The Demise of Spellmaking?

Post » Sat Oct 08, 2011 2:00 pm

First off I am not coming down on people who play magic users. I have played a few myself and I was slightly disappointed when I heard the spellcrafting had been taken out. But truth be told my characters never really used it that much, either I never had enough gold or I didn't have the right level of sould stored in a gem or something. And I tend to play warrior types, mostly Nords, and play them as straight barbarians. Not the usual "I depise all weavers of the Black Arts!!" type, but more of "I value my ability with the sword over an ability to cast a spell" type, since I still used magic, to heal, get better deals on gear, etc.

I think once we all get the game we'll never really notice that spellcrafting is gone once we get into the flow of it. Like I said that's just my opinion. But what's yours? How do you feel about not being able to make more spells?

I don't think I'll miss it, but I don't necessarily think it was something that should have been removed, either.

I think the fact that all of the spells look better, and everything just seems more "magical" while using magic makes up for it.

The search Bar has your answers, but in my opinion I'm not concerned with how much other people think its a "great thing" that its gone or that they didn't use it. It svcks that it went the way of so many other features, its gone, you cry about it, but it doesnt come back, even after 5 years.

Ya know.. I used to not care that spellmaking was gone. But now that I've replayed Morrowind/Oblivion. I'm gonna miss it. Not because of the overpowered spells. But because of the under-powered spells. Spell making was pretty much the best way to train spell skills ever.

So to answer the poll. I miss it, but I'll deal with it.

Couldn't care less that it's gone. That really sums it up for me.

Personally, I hate playing warriors. The entire melee fighting thing should be removed from the game because I don't use it. Its completely unrealistic.

Sounds a bit silly that way doesn't it..... but there it is.

The WORST design choice that Bethesda has made.

Spells make magical combat infinitely customizable. I remember I had one spell that made people pass out by draining all their stamina.

It's one of the first things that need to modded in.

since you can duel spells and spells scale to a players level/skill ( no need to make weak spells for powerleveling a skill) there isnt much need for the spell creation system.
With that said i wouldnt mind having a spell for transforming targets into say a sheep or a horse or some extra silly spells

There's no poll answer I need. I want to say : "I'll miss it but I think it's for the best it was removed"

I liked spellmaking purely for this:

1. Save your game.
2. Create an insanely overpowered spell.
3. Massacre everyone in sight.
4. Get bored.
5. Load old save.

This is the same reason I liked acrobatics; save game, jump onto roof tops, annihilate everything, load old save.

I'm going to miss the old Jack Vance style of "Hrothjorn's Flame of Reckoning" spells. Felt very oldschool.

I can see why the developers decided to remove it; the way combat/skill was revamped, spells are more flexible than their prepackaged predecessors. Can't say much else though; proponents for spellmaking have a lot better arguments than I can come up with. [Edit: Topic has been beaten to death before.]

Biscuits really are better with butter...mmm...biscuits...wait, erm...topic...spell crafting was removed. TES is weaker for its removal. It was removed because BGS was too lazy to find a proper way to implement it (or, rather, they made a cost/benefit anolysis based on the time needed to create the system versus the benefits the system would provide and decided it wasn't worth it). Skyrim will still be a wonderful game, even for us magic users.

While biscuits are better with butter, and even better with gravy I think spell making was an integral part of the magic system. It being gone is devastating to the mage experience. The more I see of the new system the more convinced I become that it was a big mistake to remove spell making.

In my opinion, spell creator was a shackles that dragged us down and prevented BGS from making some real original and fun magic system. Magic in Morrowind and Oblivion was bland. For Morrowind, it was more or less OK at the time but for Oblivion is was only more apparent. All spells created by players were bland too, there was no way out of it due to the blandness of the whole system.

Now, I'm wait and see for the spell list in Skyrim. Only once I'll have a look at the full list will I decide if it was worth it or not to lost spellmaking. I hope the answer will be positive though.

svcks a lot, it had plenty of potential and gave us the feeling of being powerful. Although the idea of it costing gold always seemed a bit silly to me.
