I don't think theyd spring co-op on us. besides, they said on Twitter that it was an in-house designed engine. They seem to indicate that they will be using the other one for a "Stealth project." Considering the hype of ES5's release already, 11 months before, I dont think it'll be multiplayer. I do not think there should be co-op. And its not because I dont want anyone around, its cause im terribly ill, and so my ability to play reliably is compromised. Having to go between that AND convincing someone to play with me, id feel pretty much neglected. Same as I did when another numberd series came out with an MMO. Thats when I came to Elder Scrolls in earnest. Because if the gamei s multiplayer..I cant play it. And that would really, really hurt.
Besides, you know how ridiculous it would be too change everything established in ES for a multiplayer game? The whole Illusion tree would have to be removed. As would Sneaking, and anything else that relied on the computer not being you to function. If an Elder Scrolls MMO came out, it also wouldnt be in a single region. Because then itd also feel like a huge letdown to those who have enjoyed the formula since Daggerfall. This also includes your role: the unnamed hero, unmentioned by history, but whos deeds rippled through time and space more so than any others at a crucial period. That would have to go away as well.
Now, im not expressly OPPOSED to this sort of game, just that it should A) not be a numberd title, and B) contain more than one zone. Best examples would be the provincial conflicts after Martin ascended: A scaled down, less well invovled storyline in a confusing and hectic situation that crosses all states, less detailed than in a single player.
The other could be basically the same thing, but taking place wholly in Akavir. ITd be really tought to go against established lore in that place, because its still not entirely clear who the akaviri ghosts in Oblivion were...
But for now, we know how much the devs listen to us, and while we dont always enjoy their solutions, they do find solutions for what we most want. And they know that what we dont want is ES5 to be an MMO. Im not sure how an optional co-op mode would work, but if they can seamlessly give the same level of challenge for two players that it is for one palyer, i wouldnt mind.
Another good sign is how theres no beta. Its hard to not annouce MMO plans, for exactly that reason. For other such games, they have beta playing for months after months, and still wind up with a huge number of bugs. Imagine that, but without any beta testers, and competing against a newly expanded WoW. Itd be financial suicide. Conversely, if the game keeps its long loved format, it remains at the top of single-player games, a rarity in these days. Thats a position I believe theyd like to retain, rather than take a risk with a game type that a lot of bethesda's long time fans dislike.
