the dovahkiin battlecry

Post » Mon Jul 25, 2011 4:51 pm

I keep reading about disgust in the "battlecry" after the PC slew the frost dragon in the demo.
and people saying things like "why did he do that" "who does that"

and then I see people saying things like "oh skyrim needs more vikings and barbaric things"
so, I will ask this, Have you ever felt an adrenaline rush from physical contact?
or beating overwhelming odds?

I'm pretty sure if you had just fought two dragons and won you would be pretty freaking pumped

not to mention absorbing dragon souls... who knows what kind of high that gets you

I thought it was badass, i've never quite understood why people had such a big problem with it.
Then again i'm strange so...

YES. THIS is the exact scene I thought of when I saw the Dovaahkiin do the battlecry thing after killing the dragons. That scene in highlander (after he finally kills his archenemy) is still just as amazing as it was all those years ago.

Yeah, I would do that. I would especially shout my anointed-by-the-gods title so the world would know of my fame and greatness. It would be like being a harbinger of fate.

Or after a successful speech check or barter.

If you're talking about the bit where he shouts out "DOVAHKIIN" ... I hate it. I couldn't actually believe it was part of the game at first, and honestly thought it was just something added onto the end of the demo for effect.

It sounds SO lame. The voice sounds horrible - sort of like an American who's not quite through puberty.

The whole point of not having a voiced player-character is so that the player can imagine who their character is, what their voice is like, what their personality is like, etc. That battlecry just destroys all that.

If it is an actual feature of the game, it'll absolutely be the first thing I mod out. Before I even start playing through the game.

I have absolutely nothing against the concept of battle cries, it is a little odd that I wouldn't get to choose when my character does it, but then again, I don't get to choose if my character cries out in pain from being attacked either, so there you go.

well, honestly I thought it sounded like something from an ANIME,

but I thought it was like a triggered effect for the demo

I respect your opinion but keep in mind that you cant say this sounds like an american because there is alot of accents in the US. from New york accent to southern and more. Still the shout is probaably there for the demo.

I must say I sort of agree with ya. I shudder to think how a female Bosmer or even a male Altmer is going to sound.

Yell "HUZZAH!" in a snowy, mountainous region?
... followed by "AVALANCHE!"

*shrug* Couldn't care less if people are whining about it, you know? It sounds cool, but more importantly it makes sense in the context. A totally silent protagonist isn't believable...I mean I don't want like BioWare style dialogue in this game, but after vanquishing to massive and beastly foes and then absorbing their souls, I'd expect a least a cheer.

Makes it feel more real, adds a connection between the player and the character (both of you experiencing an adrenaline rush and elation after an intense battle).

Nothing wrong with it

I still don't get why he would choose to yell "DOVAHKIIN!", "Dovahkiin" is his title, it's who he is. You wouldn't see someone yell "I AM ROB FROM ACCOUNTINGGGGG!!!!!"

edit: Or it would be like me, after winning a fight, yelling "JERZEYCJ!!!!!!!"

I think that was there just to close out the demo. When Dovahkiin slays the first dragon he doesn't do it, although it could be because he was in first person.

I'm going to purposely get in a fight at school, kick someone's ass, and yell "JOEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!" It won't be cool, in fact it would just be awkward for everyone. This is exactly how I feel when Dovakiin yells "Dovakiin!"
