymore now."
He seems to be getting grumpier by the day, as if he doesn't see the cause anymore.
He slows down for a moment and falls back to the rear of the group.
I guess it's time to have a bit of a chat with him, not that I really feel like it.
"Hey Crow, what's wrong man?" I start off.
He gives me a look as if I should already know what's exactly going on.
"Don't you see?" He replies a bit agitated. "You guys are all fighting. And me, I'm stuck to be the ammo man?"
"What's wrong with that?" I ask him.
"Every villain you take care of is one less bad guy." He sighs.
"But with my condition (he takes another look at his amputated arm), I can't even take care of myself."
I look at him staggered. "But you're just as important as the rest of the group!
When someone is out of ammo, he would be shot in an instant.
And it's just like being a trader; you give the people what they need.
I can't deny that things are more difficult with just one arm, but I know that you can do this just as well as you did before."
After that little speech, he seems to have regained a bit of his former cheer.
"thanks." He says softly, as we walk back to our positions.
I hope he'll be his former self soon, because you know what they say; a sad ammo man is a dead ammo man.
He doesn't have much time left though; we've almost reached the fences of the fort.
We leave Harry where he is and advance on our own, further towards the fort.
Roo runs up to me and scribbles something on a note:
It's like the whole place is abandoned.
No one in sight, maybe they're all underground.
There is something new though, a satellite dish I haven't seen before.
That's not what I had pictured.
They would surely have someone on the lookout, wouldn't they?
But if they're this lazy, we'll have no problem in defeating them.
Either way, something just doesn't feel right.
We climb over the small hill to see an old battered keep surrounded by uninviting fences.
The fort itself has seen better days as most of it lies in ruins.
Walls are scattered everywhere, sticking just a few feet out of the ground.
A small part of the building is still standing up, but looks as if it has quite some problems with that task.
On top of it towers a satellite dish, almost as large as the building itself.
Abandoned tents are spread over the open area surrounded by rubble.
Some custom made defence towers not higher than ten feet are placed to give some cover.
"Fincher, Can you see something over there with your sniper?"
He looks around. "Wait; let me get up that hill over there."
He runs over to a nearby hill to get a better look and starts scoping the place.
"Nothing yet. Nothing yet." He mumbles, scanning the area.
"Wait, I see something. There, another? and another!"
Out of an old doorway, four men walk towards an open field in front of the fort.
They come to a halt next to one of the defence towers.
Among them, I see a few familiar faces which I wish I wouldn't see here.
The shortest person of them all needs no introduction, but I'm quite surprised to see him on the other team.
That's why they knew we would come. That's why I had a bad feeling.
Shorty tries to stand tall, but he isn't.
He looks to the man standing next to him, the largest man of the group.
No doubt he's the boss, the ringleader, the man who's responsible for all those deaths.
A young man, not much larger than Shorty, looks Roo in the eyes with a sinister grin on his face.
He's got oily black hair and wears the Talon's signature armor.
I've never seen him before, but I know exactly who he is.
Petrol ruined Roo's life and I guess Roo hasn't forgotten that just yet.
I guess we'll have to leave the boy to him.
He deserves his revenge.
One of the men I don't recognize walks up to us, unarmed.
He walks right up to me, knowingly heading for the leader.
When he reaches me, he stays just outside of my personal space.
He looks a bit confused to our young enclave bodyguard, but draws his attention back to me.
"Commander Jabsco wants to make this very clear to you all.
If you decide to commence battle with us, you will only taste the bitterness of defeat.
But if you want to live, Commander Jabsco invites you all to join him in his army."
The messenger sounds all but confident in his words.
Obviously he drew the shortest straw.
After all they have done to the people of the wasteland, they want us to join them?
I look to my left and to my right, only to see faces of disagree.
I don't think any one of us ever wants to join their terrible cause,
So I give the messenger our clear and short answer;
"There will be no conversations today, only bloodshed."
"All right then." The messenger replies. "Welcome gentleman, to your funeral."
He turns around and raises his hand as he walks back to the small group.
Out of nowhere, Talon troopers armed with rocket launchers, run up to the defence towers and take their positions.
Out of the distance, four Vertibirds come flying towards the fort and land next to the only intact building.
Twenty, maybe thirty Enclave soldiers poor out of the dark green birds followed by a man in grey suit.
It looks like all of my friends and foes have attended to this battle.
The messenger nearly reached the group back at the fort, as Argyle shoots him right in his head.
His body lies motionless on the ground, his head burning in purple flames.
The three remaining men look shocked but quickly get behind the barricaded walls.
I look at Argyle a bit taken aback. "Isn't that wrong?" I ask.
He looks back at me with fire in his eyes.
"That's not wrong. That's war."
At that moment, the rocketeers start firing their rockets at us.
They notice that they're out of range as the rockets fly past without anyone having to dodge them.
The statement of Argyle is a bit of an eye-opener to the rest of us.
If we want to win this thing, we'll have to play rough and tough.
Otherwise we'll end up just like that messenger.
"Okay guys, you know what the plan is," I shout to the Defenders. "so good luck, and good fight!"
Everyone runs rolls and crawls to their position as Fincher already takes out two of the rocketeers.
He stays behind, covered by rocks as the rest of us approach the fort with Roo as our guide.
He knows the place well, as he was a former involuntary recruit of the Talons.
With him on our side, we might just have that extra punch to win this war.
The enclave troops come storming up to us, every single one of them holding plasma guns.
They seem to run in groups of five, so I think it would be a shame not to try out our new Nuka grenades.
"Spead out!" I shout, as I throw my first Nuka grenade towards the approaching group of enclave soldiers.
They don't seem to even notice the grenade falling in their midst as members of our Defenders jump out of every corner shooting at them.
The tactic works well, as the grenade explodes in fiery golden and purple flames, incinerating every single one of them.
The next few grenades are less effective, but still, work quite well.
Meanwhile, Fincher seems to enjoy himself, because every now and then I see a Talon trooper falling down of a defence tower, or an advancing Enclave soldier drop dead out of the blue.
I crawl to Roo as the rest is giving me cover by fire. "Roo, take one of those Stealthboys and run over to a defence tower." I whisper to him "Then get the rockets and take out those enclave soldiers."
He immediately follows my orders and, within a second, vanishes out of sight.
Kemar seems to do fine with Argyle at his side, taking out more Talon troops emerging from the tent camp.
Crow goes back and forth, making sure that everyone has what he needs.
Warren and the enclave girl stick to my side, as we make way for the left side of the battlefield.
Warren seems to be controlling her in various ways using different buttons.
The commander Jabsco went this way and I want him dead as soon as possible.
As we hide behind one of the defence towers, I see him giving out orders to Shorty.
They're well hidden and have seen us approach from far.
Shorty runs towards the tents as Jabsco turns around to us.
"Did you really think you're going to win this?" He shouts in our direction.
"You're outnumbered five to one and don't even have some decent firepower."
"That's where you're wrong." I reply to him. "We've taken out many of your men and dodged everything you've thrown at us."
"Well then," He says as he grabs his rocket launcher. "try and dodge this!"
He fires his launcher and brings down the entire defence tower.
The rockets he's launching seem to be creating much more damage.
We're forced to get away from the tower before pieces fall on us.
Jabsco reloads his launcher kneeling secure behind his concrete wall.
Roo seems to have reached one of the towers and starts shooting Enclave troops, not knowing we're in a tight situation.
Jabsco stands up once again aimes the launcher at us ones more.
At that moment, Warren presses one of his buttons and the Enclave girl starts running at Jabsco.
He stands aback, but fires the launcher none the less, causing the rocket to hit the girl instantly.
Jabsco is hurled back against the ground as the explosion blasts the girl to bits.
I run up to him to finish him off, but lying on the ground bleeding, he laughs.
"You thought this was it?" He coughs, laughingly with blood in his mouth. "This is just the beginning."
He activates a radio device and coughs out his last breath.
I spit on his face, take his rocket launcher and retreat back to Kemar, Argyle and Crow.
The device seemed to activate the satellite dish as the dish starts rotating.
A low whooping sound emits but apart from that, nothing seems to happen.
The troops seem to retreat, trough the open area towards the last line of walls.
I manage to get some of them before they reach it.
It's as though they're waiting for something.
We all look around and above, but nothing seems to happen.
Suddenly, out of nothing; "Look there, in the distance!" Crow shouts.
Out of the horizon, hundreds of ghouls approach with great speed.
Fincher and Roo join us, trying to strengthen our position behind the torn wall.
The ghouls come closer and closer and the Defenders prepare to start shooting.
The army of brown rotting meat advance past the Talons and Enclave, paying no attention to them at all, but going straight for us.
"Well," I say to my fellow defenders. "I guess this is it."
Everyone nods and starts aiming for anything that comes up to us.
"No need for that." Warren replies with a smile on his face.
"Just look at what will happen."
The ghouls cross the open area when something odd happens.
As soon as they reach the other side of the area they start to turn around.
They don't seem to know what they want, going from one side to the other.
One of them loses it and starts fighting another ghoul.
All hell breaks loose.
The ghouls turn onto each other and start fighting themselves fiercely.
"What a fun little machine this is." Warren says smiling while looking at his mind controlling device.
The ghouls keep fighting each other and as everyone is enjoying the show on this side, all the men on the other side seem to disagree.
They don't know what just exactly happened, but start blaming the satellite dish.
Getting mad because their little plan didn't seem to work out as they wanted, they decide to start shooting back at us, hitting multiple ghouls as they go.
It's a massacre and within only minutes, all the ghouls lie dead on one big heap of meat.
"Let's hope that won't attract any Super Mutants." Fincher says jokingly.
The rest of the enclave and Talon keeps on shooting us though.
There's about fifteen left, but they all keep firing like mad.
Crow returns fire with his 10mm Quantum, but then something happens that none of us had expected.
One of the bullets hits the bottle of Quantum attached to Crows 10mm and explodes, right in his face.
The explosion hits both Kemar and Fincher in the side, leaving them gasping for pain on the ground.
I look back at Crow, lying down on the ground, still burning.
We throw sand on the fire quickly, but we know that it's already too late.
Crow has taken a lethal blow to the face. He is dead.
Kemar and Argyle seem to be burned quite badly, but they will survive.
Warren attends to them, while Roo and I grab both the remaining Quantum guns and start throwing them at the enemy.
They land just in front of the enemy's wall as we grab our launchers.
We stand up, pull the triggers and send of our deathly response.
The rockets collide with the stone and an enormous explosion follows.
The Quantum bottles merge into the blast, sending bricks and limbs out flying.
There is little movement left on the other side, but Petrol seems to have survived the blow and scurries towards the doorway.
With rage in his eyes, Roo follows him, using his last Stealthboy as he goes.
Warren is still mending the wounds of Kemar and Fincher.
"I'll go after the kid." Argyle says.
He's a rough guy, but has his heart in the right place.
"Okay," I reply. "I'll make sure that everything here is dead.
I get pas our wall of defence as Argyle disappears into the doorway.
Slowly scanning the area for any movement I walk forward with my old 10mm in my hand.
Everything here seems to be dead. There's not even a sound.
Then, within a second, a man stands up from behind the last remaining wall.
I turn to him to shoot but I'm too late, I'm way too late.
He pulls his trigger so fast, I wonder if he even took the time to aim.
Nonetheless the bullet approaches me.
It pierces right trough the Defenders emblem, the emblem that's stitched at the heart of my armor, at my heart.
From the moment it hits, everything slows down.
Sounds muffle down until the only thing I hear is a low buzz.
I try to turn around to Warren, to my friends, to the only people that matter at this moment.
I try, but my legs don't do as I tell them anymore.
They seem to have more trouble holding my weight, every time I try to move.
The man slowly moves in my direction.
He wears a dirty grey suit, a hat and glasses. He is my enemy, my nemesis.
I can tell it from the sinister smile on his face.
As I try to raise my gun, I notice that my arm won't listen to me anymore.
The only thing I seem to be capable of is holding it, firmly in my right hand.
The grey suited man moves even closer, wanting to witness my death with his own eyes.
His evil smile grows even larger.
At this moment, my legs decide to stop supporting me and I fall down on my knees.
The man stands now right in front of me.
His lips start to move, he's speaking to me.
All I hear is a low buzz. I can't make out any of the words he's saying.
I'm just looking at him, trying to keep alive.
The man seems to grow impatient and starts shouting now.
It doesn't help; I still hear nothing at all.
My vision seems to become blurry too, but I can see that the man is getting angry now.
He grabs his gun more firmly and starts pointing it at me.
It's funny how I can't see clearly anymore, but still recognize the .44 magnum in his hands.
I guess my life ends here. Here on the battlefield.
I always knew that this quest would leave me dead in the end, but I hoped to live through to see the very end.
Maybe I will, because just at the moment the man decides to pull the trigger, his look changes dramatically.
In an instant, his sinister grin fades into a look of fear.
His dirty grey jacket slowly changes red.
Burke has been shot.
He falls on his knees, opposite to me.
Looking me in the eyes one more time, I manage to create a last smile on my face before he falls face down to the ground.
Enough is enough. I can't support my own weight any longer.
So I let myself fall back, gently in the sand, leaving me staring in the sun.
The only thing to do now is waiting to die.
A young man's face appears in front of the sun.
He's also smiling, but tears leave his eyes at the same time.
I only have to look at Roo's face to know what he wants to say.
We've won.
Warren joins in, then Argyle, Fincher and Kemar, all happy, all sad.
It's good to see their faces one last time.
The sun takes over the view.
It shines so bright that everything starts to fade away.
The light doesn't hurt my eyes though.
It's all there is left.
One great white light, consuming all.
In the distance I hear music, sweet music.
It makes me smile, it makes me happy.
