So, the Dwemer are back!

Post » Tue Feb 15, 2011 10:56 pm

I'm glad the Dwemer have returned for this installment of the Elder Scrolls. They're by far the most unique rendering of 'dwarves' that I've come across. And aIthough haven't really played Morrowind much, at least compared to Oblivion, the Dwemer have made up one of my favorite parts of lore. So, in a way, this is almost like a in-game introduction to the Dwemer for me. And I'll be glad to see them in the graphics-fest that Skyrim promises to be.

But...

But...

But...

What about the Falmer? They were always the group of ancient peoples that I most expected to be featured in Skyrim (as the Dwemer featured in Morrowind, and the Ayleids featured in Oblivion). But, with all the released material.. Not a single mention. Or even a screenshot (at least, as far as I am aware).

So, as of now, I'm a little worried that they might not make a showing. Or at least they'll be overshadowed by the awesomeness of their Dwemer cousins.

Do you think the Falmer will feature in Skyrim? What are you expecting from the Falmer department? Much? Much less?

Meh, I prefer that the mysterious parts of TES be kept vague, a few mentions in books, a tomb or two maybe, but just having ruins scattered all over the place removes the subtlety.

I don't have a problem with considering the Falmer and the Rieklings of Bloodmoon as one and the same.

I don't think Beth would just push aside somehting as important as the extinction of an entire race, there will be Falmer ruins for sure, maybe not a lot but there will be some.

I wonder who would win in a war. The Dwemer with their mechanical armies or Ayleids with their incredible magic and endless armies of Daedra and Undead. Oh well hehe. We will see dwemer ruins but I don't think they will explain the Dwemer in as much detail as Morrowind.

I was wondering the same thing, I know that the ruins (or at least the dwarven sphere things) are returning but are you saying that the dwarves themselves are making an appearance?

In talking about sounds, you get to see the animation (and hear the sound) of a Sphere Centurion 'transforming'.

EDIT: There were also hints before this. Some map markers on the blurry Skyrim map from the Bethesda Studios tour had names that looked quite Dwemer. Another hint was dropped by Todd Howard when he spoke of 'dwarven' ruins built into the side of mountains (or something of the sort).

Oh, I'm not talking about meeting them in the flesh.. Just, ruins, artifacts, lots of new lore, related quests, etc. With the exception of Yagrum in Morrowind, neither the Dwarves nor Ayleids actually appeared in these games. Just the remnants of them (ghosts, liches, their material world...)

Yeah and I quite enjoy the sound animation as they transform. I think being the sound guy would be a very interesting job.

I believe on page 49 of the Game Imformer article the middle picture showed some pretty unique looking ruins, maybe these are Falmer ruins? the text to the picture said that Skyrim had crumbling ruins and ancient cites perhaps hinting that there may be more than just the Dwemer ruins?

Even Todd called them "dwarves" WHAT ARE THEY NOW? epic super intellegent beings who can wield Magick and Steel with impunity, or lackluster stereotypical shortmen with over the top beards and standard Dwarf voice/culture. cmon.

The Dwemer were so interesting, they weren't dwarfs by any means and lived among GIANTS, the lived under and above ground in sprawling Dwemeri steel dominated cities across all of Resdayn, they were what the other races seemingly fail to be. INTERESTING, everyone else were barbaric rock smashers......

(I kidd I kidd the other races are beyond awesome)

If you take apart an old wooden cog clock you'll know how hard the mechanical aspect of this device encompasses. In morrowind I would just outrun these creepy clanKy and slow contraptions, why would I want to smash something so interesting?

I'm sorry, these look like exactly the same thing to me.

But I don't see any reason why they can't have both Falmer and Dwemer ruins. It's just another tileset and maybe a few different enemy types.

Just because there are ruins doesn't mean that there will be actual dwemer, there were dwemer ruins and machines in Morrowind too.

Dwarves in TES don't have to be the typical dwarf. The reason the Dwemer are referred to as "dwarves" is because that is what the giants of skyrim called them even though the dwemer are normal sized elves. Just because they are called Dwarves doesn't mean they have to be short, this is our mythos and not Tolkiens. Also, the dwemer don't wield magic with impunity, that's Ayleids hehe.

Maybe resurrecting the workings of dwemer contraptions to help bring Alduin down? I don't know, could be interesting I guess.

That's what I'm saying, I don't want lots of new stuff, its stops being the "mystery of the disappearance of...".
If there's crap scattered all over the place for us to discover, how has it remained a mystery for so long?

I think they can add much more to the tone of the story of the Falmer if they stick to around the same amount of info presented in Bloodmoon (obviously new information, but like Todd said in the interview, just because an in game book says something about the Falmer, that doesn't make it the truth)

Actually, the Lore says that we have next to NOTHING on the Falmer. Even finding ruins and artifacts would contradict that, unless the ruins were just found in the last 200 years or something. I am pretty certain we will learn new info about the Falmer, but I'm guessing its going to be a lot more mysterious than sporadically placed ruins and such.
