The dumbest things your character has ever done

Post » Mon Jul 05, 2010 12:25 pm

Interested in knowing what are some things that you have done in Oblivion that looking in retrospect, were very stupid. Me for example, not long after I had first bought the game I would sometimes kill innocent npcs either just for the heck of it or accidentally getting caught by them stealing. After the killing was done I would see the message up top that "your actions have been observed by forces unknown". I would be like "oh [censored] the so called "nine" saw what I did and our going to punish me for it" *reload save before murder*. Months later a friend told me that was the way to gain entrance into the darkbrotherhood ....... DOH!

I had an almer mage, a powerfull character, not beaten in combat... however every trap would get steped on, instant death everytime.
Once tried to leap a small distance after clearing a fort of marauders and goblins.. failed seemed to smack their head on the edge of the walkway, collapsed to the floor..
Got up and set the dart gun trap they were stood right in the middle of killing themselves, Reloaded they walked straight into a wrecking ball!!

Can′t think of stuff my character has done that was stupid. I have done one thing however and that was not to heavily upgrade my computer before even installing Oblivion

Haha yeah I have had a mage and low health,amore rated, stealth character and they were both like that. I remember the time I encountered my very first Oblivion trap. I had no idea they existed before this btw. It was in the escaping sewers quest and it was the tripwire and the 3 spikked logs attatched to chains swing down and fall. Anways, I sneak shot instakilled the goblin and I went to procede about my buisiness and I hear this twang and I'm like "huh?" And all the sudden a giant wooden block plows into my face and sense my char flying across the room limp and dead. And when it hit me I had like a mini heart attack no lie.

Back when I first played Oblivion for the first time, I got a poison apple and thought mmm surely there it won't really kill me, I mean I can heal it surely, the answer as you all know was no.... one dead elf

Some of my characters have had no problem with doing that. Soul gems are all over the place, and A's Star only holds one soul at a time anyway.

My "dumbest thing" may be happening now; it remains to be seen. I recently posted something here to the extent of "Just about any kind of character build could work in this game, except maybe Altmer Barbarian with an Apprentice Birthsign -- that would just be too weird." Well, guess who just walked out of the Prison Sewer! :wink_smile:

My character had a lot of armor to sell to Varel Morvayn at Peacemaker's in Anvil. To get a better price I always use my captivate spell on the merchant. I thought that's what I had loaded -- but it was a fireball instead. :flamethrower:

dumb. :D

These r good examples, but I am positive i can compete w/ great chances of winning DOH Trophy:

- approaching an important quest-giver, left-clicking the mouse and shooting an arrow, instead of pressing the space-bar ... just to hear "STOP RIGHT THERE, CRIMINAL SCUM!" from a nearby imperial guard;

- Collector quest: an Ayeleid Statue, when u first look at it, looks like that support for weylind stones but empty. So I cleared the dungeon (a small one gladly), search for the damned thing, not realising it was right in front of me... and left the ruin, cursing about some sort of bug and abandoning the quest (till much later I saw on the uesp website what the statue looks like indeed);

- forgetting to check on repair hammers BEFORE entering a three-level dungeon full of goblins: I was about to enter the LAST level of a quest to rid goblns (JIm or whatnots), saved and thought "let's keep that bow sharp and ready", only to realise I had no hammers (and the crap weapons goblins had, ha ha, try using them with STR 30 and blunt blade <20);

- As if the above was not enough, I had decided to 'give it a try', u know... Maybe a silver-bow with health 11 can be enough, if I sneak and engage only when necessary... Besides, I was looking very much down on going back two levels, travel to a city, just to buy hammers and redo the whole damned dungeon tour... which was enough to render me 3 more dead monsters, 4 or 5 reloads and the experience of what not to do...

Renee Gade II entered the epic fight with Umaril with like 3 health potions. And she had been collecting this huge assortment of invisibility and health potions (dozens of them) but I was too lazy to go grab all this stuff from her 3 houses before the actual fight. :facepalm:

Dumbest thing? Toss up between getting locked in Falcar's room during the Cheydinhal Mages Guild Recommendation, and wearing an amulet with Reflect Damage during Molag Bal's quest.

Fell out of the tower at Battlehorn Castle. There was a monster below, and I was casting fireballs at it for fun. Trying to avoid splash damage in case I missed, I moved closer to the edge. Too close. Was also once killed by a Daedroth I summoned. Oops!

The first Oblivion gate I came across, I was going through it. Boy did I laugh later when I figured how to go in.

Haha very nice, I had a similar problem but withen a few seconds noticed the "Press X to enter" thing :P I remember once time in the first gate I was running along some path and stopped and turned left to admire the replica of hell basically only to be sent barreling into the lava ahead via the all knowing when a person is walking by boulders of DOOM. I was still new to the whole trap thing in Oblivion. Each trap has scared the hell out of me when I trigger it. Now it doesn't even bother me, its like *activates the 30 wall arrow trap* *heals heals heals* *carry on* I wish you could activate the traps without being near them. For example, I wish you could shoot the giant wooden block with spikes at the rope that's holding it to the ceiling or whatever and it comes just a swinging down. Cause a lot of the time enemies are nea4 the traps and if activated would affect them too.

How about pressing the autorun key when all you want is move just one tiny step ahead to avoid being detected?

Also, forgetting to leave sneak mode and activate conversation with a guard, so you are actually stealing from him *in broad daylight right in plain sight*.

well, once on my dark elf mage, i "accidentally" blew up one of the apprentices with a fireball. anyway, i go to raminus, he goes on about getting reagents and such, and says i need to get 20 vampire dust and 20 daedra hearts. well, then i realized i'd have to actually get farther than going to chorrol to complete the main quest. so first i get the 20 vampire dust. then i get about 9 daedra hearts, and randomly decide to talk to raminus. "you have been reinstated in the guild, evoker. also here's your promotion." so i then realize i didn't have to get any daedra hearts at all. DOH

. . . getting locked in Falcar's room during the Cheydinhal Mages Guild Recommendation. . .

Yeah, that happened to me to--had to go back to an earlier save.

Ate a poison apple accidentally

Chased a glow-dust down a huge mountain side--it must have looked hilarious to onlookers. I stayed just out of reach and kept going and going. I finally got it but then I never bothered to do the Azura's shrine thing anyway.

Accidentally put up my fists in front of my unicorn mount and was promptly killed by same unicorn in a crazed rage.

Oh how annoying this is... u kill sth, wanna check the left overs, but it is going down, down, down... u cant aim right and activate inventory, and sometimes u just realise u r somewhere too steep and kinda die....

Probably either accidentally stealing a fork and getting promptly arrested or taking a bite out of a delicious apple without thinking... :dead:

Trying to take on the Underfryike Matron at Level 1 with a wood elf :facepalm: :facepalm:

One time during the final quest of the thieves guild I forgot to save and I got caught in a glitch and I had to repeat everything I lost an hour and a half of data. I reloaded an earlier save and I got the quest done in 15 minutes.

My 1st time taking on Umbra after I beat her and I got her sword I didn't realize that you could repair Magical Equipment with Repair Hammers if you got your Armorer skill up to 50 so I was paying 1800 gold a pop for it to be repaired :banghead:

I was riding on a horse and tried to climb over a rock and instead fell through it and couldn't get out until my horse had been killed by a mountain lion. (I did try to dismount.) Then I ran back into the same rock and got stuck in it again.

I then couldn't get out and summoned a creature and tried to kill it to see if it would push me out. It killed me and I then had to load a save that was 4 hours ago.

I have been locked in Falcar's room before but I just quick-waited a few hours till he came back for bed time and I slipped out just as he oppened and was closing the door. One time (I think it was Vilverine) I pushed this button and it raised a slab of concrete up to reveal a zombie and a Vicente Valtiere type sleeping slab looking thing. I dispatched the zombie and was feeling ballzy so I went back out of the like 5 by 5 tomb that was hidden and I pressed the button and ran in just to see if it was really possible to get stuck and if there was any kind of way out, there wasn't :( .......

I was trying to work out my Acrobatics skill one day. So I found a nice rocky hillside to jump around on. Was having fun, getting into the whole rythm of things, and forgot to watch where I was going... and bailed myself off a cliff. Of course, this had to happen at a time when I had forgotten to save in awhile.

First time I found the unicorn, I promptly attempted to take it into battle.

Stupidly, I murdered someone just for fun... with Martin at my side. That didn't go over too well.

Playing through the MQ and all other quests that suit my role with a 200000 bounty and large infamy rating, with a weak to frost character..
Martin as an escort and mods that increase guard patrols on the road, I spent more time smashing in martins face for revenge, than actually escorting him!
Pretty funny how all the npc's talk about how great you are, with scowling hate filled features, good thing my character can't understand their words or it would be immersion killing.
