The elder scrolls is over

Post » Wed Mar 23, 2011 2:42 am

Where did you get there were only five?
This is simply not true.

Besides, on the imperial library you can find a love letter from the fifth era that is considered canon.
The fourth era has just begun and we know there is going to be a fifth, so its far from over.

This particular series of prophesies is coming to the fore. Perhaps lost in all the lore is another chapter that continues on from here. Should Alduin be defeated then perhaps another prophesy, thought to have no importance, has now become valid, being triggered by Alduin's failure.

hidden in some obscure, sparsely inhabited location, there is a seemingly insane hermit, a ghost, or a secret cult of monks watching over the sword, rock, or bowl that will signal the coming of a hero to foil the plans of yet another supernatural being from outside the realm with a burning desire to destroy this upstart realm that won't bow down to their will.

But ultimately it will depend upon whether BGS and their producers want to end the series here or to continue on.

I'll bet we see another one in five or six years.

There is one thing I don't quite get though: Didn't one of the official sources (teaser, twitter, GI, etc) say that it was prophesied in the Elder Scrolls that Alduin would eat the world? I don't get that. If we actually succeed, perhaps the Elder Scrolls don't even mean anything. Like the Minority Report.

"...of night. The Elder Scolls themselves can pierce the veil. They offer a view of the flux of Time itself. The prophet who reads the scroll sees one version of what might be. Another prophet might have a different vision with equal veracity. The price for insight is the reader's sight. He is struck blind and..."

"The influences of the archivally historic Elder Scrolls cannot be understated. Once a prophesy [sic] contained in an Elder Scroll is enacted in Tamriel, the text of the parchment becomes fixed. All readers ingest the same divine message. It becomes an historical document declaring the unequivocal truth of a past event. Scholars, even those as dim-witted as Therin of Mournhold, cannot argue the bias of the writer, like he has with my earlier works. Not even magic can affect the word written upon those ancient pages."

"Adepts of our order are gifted with prescient powers. The wisdom of the ancestors can sing the future into the present. For this reason, our order and our order alone has been given the priviledge to interpret the Elder Scrolls. These writings exceed even the gods, both aedra and daedra. Such insight into the inner fabric of reality comes at a price. Each reading of the Elder Scrolls is more profound than the last. Each leaves the priest blind for longer, and longer periods of time. Finally, the last reading achieves a nearly sublime understanding of that scroll's contents, but the priest is left permanently blinded to the light of this world. No longer can he read the scrolls."

From several in-game books about the topic. Hope it clarifies things :)

The last TES will be where the entire continent of Tamriel is playable, or even Nirn, who knows.
And not only composed of random landscapes (as in Arena), but landscapes made one by one.
And as you can see, this is still far off. :disguise:

There are only 5 prophecies in the scroll and we covered them in 5 tes titles. now what?

I guess any future tes titles will be either minor events or prequels or something.

I don't understand why people think that because this game bases its prophecy around events in the last few games that it means this is the last TES game. It's not like they sat there when making Arena saying "Ok, we're going to have these things happen and then on the fifth titled game we have an epic dragon battle and that ends the Elder Scrolls games period"

Morrowind was a pile of dirt, and Oblivion a pile of red dirt and lava. But what good piles they were.

I heard there were some hidden near a bridge! A bridge frequented by billy goats! And , an illiterate, nearsighted, underbridge dwelling creature.

I see what you did there.

Even if he is trolling, nobody is really feeding him. He didn't really provoke any emotional responses. Really, everyone seemed fairly friendly in explaining to him where he was wrong.
Whatever, it's irrelevant.

There's no way that BGS will let TES die after this. As proof of that idea, just look at all the comments about Skyrim, which hasn't eve come out yet and doesn't for another 10 months! Clearly, TES is still a raising star in the game world, and so long as it continues gaining popularity, it will continue to exist.

Personally I think the whole wall thing is a cheap way to tie in the events from the previous game with that of Skyrim.

But just because those events are now suddenly connected it doesnt mean that there cant be any more events in the future.

The elderscrolls is a serie that si constantly being developed. When arena came out the lore wasnt all that clear. It is all put together and reorganized to make it make sense but that isnt always the case. Even when they came up with the title ''the elderscrolls'' they werent all that sure what the purpose of these scrolls were.

And yes like others have said WALL =/= SCROLLS.

Yeah, they could just make more walls, with more priests, and it would sell.

This is not the end of the Elder Scrolls as, aside from the obvious fact that because the current story arc is just ending (which means we'll get a new one)doesn't mean that the game series is over, there also hasn't been games in several provinces. Even mainland Morrowind could get a game, probably coupled with Black Marsh.

People also have to realize that so long as Bethesda is comitted, we'll see the Elder Scrolls becoming probably one of the longest running RPG series ever, if not the longest running ever, assuming Final Fantasy finally dies.

Don't forget Ultima. 9 episodes + a MMORPG so far+ spin off (if I remember correctly) but yeah it's dead, TES is still alive. The Zelda series (I count it as an rpg, my point of view, anyone is free to disagree)

And FF is a different thing. The only thing that remains from an episode to another are names (invocations, game title, and some cameos or stuff like that. It has a unity, but it's not the same universe each time) So we can't really compare the two.
A LOT easier to make a totally new game with some similarities and just add a number behind the title, than to actually make a real sequel.

To quote the UESPWiki:

The Elder Scrolls are Aedric Prophecies of unknown origin and quantity, the Elder Scrolls (whence the series takes its name) are, simultaneously, archives of both historic and future events.

And was I the only person to look at the wall and think: "Oh that's just a summary of the earlier games," and go on about looking at the new stuff?

you're being awfully ignorant, TES is their most popular game series... bethesda would NEVER end it so early... trust me, TES will go on for quite awhile, there will always be more lore, more prophecies, more danger, and more enemies to take down.

we can still have games focusing on all the other provinces, and even after that, there are several more lands surrounding tamriel!

i recall one time that it has been said the elder scrolls will not end anytime soon.
