maybe I am misremembering then, but I was sure when asked "hey, is FO4 coming out?" within 2 years prior to its announcement he gave a very similar "we have lots of things in the works, don't expect it anytime soon" response

Bethesda Game Studios Montreal is helping Bethesda Game Studios Maryland develop the The Elder Scrolls Legends card video game as well as Fallout Shelter and Fallout 4 for Virtual Reality (VR).
That Starfield trademark is my guess that Bethesda Game Studios Maryland is developing and will release for sale in 2018 or 2019, then in 2023 or so Bethesda Game Studios Maryland will release for sale The Elder Scrolls VI, while Bethesda Game Studios Montreal will release maybe Fallout 5 in 2020 or 2021 for sale.
That is my guess judging by the way they are working on their current projects and future projects.
Actually this is what he's talking about IGN reported that here:
I would not be surprised if another Fallout title wasn't already being at least in the developmental stages, if Chris Avellone is writing for the new edition of PREY, why not also another Fallout story, probably somewhere other than the eastern seaboard. That being said, I think we'll see the new IP first.... probably in 2018.
Next year BGS will be hyping the VR version of FO4, and their smaller projects, plus a teaser for the new IP. But I got that from Mama Murphy, so interpret that as you will....
i think you may be misinterpreting it, I believe they meant "the last on the to do list" of the three projects (as in the last of the three projects to be released), not that it will be the last TES game
Threads merged and moving to the TES forum.
Remember, if you want to discuss the gameplay ideas/suggestions, etc please use the Beyond Skyrim thread.
Yeah ign.com misinterpreted it I guess.
Todd Howard specifically said that he is not working on The Elder Scrolls VI right now and that it's coming just many years away from now and that it is not the last The Elder Scrolls video game.
He told that to Geioff Keighly if I heard right.
I was also considering that as well BUT that is not how it was listed on that article which, again, was where the confusion is at
hypothetically speaking though, if TES6 was the last TES (which I am sure it won't be), it better be Landfall, go out with a bang
I doubt it will happen, but I would absolutely love a remastered 64 bit Dx11 Oblivion engine.
Probably. I do recall them saying something similar -- that it would be a long time before the next elder scrolls and they had no present plans for one -- about a year before Skyrim was announced. Than all of a sudden, not really all that long after the "very long time" announcement, Skyrim was announced.
I would take the whole "very long time" thing with a grain of salt. For all we know, a "very long time" could mean an announcement next year and than a six month wait for release. Or it could be much longer than that. It's all just speculation at this point. A "very long time" means we are not getting TES VI this year, but it does not necessarily mean anything one way or the other beyond that.
I doubt that, they'd have to completely remake Oblivion and Fallout 3 for this to happen.
So if it's not even VR (since VR is already fairly ambitious), and the projects are "bigger than anything (they've) done"... then it sounds incredibly ambitious. I wonder if it will fundamentally change the ES series, the way Morrowind changed it.
And it's a PR spin they've used several times in the past.
Guys don't put too much faith in the comments making TESVI Ambitious we've seen this before by devs and they fall flat on their butts being incorrect. Until Bethesda completely uses a brand new engine it's not going to be that big.
This...really svcks if it's going to end up not coming out till 2018 or even 2019. It'll be the absolute longest time between a TES release, ever.
Arena: 1994
Daggerfall: 1996
Morrowind: 2002
Oblivion: 2006
Skyrim: 2011
The previous longest gap was between Daggerfall and Morrowind, at 6 years, but with "two projects to go before TES VI", it seems very, very unlikely we'll see it in 2017, which will make it a 7 year gap. And if the two other projects are actually significant projects, it's quite possible we won't see it until 2019, which would be an 8 year gap. Kinda shoddy way to treat the fanbase of the game series that literally put your company on the map.
Longer than that. It's two major projects before TES VI. Which I take to mean full scale AAA games. I wouldn't expect the first of those to be before 2018 at the earliest, the second one a few years after that, and TES VI a few years after that. Given that the tech isn't available or mature enough to do what they want to do for TES VI, it's going to be a while yet before they can even start full development.
But we do have acknowledgement that TES VI is in the planning stages.
Well they once advertised Creation as a brand new engine so I wouldn't hold my breath
Two projects bigger than anything they've ever done, and then TES.
Well, what hasn't Bethesda done yet?
They are obviously dabbling in VR, and they have their fingers on the pulse of the industry, but to be frank VR isn't nearly as big as it should be to warrant a company making a AAA title just for it. Maybe when the Scorpio is out, and the PlayStation VR has had some years under it's belt we'll see some dedicated VR games, but right now everyone's kind of just sitting around and waiting for the first person to jump into the pool.
What ever is in works could literally be anything, but we can to look at what his team has experience with, though even that could be irrelevant as he states these projects are huge.
I'll put a large amount of money on only one of them being VR, and only because it has to come after the other; By then VR could actually have two legs to stand on and be a viable medium to develop for.
They said three projects a few months ago, right? Maybe one of them was the Skyrim remaster, and that's pretty much wrapping up. My guess is that Howard's talking about their studio and the Montreal studio collectively, since they're working together on projects. One of them is definitely mobile - Todd Howard outright said in the post-show interview they're going to do more mobile stuff. The other might just be Fallout 4 VR. The optimist in me wants to say they're really upgrading the technology for VI so that it's perfect for VR right out the gate - which should be helpful for the non-VR version.
