The Elder scrolls and what does it mean to you

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 10:12 am

I remember reading a game issue of gameplay magazine few years ago when they originally announced Oblivion's new AI, presented new graphic engine etc. I was simply amazed how it looks, what Bethesda did promised and couldnt believe there will be another TES after Morrowind. The PC's at that time just got theyre first double core processors and were sky high expensive so I couldnt afford one, neither a whole new PC. So I decided to buy a Xbox360, which I did and spent around 850$ at that time or whatever the starting price was for Xenon models, and I was blown away with Oblivion in every way possible, and I love this game so much, that was my reason of purchasing the console simply for Oblivion, and I havent regret a thing!

Today it's 2011. Skyrim is really close to its release date and I can see and feel the vibe of community buzzing around these forums more than ever, its another TES game just around the corner, and that old feeling of expectations and excitement is coming to life. Unfortunately X360 is old, and I wanted to see Skyrim in its full glory, I doubt I could do that on Phenom 9650(2.3 Ghz) Radeon 4870 with 512 RAM, and 4 gigs of DDR2!

But somehow history repeats itself in a wierd way, because my PC just got fried 2 days ago, or one day before paycheck! :/

Needless to say my family is going to kill me but yeah I spent around 900$ on new PC rig, and I just cant wait any longer for Skyrim :)

I just wanted to ask you guys and girls, has similar thing happened to you, and what is your story of getting into TES universe?!

Oblivion was my first TES game, due to a suggestion from a friend of mine. It had been out for about a year or so, and was thus relatively cheap to pick up, so I thought "what the hell" and bought it. Glad I did!

Well I was quite young, I guess Morrowind had just come out and my dad said he'd picked a game up for me and my older brother (I was 11 at the time), something he'd never done before(or since). It turned out to be Morrowind. Back then our PC's were my dads old work computers so they could barely run the game, but it was worth it, Morrowind turned out to be one of my favourite games of all time.

Oblivion was like the second coming for me,I was so hyped and spent every day on this forum drooling over screenshots, and yea, basically overhyped myself. When the game finally came I was sorely disapointed... but overall my TES experiences have been quite mixed.

My ex was into Daggerfall, so when Morrowind was announced he followed it and I got interested through him. Loved Morrowind, liked Oblivion a lot, can't wait for Skyrim :)

After playing Oblivion on my ps3 for the first time, i went to the old games (Daggerfall, Arena) and now it's my favorite series of all time.

I moved. And got some new friends, when I visited them they were playing Oblivion. So it has it so that I got Oblivion and I have a higher level character than them now. :toughninja:

Had been playing NWN and some friends in my PnP RPG group told me about MW and how much better than NWN it was and I'm glad to say they were right.

Definitely a sign by the gods.

I started with Morrowind, although I don't really remember how. But the art style appealed to me in a way no other game ever did. As did the lore after I spent hundreds of hours in Vvardenfell. The Elder Scrolls is probably my defining fantasy universe, as it was the deepest and most complex I knew at the time, and everything else must compare to it.
To this day, Morrowind is the only game I've ever considered a 10 out of 10. It influenced my following gaming and fantasy experiences that much.

I had seen an advertisemant for Arena somewhere, used to be a role playing geek, thought I would give it a try. Been with the Elder Scrolls from the beginning and regret none of it - the freedom to explore, discovering something and wondering what happened or just marveling at the beauty of a Morrowind sunrise. All of this and more is what TES means to me.

I recall playing Daggerfall soon after it came out. Bought Morrowind to xbox when it came out and played Oblivion on my pc. Don't have the xbox anymore but I still have Morrowind. :D
I've always been into rpg's (Anyone remember those AD&D golden boxed games? Pool of Radiance etc.)

Give me Skyrim already!

A buddy of mine basically became a recluse and played Morrowind every second he could for about 3 straight months.

I didn't hear from him or hear anything about him for quite a while so I decided to go over to his place and see what was up.

I ended up watching him play for about 10 minutes and decided I'd give it try, turned out to be my favorite game of all time.

My best friend's (at the time) older brother always played Morrowind with his friends when I was there and I used to sit and watch. Got a new computer for christmas, bought the game, played it forever. This was -02/-03, I was 12-13.

I was actually introduced to Morrowind while searching for Baldur's Gate II mods. This was in 2009 or 2010 so it probably is a bit odd that I started with Morrowind, but I used to have a bad opinion of newer games since all the newer ones I had played had uninteresting storylines and boring gameplay; probably because all my friends play games like Halo and Call of Duty, which really are just not my type of game.

After starting up Morrowind and playing it for a bit, I realized this was the type of game I had always wanted: an rpg where I can do pretty much whatever I want, whether it is stealing, killing, becoming a vampire or werewolf, or being good and helping people. I think what really got me into Morrowind was mods though; I found a large modding community as well as thousands of mods and these mods allowed me to fix all the things that annoy me and even add things that I wanted. I had previously used mods in Baldur's Gate, but it had a very limited selection of mods compared to Morrowind.

I had heard of Oblivion before I tried Morrowind, but I had always dismissed it as just another boring game with pretty graphics. After trying Morrowind I gave Oblivion a chance though and I loved it. I did have a few problems with it of course, but I fixed all these things with mods and now modded Oblivion is easily one of my favorite games. Now I plan on trying Skyrim too and I am pretty confident that I will enjoy it as well.

So while I am kind of new to playing The Elder Scrolls compared to a lot of people here, this series does mean more to me than other games I have played do. The Elder Scrolls is what got me to give newer games a chance as well as what got me to start using mods.

To be honest with you, I don't care much for Arena, Daggerfall, Battlespire, or Redguard. Once Bethesda got kicked in the nuts and realized they needed to concentrate their resources on one project at a time, they emerged as present day's RPG heavyweight.
To quote Todd Howard: "Usually franchises are hurt by putting out a [censored] game."

Well, I had seen Morrowind on the gamestop shelf for a long time in 2003, and I had just finished some other fantasy game and thought "well, it's fourteen bucks, may as well give it a try."

So I bought it and my mind got blown out my ears. Most fantasy that wasn't The Lord of the Rings I had seen up until that point in my life was just a ripoff of The Lord of the Rings, and Morrowind got me to realize that truly boundless awesomeness of fantasy.

Therefore, I resolved to myself become a fantasy writer. Seriously, I did. That link in my signature (that all y'all should read and share with all your friends) is the first publicly viewable fruit of that endeavor, and several others have been very politely rejected by editors of fiction magazines.

Would I be considered weird if I said the lore is probably more important to me than the actual games themselves?
Its just all so incredibly fascinating and encourages me to read up on philosophy, numerology, myths, legends, fairytales and folklore.
Its just so mesmerisingly complex.

I am so incredibly looking forward to find out what happened in the 200 years between Skyrim and Oblivion and I really hope we will get more insight into the daily lives and customs of the Dwemer.

Kind of, it was really a few games that fell on my head which I had to put back (including Morrowind :P ). But after looking at Morrowind again I decided to buy it. Best game buying decision of my life :D Oh and it hurt  . I think the other two games, one was might and magic for blood and honer and one of the SWAT games, cant remember which.

To this day, Morrowind is the only game I've ever considered a 10 out of 10. It influenced my following gaming and fantasy experiences that much.

I agree, a legend of a game!

I started on Morrowind. My cousin introduced me to it. I was addicted. To the point where I almost couldn't stop playing it. Then came Oblivion. Since I had played Morrowind already I was SUPER psyched. And I certainly wasn't let down by the game. I loved it. And now I"m sitting her in anticipation waiting ever so impatiently for midnight. Because Skyrim is going to be the S-H-I-T!!
