The Elder Scrolls MMORPG

Post » Fri Nov 18, 2011 3:56 pm

I don't want to spend my time in an Elder Scrolls game filled with characters called Paladinlol, Rougekiller, Lég?làs, Epichealz and Sephirothxx running around calling people "noobs" and mocking other players for having worse gear than them.

Ne'er have truer words been uttered.

No because making elder scrolls online or have pvp will turn it into a mix-maxing game that focuses more on balance and less on story and fun.

At most you can only ask for some co-op feature, or some dungeon crawler. Turning it into a MMO will ruin the game series.

I've always felt TES games would work well with a in a multiplayer environment however back with Oblivion they stated that they would not do it as it would detract from the scope they can put out.

No from past experiences. I loved the warcraft series, but it was completely destroyed when it became an MMO.

MMO? No not in a million years I like to take my time explore and experiance the world. Co-op would be nice I would love to explore the world with my brother (who also loves TES) it always better to talk about shared expirences than try to explain what happened retrospect.

There's a reason MMORPGs have such a high failure rate, it's the hardest game type to create because of the huge investment required in backbone infrastructure, technical support, billing, customer support, along with various other personnel. It doesn't really matter how good such and such a games lore would be for an MMO if the studio isn't setup for supporting and maintaining an mmo-type game.

I also facepalm when I see Blizzard mentioned as an example, because the Blizzard model only works once you have a gargantuan subscriber-base, and trying to get to that point is why you have MMOs like Age of Conan, APB, Age of Conan, going under within months or a year of their inception. MMOs take a huge investment of capitol to get started and if you never reach that critical mass of subscribers you doom your entire company to financial ruin. Blizzard is an example of what not to do because if you remember WoWs creation it was very different from Activision-Blizzard business model we see now years later.

Don't get me wrong.. I love MMORPG's as much as the next guy but Bethesda are amazing at creating single player universes that are simply perfect to be in. I'd rather they develop elder scrolls VI or another decent rpg rather than an MMO with all the pros/cons that comes along with it. I have no doubt in my mind a MMO is coming from Bethesda though. There's too much profit from it for them to neglect it any longer imho.

i'm surprised that no one's even mentioned the fact that going down the MMO path would immediately kill off the modding potential of the game

whilst a co-op style of gameplay might be nice (similar to the torchlight2/diablo2 model of instanced channels for parties), sometimes i just want to play on my own, at my own pace.
if i was partying with someone else i'd feel a lot less willing to randomly head towards an odd structure off the main road, or try and find out what that new symbol on the compass represents.

of course the is not considering the fact that going multiplay almost inevitably means making all NPCs immortal. think of it like this, since almost any NPC can become a quest giver, and almost any NPC can become the target of an assassination quest, you'd quickly end up with people unable to complete quests.

There must be games out there already that offers 1st person / over the shoulder perspective team/party based dungeon crawling already. I'd say to play those when you get a hankering for a bit of co-op play. one thing that gamesas does best and does right is keeping their games singleplayer. we're all the hero (or villian), we're all experiencing our own stories.

With a Blizzard sized team behind The Elder Scrolls series imaine how massive and polished the game could be - I for one would pay a monthly fee.

No mmo, but mo :-)

Every time a new TES game emerges, so do these threads.

No, we don't need another online game that will inevitably fail or become "niche" (thus having the developing team abandon the project). TES is the last bastion of western single player games that are crafted around the idea of a single player experience. The reason we have such impressive visuals, handcrafted worlds and the choice between cheesy or non-cheesy gameplay is precisely the fact that this game is single player. In the name of balance and practicality, all the elements would be eliminated. Essentially, your sandbox would become a restrictive and unmoddable mess at the mercy of playerbase whining. The day TES goes online is the day I start playing JRPG's, or something else just as drastic like suicide.

its not a case of IF its a case of WHEN :)
it will happen!

i believe they will still keep to an ES single player experience but i am 99% sure there will be an ES MMORPG soon!

Pretty much this!!!

There is just far too much money to be made in MMO's for ZeniMax to ignore, especially for a game that is likely to sell millions of copies of the single player version.

I would actually love to see an ES MMORPG, providing they don't make it a WOW clone and keep the sandbox open world feel of the game. Also, they must not downgrade it to support the console crowd, if you want the MMO to work on consoles, fine go with that but don't dilute the PC version to fit inline with consoles.

At the end of the day if you don't want to play it, then just don't. I think it would be ZeniMax Online that makes it anyway with Bethesda staying on the single player version. So you will likely still get your single player fix.

Look what happened to Mortal Online.... it was as close to an TES mmo as it would get.

if you dont know what Mortal online is, i clearly made my point.

Do you think we would've known about it if it was a single-player ?

Online games get more advertising, and while I do agree that if we had 1 million Dovakiins running around would be stupid, a moderated living world in which some players are merchants, some miners and others are licensed to kill could be fine.

Kinda like a Skyrim RP server.
