So the Fallout MMO that Interplay announced

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 6:27 pm

well even if EA DID take fallout mmo, theres a better chance it would be made. So it's either:
1. A not so high chance that a fallout mmo will be released anytime soon with no guarantees whether it will or will not svck
or
2. A higher chance that a fallout mmo will be released and will svck horribly.

It's a win win for everyone!

Heh, I guess. At the cost of any chance of being good.

I'd like to point out that Interplay's contract with Bethesda stipulates that the MMO must be finished within 4 years or they forfeit rights to use Fallout in an MMO. So if it happens, it happens within that time frame.

"Specific requirements were stated in the agreement that if not met, Interplay would immediately lose and forfeit its license rights for Fallout. Development must begin within 24 months of the date of the agreement (April 4, 2007), and Interplay must secure $30 million within that time frame or forfeit its rights to license. Interplay must furthermore launch the MMOG within 4 years of the beginning of development, and pay Bethesda 12 percent of sales and subscription fees for the use of the IP."

Actually, almost every RPG is consisting of "Kill x" "Get y" quests. Blaming MMORPGs for that is just... Head -> Table.

I have 1,700+ in Guild Wars but that is something somewhat different. Since I spent the majority of time PvP'ing. (which never required kill X of this or any of those stupid time sinks)
For sure. PvP. Let's see...

PvE:
Day 1: "I am in a forest and kill boars"
Day 2: "I am in a volcanic area and kill demons"
Day 3: "I am in a desert and kill giants"

PvP:
Day 1: "I am in an arena and kill players"
Day 2: "I am in an arena and kill players... again"
Day 3: "I am in an arena and kill players... over and over and over"
Day 4, 5, 6, 7: ...

Yeah, PvP isnt grind, it's an eventful funny game experience!

I actually enjoyed Warcraft a great deal pre BC. The expansion really killed it for me. I would so play again if they released a server with classic AV so I could have my 19 hour matches.
I'm glad the developers dont have to focus anymore on people having fun in doing the same thing 19 hours at a stretch.

I play MMO's for the community. The entire reason I stopped playing wow is because primarily its player base is a bunch of loud racists.

When Obama won I 'literally' saw hours of people discussing banding together and murdering him and his family. I canceled my subscription :P.

It was quite fun, I actually skipped school to finish one of them :P

Skrimishes in the field of strife, having a team devoted to getting the wolf riders or commandos out for a push deep into the enemy territory, getting the elemental lords out or burning towers and rescuing wing commanders. Not to mention the glorious "last stands" on the Alliance bridge that could go on for what seemed like an eternity.

The long AVs gave you this feeling that a truly epic battle was being fought and it put the war in warcraft.

Sadly after the changes they turned it into a pve race and people just want to finish it as quick as possible win or lose so they can get the welfare epics.

I miss the old days :(

Did you try a RP server? Those guys were a little to fruity for me but from the time I spent on there due to discussion of the Battlegroup my server was in it seemed some of them had a very strong community.

Or you could just go to Lord Of The Rings Online, that game is a lore/rp nerd heaven :P

I play WoW, and I'm surprised you guys are overlooking other annoying aspects:

Ganking
Stupidity in the chat channels
People yelling "selling super stimpacks, 50 caps each!" etc. over and over
People begging for caps/weapons/power armor at level one
Chuck Norris jokes (wait, I like those, I'm easily amused)

Some of us enjoyed world pvp as the "ganking" at times led to pretty fun fights when the persons friends got there. All the same there are non pvp servers for a reason.

Chat channels can be turned off.

Trade Channels can be turned off when you are not using them.

Something that is an issue in all online games and you can honestly just ignore them, black list them or do like I do and make them do stupid [censored] for a few gold pieces :P

I never leveled in the Barrens, I always did Undead and after the expansion went Belf. Still turning off the chat channel applies with the jokes.

Oh DOH!!!! Yea, you're right.

But doesn't EA own Interplay now anyway? They own everything else

Wow, the whole thread got moved....Freddo must be modding the boards...he's quick :)

No, EA don't own them, and what is your grudge against them anyway? They make quality games once in a while, and no one forces you to buy them, so take a hike hater. Thanks.

I wanted to try MOM, and took a WoW character to level 25 before I realized my job actually was less repetetive and more fun... not to mention I get paid in real $$$...

How is standing in line waiting for the 15 lions you need to kill to respawn fun?

this conversation seems to be geared toward a "do you love or hate MMOs?" rant thread, which confuses me.

cRPGs have overused "grind" gameplay almost as much as NES-era platformers did. cRPGs happened to pass it on to MMOs because the whole experience point, leveling metaphor was the easiest way for developers to create a sense of accomplishment and progression in a gaming genre that is, by nature, very open ended and difficult to track progression in. i cant be the only one here who lost count of how many annoying quests i had to do in baldur's gate 2 just to open the next area, etc. that was grind gameplay to me.

in all honesty, i'm anxious for bethesda to step into the MMO arena. the very things that have been their weaknesses in single player RPGs would become their strengths in an MMO. bethesda makes huge, detailed worlds full of very open, sandbox gameplay, giving the player the ability to explore an endless variety of small quests with poignant and human subtexts and storylines buried inside them. however bethesda has always had a problem with their world's feeling somewhat empty, stiff, lifeless and lacking in the sort of relationships we've come to expect from black isle or bioware games. (whose worlds feel cramped, small and linear in comparison...)

one other aspect of MMOs could be bethesda's answer to these lingering complaints: community building.

in morrowind, oblivion and fallout 3 one of the most common complaints i hear is that it never really feels like the player is making very much of an impact on the game world. if bethesda made an MMO as sandboxed as their single player games have always been, you could band together with 30 or 40 raiders and besiege megaton, or tenpenny tower. you could take over a subway station and build a town there. you could make a fortune building caravans, or protecting them on their travels, or robbing them.

the last piece, that last bit of "oomph" that bethesda's single player games have lacked could be found in an MMO. the worlds they have spent so many years and hours painstakingly crafting could finally come alive.

so instead of just grumbling about "grind", think of the rest of the possibilities. quest grinding doesn't have to be a permanent design feature of MMOs anymore than full motion video had to be a part of point-and-click adventure games. all it takes is a little creativity and a game design engrossing enough to get MMO players over their (current?) fear of sandbox gameplay and i think a lot of you grumblers would be surprised at the result.

Group with the people doing the killing or go do another quest? Hell maybe even go run an instance. It is not like the level 25 areas have such horrid repawn times or are camped on a regular basis.

40 man raids were fun, I miss the days of the law bringer shoulders dropping in MC and forcing who ever won the roll to sing Banana Phone over vent or they didint get to loot them.

I laughed out loud when I saw "So the Fallout MMO that EA Announced" emphasis on EA, and now that everyone is replying to it thinking it IS being made me EA I have to laugh even more. Thank you :)

And I don't think its a sequel, I think they want to port Jim to current consoles. He kicks ass and I would probably buy it if they did :)

It's going to be like any other MMO.

"Hey Traveler, I've been making stimpaks, and I need are 7 Mole-rats Butts and 5 Radscorpion eyes, say if you bring me back
20 Mole-rat butts and 15 Radscorpion eyes I'll give you 5 stimpaks"

Do this every level but change the Mobs you have to kill

At level 14

"Hey Traveler, I've been making Ultra Jet, and I need are 12 Deathclaws Hands and 17 Feral Ghoul Eyes, say if you bring me back
20 Deathclaw Hands and 15 Feral Ghoul Eyes I'll give you 5 Ultra Jets"

How do people keep falling for this shallow crap and keep playing games like that?

MMOs truly are the main thing I love the pc for. Just can't beat thousands of players pushing the limits of a game.

Not so much those things bother me (well, the ganking does at times, but oh well) just mentioning those as aspects of MMO's no one mentioned.

Also, my ganking expereinces are due to me as a clueless newb not being more discriminating in my initial choice of server, and i'll be getting a server transfer when funds permit.

Mr. Obvious: Because a lot of RPG players have friends and want to play games with them online.

Ganking: don't play pvp servers/zones. Chat: turn off the channels. Or just play LotRO, which actually has a focus on a storyline and PvE. Problems solved. Technically grinding is optional.

Constantly rereleasing the same (sports) game year after year and Sims 2: New Hat Expansion - Then having the audacity to decry the lack of innovation in the industry.

Killing of very good, well respected dev houses (Origin, Bullfrog, Westwood) after purchase.

Not to mention DRM.

I dont accept either of those as an excuse for ganking. Maybe I want to play PvP with people at my own level. Maybe none of my friends have had enough time to waste grinding to max level ( you know , with that real world game going on outside).

Well sorry that is the way pvp servers roll (or used to, I think a friend told me blizzard pussied out and lets normal>pvp servers now?). Regardless No one was/is ever making you play on a pvp server. Could always play normal or rp and just go in Battlegrounds for your kicks.

If its red its dead :celebration:

and yes I was the [censored] camping spawns and bodies in South Shore for the full 30 min before they can report it griefing. Honestly once you have all the pvp gear, done your arenas for the week and only upgrades can be found in raids you have to find ways to keep yourself occupied.

Whining about ganking is the single most foolish complaint ever. Historically, these complainers are newbs and people that have no understanding of "pve realm" vs. "pvp realm". These people are so bad at playing an online game that they almost always resort to blind-rage whining when ganked. They go into a game knowing the rules and regulations of pvp in some cases, and constantly whine and complain how they should be changed because they dont like what happened to them.

1. ultima online was a pvp world- whiners changed it and now it is 2 worlds. A world for pvssycats and a world for everyone who wants to kill players whenever they want.

2. World of warcraft had realms for pve and pvp and for the pvssycats that wanted to pvp on their own time and place and ruleset- Arena was offered.

3. Age of Conan specifically said "pvp oriented game" and yet still made pve realms for the pvssycats.

After all this is done- people still whine and cry about ganking. How much of a pus can a human being get?

I just hope that permadeath is included. I would love to see a PvP game based on Fallout that had perma death. You would really have to be careful wtf you do or you would have to start all over.

Allowing players to create a character in any way they want to would be cool to. Such as... I want to play an Intelligent mutated Rat, like that "Brain" in Gecko. Or a pure Tribal, or a hermit or whatever. Just allow people to choose and create their starting point in the fallout universe and try to survive as long as you can.

thats a really good idea man(both), you should visit the interplay website and post some of your thoughts their. The fallout deisgner reads alot of forum content and responds frequently.
Perma death was the most fun i ever had when i played hardcoe mode for diablo 2 online. One death and it was over but you got to keep a ghost of your character lol.
