The Engine and possible co-op

Post » Sat Mar 06, 2010 4:40 pm

Anyone who has read my posts of olde knows me to be a lover of the co-op feature. I play alone often enough, but I love few things more in a gaming experience than being able to share those great adventures with a friend in couch co-op. I am not really writing this to receive guff from all those loner despots out there who don't want "nobody " in their game with them no way no how. Single player is always an option, mind to your own business and we shall mind to ours. What I am wondering is if the next Elder Scrolls is running on this Unreal Engine that Bethesdas Hunted game will run on. That is a two player co-op game, however it seems to lack other RPG elements which I enjoy, primarily character customization. If Elder V IS running on that same engine, then I do indeed hope that it will allow for co-op AND have the character customization options which are a staple of the series, and which, on the face of things, the new Hunted game seems to lack. One of the most enjoyable aspects of couch co-op in Fable III is decking out your character to you desire, and then seeing what traits your partner comes up with in the companion charater. I would love to see the variances that Elder Scrolls would allow for in playing companions. I don't know whether or not it will be done. I don't want to get into an argument about why people should or should not like it. There are lots of reasons to want co-op in a game like this. There may also be reasons to want to play alone, but it is not really proper to want to see others forced to play that way if they desire a co-op alternative, especially in the drop in/drop out couch mode that would accomodate even an extensive RPG like Elder Scrolls flawlessly. The only objections of worth would be those concerning the capacity of the engine, and whether it could keep all of the other key apsects of the game (graphics, size of world, length of quests) while incorporating the co-op. As the engines become more and more powerful, and have greater and greater memory capacity, this argument against will hold less and less weight. All that said, does anyone know if this game will be on the Unreal engine?[size="3"]

I guess this can be the new multiplayer thread now that the other one is on its 11th page.

And again, I will say no to multiplayer, that is all.\

OK guys, after discussion we are opening this thread only for discussion and speculation on co-op and multiplayer. However, any MMO discussion should be posted in the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1119156-official-tes-multiplayer-thread/

Again, I hope they don't do co-op as that would require alot of coding and re-coding, I'd rather they focus their manpower in other departments and maximize the gameplay and story.

I vote yes for Multiplayer since it would add an interesting aspect to gameplay and would be very humorous indeed. It seems difficult to add multiplayer to this kind of game without a compromise.

Seeing as how buggy past games made by Bethesda have been, I think your getting your hopes up just a little too high. I have no opinion of having co-op in the game...it could be nice or it could be terrible, i dont know. But with the teams experience with Single Player only games, its safe to say that they probably dont know how to do mulitplayer (Todd's stuido anywayas). I mean, they couldnt even get ladders to work. /shrug

I vote yes to a very limited additional co-op mode or/and an Arena versus mode. Nothing else.

So negitive...so against co-op...too much "recoding" Its all new code anyway i dont feel it would be asking too much at all. Why take away the option if it is possible? If people dont want to play co-op you dont have to...its not like anyone is forcing you too. Its just fun playing with a friend.

Two Worlds 2 is coming out.

Hehehe, nice.

First, Skyrim will have its own engine, entirely unique from the Unreal engine or the Id engine. Speculate all you like on the specific details of what entails this engine, but none of us have a real clue yet - we'll likely get details from Game Informer in their February issues.

Second, say what you will about keeping the "co-op naysayers" away, but I'm not afraid to inform you that I do not support the notion of "Elder Scrolls co-op." I still remember feeling quite torn over the rumored news a few years back that Bethesda was making an Elder Scrolls MMO and do not want to return to that. While I will concede that a co-operative gameplay system would be interesting to see, I feel that it doesn't match the spirit of The Elder Scrolls whatsoever. I'd rather see it kept as a single player experience. So I've got my opinion and you've got yours. Though I won't flame you for a discussion about it in your thread - that's totally cool, in fact, I'd love to read it. Just laying my opinion out there.

But so far, anything's possible. Just don't go and get your hopes up.

If they put in a Saint's Row 2 or Borderlands style co-op then it could be amazing. Being able to go into another player's game and help them with quests or just plain go dungeon crawling. A good co-op feature can make a good game great, so if ES V had co-op features then it could potentially make this game amazing.

I don't see Elder Scrolls ever being a multi-player of any sort, for many reasons. Technical, and story ones.

I would like co-op, because I feel that Bethesda could actually pull that sort of thing off without degrading the rest of the game's quality.

Besides, people are going to complain about it anyways, might as well give them something to complain about.

I don't think theyd spring co-op on us. besides, they said on Twitter that it was an in-house designed engine. They seem to indicate that they will be using the other one for a "Stealth project." Considering the hype of ES5's release already, 11 months before, I dont think it'll be multiplayer. I do not think there should be co-op. And its not because I dont want anyone around, its cause im terribly ill, and so my ability to play reliably is compromised. Having to go between that AND convincing someone to play with me, id feel pretty much neglected. Same as I did when another numberd series came out with an MMO. Thats when I came to Elder Scrolls in earnest. Because if the gamei s multiplayer..I cant play it. And that would really, really hurt.

Besides, you know how ridiculous it would be too change everything established in ES for a multiplayer game? The whole Illusion tree would have to be removed. As would Sneaking, and anything else that relied on the computer not being you to function. If an Elder Scrolls MMO came out, it also wouldnt be in a single region. Because then itd also feel like a huge letdown to those who have enjoyed the formula since Daggerfall. This also includes your role: the unnamed hero, unmentioned by history, but whos deeds rippled through time and space more so than any others at a crucial period. That would have to go away as well.

Now, im not expressly OPPOSED to this sort of game, just that it should A) not be a numberd title, and B) contain more than one zone. Best examples would be the provincial conflicts after Martin ascended: A scaled down, less well invovled storyline in a confusing and hectic situation that crosses all states, less detailed than in a single player.

The other could be basically the same thing, but taking place wholly in Akavir. ITd be really tought to go against established lore in that place, because its still not entirely clear who the akaviri ghosts in Oblivion were...:P But for now, we know how much the devs listen to us, and while we dont always enjoy their solutions, they do find solutions for what we most want. And they know that what we dont want is ES5 to be an MMO. Im not sure how an optional co-op mode would work, but if they can seamlessly give the same level of challenge for two players that it is for one palyer, i wouldnt mind.

Another good sign is how theres no beta. Its hard to not annouce MMO plans, for exactly that reason. For other such games, they have beta playing for months after months, and still wind up with a huge number of bugs. Imagine that, but without any beta testers, and competing against a newly expanded WoW. Itd be financial suicide. Conversely, if the game keeps its long loved format, it remains at the top of single-player games, a rarity in these days. Thats a position I believe theyd like to retain, rather than take a risk with a game type that a lot of bethesda's long time fans dislike.

I dont know why people stand against multi-player or co-op if you dont want to play co-op or multi well just play single. multiplayer doesnt mean they will remove the single player option.

Assassin's creed bortherhood single player experience was even better than Assassin's creed 2 and they incorporated a multiplayer. people who dont want to play multi just dont and play single but let people who want to play multi do it.

I want this game a single player. I had my stint with MMO with Age Of Coran MP's like Cod's they get bit long on the tooth with servers full of cheats.
I want single player fun. Like Oblivion, little bit of Marrowind I played, Mass Effects, Fallouts and Borderlands (I know rewards are not great in single player then co-op) I want to take my time playing instead other players pushing me around and telling what to do.
Just concentrate on the game play and the story and don't worry about MP side of things. Have the good things from Oblivion, Marrowind and Fallout3 and make into this game.
If you make this MMO and you have the reviewers talks the game up because it a MMO that might beat WOW before the release and when comes into reviewing, it turns out to be a flop.
I don't want the same thing happen to this game like what happened to Age Of Coran. The first 20 levels is good and afterwards its a grind session and fell flat on the face.
Becareful of The Witcher 2 and Mass Effect3. They are got one thing in common (I hope for Mass Effect3) they are single player games. If those games turn out good after learning from mistakes (I hope they do) will pull the rug from underneath this game.

I guess I don't really understand that, in terms of it not matching the Spirit. I have always figured, perhaps wrongly, that the only real reasons Elder Scrolls did not offer a couch co-op were things like engine limitations and coding difficulties. But the Spirit of the game? As long as the quests are epic, the guilds are in place, the side quests are many, the NPCs are interesting, the customization is broad and the world is vast. . . I just cannot see how a drop in/drop out option for a local second player could possibly damage the spirit of anything. It would just take a game which, aweome as it is, can sometimes turn into a lonely soujourn, a more engaging, enchanting experience that can be shared with an invested friend. Epic tales are full of companions. In fact, The Elder Scrolls is full of companion quests and options. . . it is just that all of them are limited to AI. Forgive me, but in terms of comradery, a lackey from the fighters guild will never be able to compare to a real, fully customizable second player who drops into the game to share your trials and triumphs, horrors and heroics, your exploits and vast exploration, the wonders and the woes. I daresay, in a game as vast and long as Elder Scrolls, a companion player has far more value than they would in a more rudimentary game setting. :foodndrink: :whisper: :slap: :hugs:

I also like the people who are all like, "BETHESDA WOULD WASTE ALL DA CODE ON COOP AND IT WOULD TAKE ALOT CODING AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I"M TAKING ABOUT BUT BETHESDA CAN'T CODE." Or something so ignorantly stupid, Co-op would be amazing if done correctly. Just think about you and your friend(s) playing the game for the first time on opening night TOGETHER for once. It'd be amazing.

My problem with the idea of co-op is that, for every one person willing to help you or team up with you, theres some jerk off on some high ridge waiting to cheat shot you and 'tea bag' your dead avatar. I'm a bit overly serious abour RPGs, I dont want some 14 year old jerk sitting there annoying me and be a [censored] when I want to casually explore.
