The Dog getting shot in the Trailer and AI

Post » Thu Aug 19, 2010 3:45 am

Dunno if this has been discussed yet. I can't see any topics about this and the search feature in these forums leaves a lot to be desired/ I hate it. If it has feel free to flame me.

The Dog in the trailer, i'm going to call him Roger, seems to come straight at us until we start to draw our bow. When we do that, albeit awkwardly, Roger seems to swerve to the side and enter into what seems to be some kind of flanking maneuver. I'm assuming Roger does this because he doesn't feel like having an arrow shot into his face. Fair enough.

Now this to me already seems to be a lot smarter than Oblivion enemies, if you consider not charging blindly at an enemy who has the obvious intention of shooting you in the face smart. So it seems some AI has finally joined us in Tamriel.

Thoughts?

Every thing you fought in Oblivion tried to run behind you to attack. That dog in the video was probably doing the same thing. Get close and circle around. It gets old.

No they didn't. They just ran at you.

I'm going with this, because

1: It behaved about like a canine in Oblivion attacking- I mean, I was mentally tracking as if I was the shooter, and he made every swerve where I predicted an Oblivion canine would.

and,

2: That's actually more encouraging to me than our first hint of semi-smart AI in Skyrim being a video of a dog recognizing a weapon and taking evasive action.

dog?

you mean the WOLF?

wolves arent dogs.

my thoughts are that you should probably stay away from the wilderness, or you might mistake a bear for a cat.

i dont think we should worry too much, they said the AI is better, and maybe at E3 we'll see another video showing some of the AI...

...hopefully it wont be like oblivion's, where everything they show gets taken out.

yeah, that little mistake of theirs is gonna fill the air for years to come.

I was just playing Oblivion earlier. Nothing does this. Ok maybe it was because I was in an Oblivion gate and Dremora and Scamps don't do this but I'm pretty sure most other enemies didn't either. They may strafe around you a bit but only like 30 degrees and then back the other way.

Seeing that the dragon fights are going to be extremely epic, I imagine other AI fights will be pretty kewl as well.

To tell you the truth that the wolves in real life won't care if you have gun and will charge you but once you get a shot off and kill one them......that is when they think about the situation.

Don't know what you were looking at but Animals in oblivion would path to you on hills, they cant run straight at you on hills. so they would run vertical then horizontal, no different in the trailer. stop seeing things you want to see and wait for the game to get a proper grip

Pretty sure they just ran at you then maybe try and circle around but only once they had touched noses with you.

Would you like me to change it to wolf in case anybody doesn't understand?

No

Not worried mate was actually happy

In Tamriel wolves have seen it all before

I think what was actually happening was "incidental circling." If you moved laterally at all, at some point a lunge would send them past you and result in your being attacked from behind.

Still think Roger was pretty much acting as an Oblivion canine though, nothing about his charge seemed unusual to me.

Is the AI in the XBox version of Oblivion different from the PC version? Nothing in Oblivion ever did anything other than running at me in a straight line, and attacking in an equally intelligent manner.

I think the reason he didn't run straight towards you is that they have some behavioral qualities now. I forget where I read it but someone said that everything goes through these separate behavioral actions before they attack

No but again, Oblivion did have quirky pathing issues even on slight inclinations, and until proven otherwise its safe to assume Skyrim may suffer from the same issues. the wolf wasn't circling when you look at it, he's just turning. I was going to appluad the animations but becuase of how short the scene was I couldnt decide if his body was turning in succession organically or on pivoting on point like in Oblivion :teehee:

Why are people trying so hard to say that Skyrim is crap. Just enjoy the pre-release wait, and stop [censored]ing about every little detail in the trailer, screen shots.

(Not personally singe-ling you out bro)
