That's because it isn't anywhere. It is completely out of print, so the only "legal" way to acquire it is to buy used (Amazon and Ebay typically have a few available... though I wonder at times how many of those are legit and how many are merely cleverly designed forgeries). To the best of my knowledge, gamesas has exactly zero interest in releasing this title to the public ever again.

Fixed. Pete Hines has said explicitly that they have no plans to ever release Daggerfall in any form.

What you can find, however, and free is the Daggerfall demo, which is quite excellent for a demo and will really give you a feel for the full game.

Just wondering, why don't they want to release the game again?

Perhaps because they don't want to face questions about why the initial intention of fantasy-world-simulating was distilled down to toy-worlds with little difference in scale to some 3D-shooters?

They would have to get it to work on new computer systems to actually "release" it. It's an impossible task.

If people could get past DF's graphics and actually play the game for a bit, it would definitely raise some questions.

I'd like to see them open source it, like id Software has done with the Doom and Quake games. Some of us would love to get into the engine and modernize it for newer systems, getting it running again without the need for DOSBox or something, adding hw accel, etc. That way, it can be updated to work better on today's machines for people, and they get more sales from people buying it to use the engine modifications with.

It could cause an awesome fan-schism in the Elder Scrolls community - splitting the fans between the Morrowind/Oblivion players and the people who really enjoy Daggerfall's depth and have come to question why Bethesda is oh-so subtly reducing the amount of content in each subsequent game.

In other words, it'd end in global thermonuclear war.

Have they confirmed yet if they still have the source code? Did they destroy the rumor that they lost it in the move?

If they havent yet then it makes me ask some questions....

I read somewhere that it was a licensing issue with 3rd-party sound or something... whatever the reason, BS have been very open about their intentions.

I'm relieved to note that the rumours regarding the loss of the Daggerfall source code could be false :celebration:

In good time...

I think 'the source code loss' is just a legend spread by someone who most probably emitted it as a supposition. The problem is that it was (and still is a lot) taken as a fact by the community...

Or now that John Carmack may have access to the source code, he could rewrite the engine. :D

Daggerfall on the Quake engine. :ahhh:
(That'd actually be pretty good in terms of optimization, only real concerns would be with the open wilderness and particle system.)

Anyway, since Bethesda hasn't said a single thing on the status of the source code, I just assume they either really lost it or they're being stubborn [censored]s who don't want to share their older work with today's generation.

Yeah, just like Arena.

Erm... what was the question? :P

That'd be pretty typical. There's quite a few games out there the licensing for which are held in pieces by two or three completely different companies. The US (and world, for that matter) copyright system is completely screwed up.

As I said, I'm not sure if this is the issue that stops them re-releasing DF (or if it is an issue with DF at all!), but to elaborate on the point:
BS would need to pay someone a license fee for a game they'd be either giving away or selling at a very low cost.

Arena wasn't re-released, it was put up to download for free. There's a difference. Hence why I put the word "release" in quotes.

The lost source code issue is probably one of the big problems, too.

I just figured out the real reason! :lightbulb: It's because they can't port it to the xbox.

well from what i remember it was some problems with the rights to the sound-system Good Old Bethesda used in Daggerfall, but i am also sure i read that that company who owned it died some years ago.

i guess they want us to forget the Good Old Bethesda and embrace this new..."Bethesda".

but i have heard of rumours about someone is "remaking" Daggerfall with better textures and whatnot, so hope is not lost.

heh, the guy already made his presence known here.

I'd like to see Bethesda put it up as a free download, as they done with Arena.

I honestly wonder how much money they could have made if they released again as a normal game.....
