A (The?) Fallout Drabble Thread

A fist strikes the console with a clang.

“Something’s wrong with the controls. Can’t seal it from here.”

The soft murmuring of the crowd picks up pitch. From the center a man steps forward, features pinched in consternation. “That door can’t be open when-“

“I’m aware of that, Overseer.”

The mechanic wipes grime-flecked sweat from his brow. “…Someone is going to have to close it from the outside. That panel’s still responding.”

The Overseer makes a quick survey of the group. “But when the bombs-“

“They’ll be left outside.” His throat clears uncomfortably. “To fry.”

“So… anyone got any straws?”

As the title says, this is a thread for prompting and posting Fallout-themed Drabbles!

It seems I don't have the ability to post links in this forum, or I would refer you to Wikipedia's article on what a Drabble is. However, if you're not inclined to look, here's the short version - it's a 100 word (sometimes less, hopefully never more) story.

It's a writing exercise of sorts, to try to get people in the frame of mind of brevity in writing - what in your narrative is truly essential, how quickly can you convey an idea, etc. The one above is a sample I just did, but the format can be whatever you want (a single paragraph, a poem, etc). Just keep the 100 words as your only constraint (aside from any other rules of the Forum, of course).

Here's how this thread works:

First, I'm going to post a prompt.
Then, the first person to come up with a drabble based on that prompt posts that drabble.
Finally, the person who responded to the prompt provides their own prompt. Prompts can be words, sentences, images, etc.
If we're lucky, someone will respond to that prompt.

And repeat the process.

Drabbles do not have to be written for your RP characters - they can be alts, fanfiction for canon characters, etc. And you are welcome to reply to a previous prompt after it has been replied to, but do not replace the current drabble prompt.

With nothing else to say, the first prompt is "Wasteland"
