Is the DLC Worth it?

Post » Thu Nov 19, 2009 4:39 am

Is the DLC worth spending the money on? I absolutely love this game and am considering getting some DLC. But which DLC is the best? The one that includes Mania and Dementia I assume. How is Knights of the Nine? Is any of the smaller DLC (such as the Wizards Tower) worth the money?

Thanks,

Knights of the Nine is worth the price, plenty of entertainment there. Shivering Isles isnt a normal DLC, its actually a full blown expansion adding a vast new land with a new main quest, new enemies, new items and plenty of new ways to have fun.

The other DLC....well....not really. I got it in a pack that had all of them combined that was fairly cheap, but some of them are utter rip-offs. Horse Armour was a total joke, and Spell Tomes was nothing that couldn't be added through a mod for free. Battlehorn was free for a short time (thats when I got it) so I cant really comment there. Frostcrag Tower and Deepscorn Hollow to me were good for a laugh, but thats about it. Deepscorn Hollow ran out of interest after about 5 minutes, and the only thing that makes Frostcrag worth it to me is the mod Frostcrag Reborn. It really depends on whether you think a Bethesda-build house would be necessarily better than a modded home (in my opinion, not particularly)

Knights of the Nine & Shivering Isles are definitely worth it I also really like the mehrunes razor dlc. The smaller ones really depend on if you really want it, if you aren't interested in what they have to offer don't bother.

pretty much, SI and KoTN are must have for oblivion, SI is an expansion, and KoTN is a full DLC.

Mehnrunes Razor is great, and some of the houses can be good for certain characters....but they are too important.

Need a new twist to your game? Get the Knights of the Nine. Need a whole new plot and whole new world? Get Shivering Isles.

Now the others? They're pretty neat. That's to my opinion, though. I didn't get the Pirate Ship, 'cause it looks pretty useless...But most of the other DLC's are homes, or places to thrive.

Spoiler
Deepscorn Hollow, Frostcraig Spire, and Battlehorn Castle are the ones I have, plus Mehrune's Razor. I like Frostrcraig, due to the fact of the alchemical garden, Atronach tomes, and fast travel to the Mages' Guilds. Deepscorn Hollow, because of the fact you can cure your vampirism there, and your neat little assistant that goes out to kill for your?...And the prisoner there to not only to HELP your vampirism, but his nifty unconsciousness lets you level up in hand-to-hand and any attack skill 8D

Battlehorn's my newest one, and I'm a bit intrigued. I can have a follower, and statues made for me 8D And servants XDD I like it ^^

But it's up to you, really. Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine, though, I agree with the others, they're a MUST

I won't buy any of the DLC on principle. SI is fun the first time through, probably just because it's so different, but I've found it to have zero replay value. Most mods depend on it, though, so if you're on PC it is a must. If you're on console, save your money.

well i play on 360, and since i can't have mods there I bought every single piece of DLC for the game. Shivering Isles and Knight of the nine are must have and are very fun, and mehrunes razor has some really good loot in it. the orrerry is neat for a new ability that you can change, horse armor isn't terribly exciting but the new aesthetic was fine with me. in general the spells i find in tomes are fairly worthless and I get annoyed you can't delete spells like in morrowind. Battlehorn castle is pretty cool for a warrior character. the ability to make trophies and kill the lich in your basemant was cool. Frostcrag adds some awesome things for spellcasters, like your own echanting altars so you can ignore the mages guild for those of us who fancy we're telvanni, and the atronach familiars are cool. Deepscorn hallow is very cool for darker characters but i find it to remote to be of use. The pirate cove is also useful, but i rarely play thieves. hmmm which ones am i forgetting to talk about.

I have the GOTY edition, so that included SI and KOtN right from the first install. After playing all summer (~400 hours?) I have yet to try SI.

That doesn't say _anything_ bad about SI. Quite the contrary it is a statement on how good the basic Oblivion without DLC is.

I've had one character progress pretty far into KOtN, but not finish it. KOtN is defintely good, though I don't know what they charge for it separate. For $10 definitely, $15 yeah, $20 I suppose, $25 I would realyl start to question.

What do you generally have to pay for each of these DLC?

If you're on a console, then yes. It's extra content. If you're on the PC then they're still worth having if you want them, but perhaps not as valuable because arguably, player mods do a much better job.

I think there's more reason to get it on console because of the limited content. I think SI did many things better than Vanilla.

Anyways, I agree with most other people here. SI and KotN are musts. Frostcrag is nice. I don't know if I'd bother with anything else. Are you on PC or console?

Frostcrag is nice for alchemy. It is also nice if you don't want to do the mages guild initiation quests. For the alters of enchanting/spellmaking.

Frostcrag was only 1 dollar 50 cents for me so I'd say it would have to be pretty bad to not be worth it!

As said SI and KofN must haves.

Frostcrag and battlehorn are the best in my opinion. the other 2 are too remote like said and kind of annoying to go back into everytime.

Orrery-meh,
spell tomes-ok,
Mehrunes Razor, havent got but I hear you get some nice duds.

I'm kinda sorry to say it because I LOATHE this growing trend toward buying games piecemeal but Beth did a good job with the DLC and SI. Value for price is good. Just use your own judgment about what you want. If you don't use horses then Horse Armor isn't for you, but if you're rp'ing a knight in shining...it really does add a lot, and gives some much-needed protection to your steed. Spell Tomes is probably the weakest of the lot but it's still kind of fun to find spells instead of buying them. The Vile Lair is very out of the way but it offers an insta-cure for vampirism and an altar that the dedicated villain can use and a few other goodies. The Orrery's most important goodie is acquiring the drain attribute ability, which is great for archers. Mehrunes Dagger isn't a great weapon but it offers a very fun dungeon crawl and some nifty robes.

If buying them - Look for the retail version of the KOTN it is really cheap and includes all of the other DLCs except for BattleHorn Castle -- so you get almost all of them for the one price and then of course also get the SI expansion (I'd go with the retail version there also ) - After getting the retail SI and KOTN disk the only thing you still need would be Battlehorn Castle if you wanted a full sset of the DLCs

OR Direct2Drive also has the http://www.direct2drive.com/2103/product/Buy-The-Elder-Scrolls-4:-Oblivion----Knights-of-the-Nine-Downloadable-Content-Collection-Download

Okay, I'm confused. I bought the GOTY edition, and I know I have KOtN and SI, cause I see them in my OMOD list.

I guess this means, if I want the others I need to buy them individually right? If I had them already they would show up in the OMOD list right?

If you buy the GotY Deluxe edition from Steam, you'll get SI + KotN + the other DLC.

If you just buy GotY (any platform), it'll only have SI and Knights.

If I buy them from the Bethesda online store, how do I receive them?

You'll get a confirmation email with a link to where you can download them.

GOTY comes with KotN and SI only. The KotN DLC disc has all of the DLC except Battlehorn Castle. So yes, you would need to buy those separately.

I find every DLC now worth it,since it seems bethasoft has put alot of work to this game and the DLC content seems nice and everything (Shivering isle's gives me the shivers),besides they cost so little.
Horse armor mostly because i wanted a free horse.
And spell tomes will be nice so i can get some new spells.

I don't buy DLC. I bought the original Oblivion, then went and purchased the GOTY edition just to get KotN and SI (I picked it up real cheap, so I don't mind paying for Oblivion all over again).

Shivering Isles is a true expansion, quite alot of hours can be poured into it. You can in fact live a life inside SI (not sure if you can get a house), but its quite a world to live in. Tough enemies, the much flaunted Gatekeeper, and Demented and Maniacal inhabitants.
The main quest of SI is long, twisty and morally gray/black. Didn't find much heroic stuff to do, but then again, you do serve the Madgod of the Shivering Isles.

Conversely, KotN is all about being a hero -- a crusader in fact. Not an expansion, more a long-ish quest. Play it on a harder difficulty to reap the benefits; really you're playing it to get the sweet armour and weapons it offers. Fun for a high level character, if you're bored with standard guild missions or if you are looking for a nice leisurely walk/ride.

And on DLC.....I go through TesNexus to get "touch up" mods -- like DarkPhinix for graphics, and a few other mods I can't remember. I'm sure you can find plenty of free Mods there.

If you are on console...you have no choice. You will have to buy DLC. But then, you consolers know what you're getting in for when you buy consoles. PC == Mods; Console == Power, but limited to OnlineStore.

So....buy SI -- you will like it. It comes with KotN, so no complaints. Doesn't sound like DLC is worth the effort though.
